Yeah the lighting is mediocre at best. thats why they are the B shots. I sent the A stuff to decline, I'm not holding my breath though. Although I got some really good shots both Harookz and Hylands were there.

Actually the shots at the SRAM Jump comp are on a monopod.
You still shooting really dark emo black and white or have you grown out of puberty yet?

Thanks for putting up some pics of actual bicycle riding!
Lots of hate getting thrown down here. They may not be "A" shots, but they're 10x better than looking at some more NBR or half built bike shots.
I'm sort of digging the perspective of the clouds in the first one. I think it would look awesome framed looser with the rider's shadow laid out in the foreground. Just a thought...

Yup, infact, I've got 30 rolls of film in my backpack waiting to be turned into "really dark emo black and white". That doesn't make your photos any better.

I stand corrected. After all, unless you're submitting shots to the next Decline, whats the point of focusing?
wasn't it you who those dinosaur extinction pictures?:S
Those photos were far from anything serious, if thats what you're implying. I figured a thread title of "Digitally captured lifestyle shots" and the content consiting of a kid in a stenciled up cardboard box talking about dinosaur extinction, wouldn't be taken seriously. Alas, yet again I'm proven wrong.

This was a skatepark at a school that andy and Phil took us to. There were 2 hippy skaters there that left after 7 of us started riding. We had a great sesh that day, with no hassles.
but no, you cannot ride bikes in the skate park.
Covert photo mission.

I will make this clear the pictures are very good simple as that. Whoever said they are not is either clearly jealous or enjoys causing an argument, they are not the best ive ever seen but are good all the same.

well what if someone just doesn't like them? It's not as simple as the pictures being very good. Everyone has their own opinion, not everyone has to agree with you.
Nice pictures btw.

jonathan: it's through arguments that a lot of us learn.
jaysinclair: pictures aren't good, but they're definately getting better. flash exposures are far better. you just have to get your focus right on more occassions and zoom out more. maybe get more creative with the composition and angles. they are very standard long-lens-infront-of-jump shots. not that decline will care about that.

The ones I am seding decline are not standard in front of jumps long lens shots. They are sharp and have good composition. Otherwise I wouldn't send em.
Yeah these shots are whatever. I thought I would throw something up instead of nothing so people could see something.
The zoomout thing is interesting. I do shoot wide on a lot of occasions and am starting to shoot wide more so, but when I look at mag covers most are pushed in so you can see rider face, not composition of shot.
thoughts?

you are right. covers tend to be zoomed in. but the question isn't only about how zoomed in you are, it's also about what you are placing in the shot. what kind of vibe do you want to get across with it? long lenses are good for compressing a scene and giving you a way to select what you want in the shot, essentially cropping in real life. the shots you have are plain shots, there's nothing ttoooo wrong with them, they're just rather.. boring and standard. iscream was a huge media frenzy, maybe you can zoom out more and include more cameras in the shot, giving the editor more to write about. walk 360 degs round the area to find a more interesting angle with better elements in the shot, maybe find an angle where you can see all the jumps. that kinda thing. the environment and atmosphere is just as important as the rider/trick.
for the curious, this is a good site to check up on covers for bmx mags. i haven't found something similar for mtb mags yet.

A lot of you guys talk a lot of shit although I'm pretty sure none of you are published regularly and pretty much all of your portfolios are nothing special from what I've seen on your websites. Some of you don't even have the basic techniques down but you seem to give harder critiques than any of my professers ever did.
Cool shots, and props on having the guts to post on here. If I were you I wouldn't even bother with the comments that are thrown around.
To the guy who shoots 30 rolls of b&w and is really hating on this Jay sinclair fellow, heres an honest comment that may get through to your high perch: Your black and white is terrible. Take a basic college darkroom course and learn how to make a fine print before you rag on anyone else.

Thats a cool collection of the mags covers. Looks like they tend to use nicer images than most bike mags. I'll have to keep checking back to see the new shots.
I find most though push in a lot, not as artsy, but shows the face of the athlete. i guess it depends on what shcool of editor you are. Old school editors will want faces, new school will want artsy shots.
here is another B-Shot but wider for you.

Jay: that shot's better than the standard ones. you get a sense of height and the feeling of being there cuz it was taken from ground level and looking up. that and you showed both the jump and landing (altho' it'd be cool to see the lip). that wall on the right is distracting tho, but nonetheless, the shot's more dynamic than the rest.

I have the same angles but better shots. In that dumped 360 for instance it is a bit soft in focus and you can't see his face. Although I can process that shot in Photoshop to get it sharper, I had a better one in my arsenal.
Thanks for the ups though, always appreciated.
