Was at Chapters today and looked through a recent issue of What Mountain bike mag. The Brit one.

They did a write up on the trails, not just the mountain. They mentioned Cut Yer Bars and A River Runs Thought It.

Was part of a spread they did calling the new version of XC with ramps and such Extreme XC, Hardcore XC.....

Only in BC would either of those trails be considered XC. The rest of the world would refer to those trails as freeriding. Actually, probably hardcore freeriding.

haha the first time i rode a river runs through it, it took us like 3 hours -.- no water 40+ degrees and an idiot guy who decided to walk half the time and wanted me to film every stunt like 20 times (even though its one of the easiest trails i'lv ridden lol) ... i dislike that trail very much

Cut yer bars is one of my fav's (also near my house) so many sub-trials and mini loops and fun little spots to play. Its a good trail to practice stuff on. Depending on which routes you take it would be xc but it can be OHHH so much more.

We spent a week or so with the guys from the UK mag trying to get them into as many places as we could. Granted we ended up taking them up with the West Coast Freeride Guides on a heli drop, down to the North Shore, did a peak descent and still found time to ride them hard around the local trails.

It was a great week, and I was pleased to see the positive result of the feature.

When I first contacted the editor regarding the idea, he was talking about doing this Extreme XC thing.. I had to push him as to wjat he was expecting from the new fangled term.. and thought i'd better let him know that the locals would simply call that XC!

If you are interested, you can check out the article on our web site.

We had a great time with the mag guys and hope that it goes someway towards promoting the awesome trails that we have up in Whistler outside of the much hyped bike park!

Enjoy

It is definately different than just about anywhere else. I moved to BC from the east coast of canada, and had quite a shock as to how technical the trails were, but got used to them fairly quickly. That was before "freeriding" really started, so now tech trails are showing up all over the place, although they just aren't quite the same.

Yes and....well no. I know a lot of guys from the east coast that came out here to ride and were shocked by what I called xc. Most were commenting on how good the freeriding was, when in fact it isn't. Just steep, loose and techy. I am not a freerider imo. But these guys were blown away. I believe it is a flatland vs mountain thing. anyone who has actually ridden down or around a good sized mountain wouldn't be completely shocked.

A couple of them with more worldly experience were impressed but they still just call it xc. They had a bit more experience in the mountains then the poor fellows from Ontario and newfieland.

And thats only in Whistler haha I didn't even take them to pemberton or the shore.

I do have to say though, this new trend to pave trails by re-enforcing them with coblestone sucks. Its turning some nice techy trails into walkways. Several of my favorite trails are now technically easy...

I rode the second half of River today, from the Rainbow parking lot. It was still under a lot of snow!

*note: the sign said Open, before anyone starts blazing about riding closed trails!

I really liked that article - that was a fun read. I used to do Cut Yer Bars and the Suicycle and Hand of Doom variations (the rockfaces in the article) on my pinner hardtail with U-brakes and 2.0 tires) so it was fun to read about all the old vs new gear comments.

Did Chris Markle really use the words "Extreme XC"? I'll give chris grief about that.

Another British mag did an article on Whistler (the bikepark and trails) and ripped off a bunch of pictures of mine.

You used to be a lawyer, right? So you know how to make sure you get paid for those pics?

Also...the rock faces in there are tough! Props for doing it on old-school gear!
