Anywho, so yesterday building up on powers creek here in the okanagan (working on a new step up to berm idea). Dave (Dirty Dave the Diddler-whom is known for his work on powers) get a great idea to cut a shudder-live tree down and super close to the frame work of the new step up to berm. So I'm in the frame work nailing supports on and such and I hear the chain saw trun off a very distinctive crack of a falling tree and at the same time dave screaming at me to get th-outta way! I leap outta the structure thinking thats where it was going to land and realize I jumped INTO the path of the falling tree, sprinting full out and not able to leap to the side I'm basicly hoping to out run a falling 60 footer, last second I was able to jump outta the path and right where my last step was instantly the tree smacks down.
Just rambling but I thought it was pretty freeky.
Why the f@ck would he cut down a live tree, how freaking stupid can you get.

dave's a fucking idiot for not clearing the area and letting people know when the tree was coming down. you also should have been paying attention to the saw.

haha i take it you share a similar experiance?
Just because they where going to harvest that area doesn't mean its right to do it. Whoever has a license for that area has the rights to that wood, you put your trail in jeapardy by doing that. If they come through and see that you cut down there trees which equals money to them i dont think they will pleased. Plus whoever was cutting down the tree doesn't sound like the sharpest tool in the shed i.e. almost killing you.

You should always be twice the height of the tree away from the faller. Trees are under all kinds of tension and sometimes they don't fall the direction you thin they will.

^^^ ha, try telling that to my dad. as kids my bro and I were the pullers in the logging operation whe we were falling trees around the yard. you know the drill, tie a rope or chain to the tree, pull as hard as you can as it fall towards you to make sure it's going in the right direction, then run like hell.
I almost got clipped by a few trees the winter I did Fall and Burn. plus as a bucker I had to buck more then my share of fallen tree that were tangled in amugst the standing timber. hmmmm I wonder which way this sucker is going to go if I cut it here...

I leaned up against a rotten old tree (3" dia) on Bowen and gave it a slight shake. The top 3 feet came down on my head before the wife could yell jump! Thank god for bike helmets.

Ya I am the idiot. The tree wasn't that big and for the record it was pine beetle kill. They are selective logging in the area because of the pine beatle. I obviosly should have checked the area before droping it but when your rushing mistakes happen. So my bad. But Gimpy forgave me.

i dont care that your falling live trees, we do it here all the time. its the recklessness of falling a tree near your buddy that worries me.

oh come on now man, 60ft is my minimum for taking down trees. you should see some of the 100ft plus babies i've taken down. the best part is watching yer trail crew scramble like a bunch of cockroaches caught in the light when they realize that sucker is comin down on top of them.
PS
for the unitiated, please read this post with a heavy dose of SARCASM - it's my style.

The tree was not 60ft. I know because I got less than 30ft of beaming out of it. It was only 8 inch across at the base. If you read Gimpys post you will see that he was far less upset than alot of you are getting. And yes he still builds with me and yes I am more carefull now and no I am not clear cutting the area. The only live trees I have ever used are fresh blow down. In fact I have to clear alot of it from the trail this year as we had alot of snow. But if you need something to do bash away. Otherwise I am done with this post.

Uhhh...yeah. Don't want to cut the trees down, since we obviously value them so much. Check the attachment.....

if my calculations are correct the constant velocity of every falling tree is: 21 m/s²
