View Full Version : SRAM deraileur issue?

I just made the switch from a XT deraileur to a X-7. Unfortunately the X-7 does not come with a short cage but that is another topic.
As I was installing it I realized that the cable routing on the Shimano had the cable loop in behind the deraileur and reletively safe from snagging on a root or stick. The X-7 has the cable connect on the side and would seem to be more prone to hang up on something.
Does anyone have any experience with this?

the sram has less cable, less drag, and less chance of getting caught on stuff ... my experience is there is no downside to SRAM ... shimano is the one with the downsides.
the cable loop on shimanos always eventually gets contaminated or the housing gets pinched and either way your shifting goes to shit.
not to mention how shimanos like to whack on chainstays ...

^^^... and how the cable tension adjustment bolt is prone to breaking on Shimano derailleurs
still I use shimanos just cuz they're so plentiful and cheap. I'm gonna try a Saint rd with my SRAM attack shifter

A quick plug for the Saint, I slipped off a 4" skinny and landed, full body weight, directly on my Saint rear der. It was [I]slightly[I] bent (an XT would have been rendered unrecognizable let alone usable after something like this), I just tweaked it back and six months later it's taken more abuse than I want to admit and kept on shifting perfectly.
And so I don't completely hijack this thread, I always had problems with the way the XT's cable was routed off of the back.... I think I broke about a billion cable adjuster bolts off the back of mine before I switched to the Saint. I've never ridden SRAM, but given my riding style (and by style I mean stomp the hell out of everything) anything would be better than that XT set up.

If you don't like the 8" cable loop on Shimano derailleurs just get an Avid Rollamajig or one of those Cog Hogs. It essentially eliminates the giant branch snagging loop, and makes your shifting slicker to boot.

Done the same thing with my X9, still works good.

um, it doesnt really eliminate the loop at all. It just eliminates friction and makes for smoother shifting.
See? Loop is still there:

Just get SRAM
Been happy with my X-0 X9 combo for about a year now. Hated my old XT set up. Needed constant tuning, and it was LOUD.

No loop on my lo normal(reverse) XTR short cage der. Oh yeah no problems in 4 years of riding with it. Still shifts smooth as butter.

if an alien culture were to lurk on this BB, they would think it is a ritual that follows the cycle of the moon where we all wait for one person to make a contentious statement about sram or shimano then we all jump on and say that one or the other sucks bag and that our own experience with the other or the one has been perfect to date.
