actually unions are just bad news, then we'll all end up strike'n and then what! no dice
I actually get great pay, work with great people and have fun working at my bike shop job.
I would not join your union. And I would encourage others to do likewise, because if your job sucks, why are you still there?

while i agree with the others i wouldnt mind union benefits
I'm just joking around. Although compared to other skilled trades its not on par.

What skilled trade would you compare a bike mechanic to?
A city worker digging ditches? I dont know, I'm just joking around no reason to get up in flames.
what would it cost to get my wheel trued when I have 1 guy doing it and 2 guys standing around talking about it for a couple hours. of course they would all be making 22 bucks an hour.
And youd never have gotten your job in the first place becuase the postion is filled by some crusty old fuck who should have moved on 20 years ago and is supporting his 3 kids and ex- wife on the salary

I heard someone got fired from a certain North Shore bike shop for attempting to start a union.
Really, Well we will have to bring that up at our next meeting.

When all bike shop owners are rolling around in Hummers, smoking fat cigars, living high in West Van with accounts in the Caymans, then - and only then - will we need Bike Shop BS union.
Mike Thiel aside, i dont think any of the Vancouver shop owners are even close to that image.
Like i told someone who asked me this last night - if you dont like your job, find one that you do, and Pi$$ Off.

I'm with you man. Next thing you know these lazy fucks are gonna want days off and benefits. We all know that the majority of union members are unskilled high school drop outs who don't actually do any real work and get paid ridiculously high wages. There is no need for unions they just protect lazy people. I say bring back the days of the 7 day work week with no benefits. My Great Grandfather and Grandfather did it so we should all man up and do it too!

Bingo... bike shop employees AND owners are NOT doing it for the money. for 90% of us it's a way of life. almost all shops are basically not-for-profit when it comes down to it all... excluding shops that have their own bike line (*cough*cove*cough*) there's not need for a union... and if there was i know alot of people, me included, who would be out of the industry in a heartbeat because of it.
aside from the 'maybe' seriousness of this thread, it would be pretty sweet if we all did get together with a kegger and some prizes for a few gatherings. although there is alot of love in the canadian bike industry, random gatherings would be a sweet addition.

I'd have a much nicer set of wheels too if I'd been on the ball a couple years ago. Missed the damn boat, friggin' prices are too high now for this guy.:(

I hear ya....Im gonna be hooped for buying a place.....rent is even getting rediculous! We're still going to buy a new house here in the next while. Once I shingle my roof and I get the place cleaned up, it's going up for sale. The good part is that the house we have now is worth about fifty grand more than it was last year, bad part is the new one is going to eat that up and then a whole chunk more. It's gotta be done though, I need more room for my bikes and a garage for my toys. :)

Hey J,
Being a relative noob to the PG bikeshop scene, who do you (or other PG-ians here) recommend as a decent LBS to deal with?

The guys at Cycle logic are pretty nice guys...decent pricing as well....
IMO stay away from Koops and Summerland....not so great service, and not so great prices.
