View Full Version : Fundraiser Idea.. yay/nay??

Riding pangor this morning gave me a great idea for a local fundraiser for either tools, bikes, whatever.

I dont know about you all, but I love seeing riding pictures of myself. I have very few. My fundraiser Idea is pretty much free as long as volenteers already have the eqiupment (which Im sure they do).

Take a trail like pangor. Shuttleable, easy to get to, and cool looking lines for everyone. Not to mention the lack of traffic compared to CBC and Neds. Have riders sign up at the top of the mountain for a photo session. Give them a number plate and send them down. Try and get some volenteers with d50s and whatever placed on the skinnies, rockfaces, and other cool features. Digital film is free everyone!! And the internet is the best way to send the photos out.

Take down the riders names as well as their number plate and organize the photos accordingly and post them up on nsmb. Each rider should get 5-10 good shots of themselves. And in order to participate they could pay a small fee (fundraiser part). Barby and Door prices at the end and its a party.

What you guys/girls think? I think its doable. Just need a cause and Im sure there is no lack of those.

I think thats a cool idea, something that the nsmba could probably do, maybe even just raising money for themselves, for trail maintenance. I don't know what kind of issues there would be regarding trail access and what not.

Great idea.

Haha, like rat says, execution is key. Im in no position to organize an event. I was just throwing out a good idea to the gods. Maybe see it happen in the future maybe not. I would love a big group like nsmb or nsmba to make it happen and happen good.

Thats weak.

I rank that up there with " someone should build a wicked gap over here"

I can tell you 10 different Ideas to fundraise for the NSMBA and Im sure sharon has heard 100.

Problem is it takes someone to commit alot of time and effort to make it happen.

I think it's a fantastic idea. I can't think of one person that wouldn't like to have a pro quality photo of themselves ripping it on the Shore. Judging by the quality of photos sent in to the Money Shot comp there is obviously some talent behind the lens out there and if a few of those people would volunteer for the NSMBA some good money could be made. How cool would it be to have a wicked photo of yourself that in the bottom corner said Rider: You Photo: S Lorence

haha. thanks rat.
i agree "make it happen" is such a classic and sad statement. the little gnomes at nsmba are all busy right now.

if someone does want to do this the easiest way would be at the rippers. for some of the guys wanting to get more known/make money with their bike photography... donating half to the nsmba would still probably get yourself a nice chunk of money and huge exposure. :)

I guess you haven't met me then. I ride my bike to get away from it all. Most everyone I know rides for the ride, not for a "look at me" opportunity.

Everybody is pretty quick to suggest guys with cameras to volunteer their time, people to come up with a bbq, and setup the whole thing, but I haven't seen one person offer to do it. You want Sterling Lorence to donate his time, but you don't want to donate yours? Who do you think has more spare time here?

Like Rat says, there's no shortage of ideas, it's people willing to do the work are sparse.

The NSMBA organizers should have t-shirts with the name "someone" on the back.

I'll be glad to come out for an afternoon and snap of some pics. Just as long as LeeLau rubs my feet at the end of the day.

I think it's safe to say that we ALL ride for the ride Davet, why else would we spend thousands on a bicycle and related products. Have you ever looked at a bike magazine before? Cool photos aren't they? Wouldn't it be kind of neat to have a great photo of yourself doing the thing you love and help raise money to protect the sport at the same time?
As for the organization of such an event, if the NSMBA feels this would be a good opportunity to raise funds then I'm sure they could organize this type of thing. That's what stewardship groups do. Dantes Inferno was simply voicing an idea he had and IMO it's a great idea.
I also think that it wouldn't be out of the question to ask that people such as Sterling Lorence donate a few hours to the sport considering that he and his peers have made a living taking pictures of trails built by people that donated a hell of alot more time than a few hours. If he's too busy, no problem, I understand.
When it comes to spare time, I don't know what Mr. Lorences schedule is but it is very possible that he DOES have more spare time than me. You also state that I am not willing to donate MY time; read my post again and you will see that there is no mention from me regarding my willingness about donating time. You only assumed that for some reason and remember what happens when you assume something. The only difference here is that that you only made an ass out of yourself IMHO.

Cheers.

No I don't give a damn about someone taking a picture of me. I wouldn't pay to have one taken. If it costs $20 for the picture, I'd rather give the $20 directly to the NSMBA so they receive 100% of it.

You ended your post with "Make it happen NSMBA" I didn't see anywhere that you were offering to help. A fair assumption in my mind.

Dante asked for opinions. Some think it's a good idea, I don't. I'm entitled to my opinion just as you are yours.

While I'm sure the NSMBA needs funding, I'll bet what they need more of is people to work on trails on a regular basis.

I don't think you get it. The NSMBA is a bunch of people, just like you, who happen to ride. Between working their full-time jobs, family, friends, children, pets and other interests, some of them lobby, advocate, raise money and organize events for their hobby, mountain biking. Some of them even find time to build and maintain trails. There are no magic fairies doing all the work. Lots of people have good ideas - virtually nobody wants do the work to put it into practise. The point Rat and others are making is: If you have a good idea, take ownership of it. PM Sharon and tell her when and where you are volunteering to put your plan into effect or just mail NSMBA the cheque of the proceeds. D.

No fairies!?! Man am I stupid.

You said it yourself, the NSMBA is a bunch of people who give their valuble time to organize events for mountain biking. This is just an idea that they (the NSMBA) may think is worthwhile. Are you saying that if I (or in this case Dante) have a good idea but don't have the resources to make it happen ie. contacts, skill, knowledge etc. I should just keep it to myself? People come out to trail days because they don't have the ability to do it themselves and are happy to help out their sport via the NSMBA and show support. I think its a great idea and could generate much needed funds as well as be a good time for everyone. Want me to take E-mail addresses and other info or be a gopher for the photographers? Sign me up! It would be fun.

I hate it how someone lightheartedly expressed a thought and was jumped on for not doing it himself 5 seconds after he hit the "post" button.

There are many of us who are guilty of not doing more to help out, inlcuding me, and I agree with the old saying of "put up or shut up" but I'll never shun someone for voicing his thoughts in a light and friendly manner.

Not everyone relizes that I dont need the funds, or I would do this myself. Ill help the community by volenteering for trail maintnence and voicing my concerns. I do not have the know how to organize an event like this, so Im voicing for the people who do and maybe interested.

Great idea......

pretty much every race I've ever been in when I was racing cross-country had several photographers present taking photos at opportune and highly photogenic spots on the course. By the time the race was done, proofs were ready for the racers to check out and buy. I have a photo of pretty much every race as a result. They are great momentos and because of critical site selection and some skill on the part of the photographer I generally looked pretty good in the pics.

Given that most of the time I am riding by myself, I don't have nearly as many photos of my outings that I would like. I would definitely buy.

Make is so Number 1!!!!!
