One of the first things I notice when pulling up a biking hotspot is the different and innovative bike carrying setups in the parking lot. I'm always thinking up the ultimate bike-mobile as far as carrying bikes and passengers. I know this topic was touched on in an article long ago, but I thought it would be cool for those of you out there to showcase your setups.
here is a picture of my current set-up. It holds 5 bikes perfectly standing up,( eventhough the pic only shows 3) but I can only cram 3 (4 if they are short) riders.

I like the second truck myself.
I don't have any pictures, but here is what I am running, it fits 4 comfortably with their bikes/gear, plus it is cheap on gas.
Ford Focus Wagon
Yakima Lowrider Roof System
4 Yakima King Cobra Racks

Ghetto rack, but works well.
If I'm not bouncing along a gravel road, 4 bikes and no strapping required. With straps, five easily (one across the top behind the window). But, here's six and I could have fit the seventh on the otherside.
Whole rack removes from the truck in about 15 seconds, when I need the bed free.

Just tie everything to the car.

A buddy of mine made a thing (yes, thats the technical term) that replaces his tailgate. Its basically a padded bar with some other minor features. Tailgating the bikes doesn't change but it helps with fuel economy on the highway.
trucks are cool and I drive one too but IMO they don't really much advantage over a car with a good rack like Tonestar's, especially on the Shore where we have the luxury of paved roads to the top of the hills. I'd love to have something like an Audi A3 with a huge kickass DH bike rack on the back. And huge rims of course

I was going to say that SG's was pretty ghetto, but then I saw James', that's just scary, if I ever see you on the road I will give you a wide berth.
My question with both of those, is where do you put all the people you are shuttling, the bikes don't match the passenger space?

My biggest load was 5 bikes, 2 adults, 3 kids and two full size dogs. Definately uncomfortable and dangerous, so that's only for VERY short hops.
I only carry more bikes than people when other vehicles can carry the riders. For example - when I ride with the Walnut Grove High School bike club, usually I'll carry 5 or 6 bikes and the kids will fit into one of the parent's vans.
And.. Ghetto? Yup. but, cost = zero and functionality = 100%.

The 323 does have matching bike and passenger space. Three bikes on the back, one on top with some of the camping gear, four guys inside with the rest of the camping gear (2 tents, four big backpacks, sleeping bags, cooler full of beer, etc). It's perfect and great on gas.
9 - 10 Bikes and Riders

As in the tailgate's not there so the air flows through??? See I've heard this before, but Mythbusters did a comparisson and it actualy HURTS your milage... the Tailgate creates a pocket of air that acts like a Canopy would and allows the air to flow over the truck instead of buffeting behind the cab and creating a vacum that slows down the truck/creates more drag...
Nice Trucks, I like the "ghetto rack" look properly hand made and effective. All these shuttle trucks have me jealous.
I can fit 3 bikes max in the back of the 89 Runner (when the back window's working ;) ) I don't have to strap anything down, just hook'm over the tailgate and roll the window up a bit. PLus then I can carry four people... I'm thinking with the top off this summer, I'll get a bit creative adn start piling them on. Course that's the nice thing about that Ford, you don't have to worry about weight with a big motor, my 4cyl 22RE on the other hand

my parents have a truck (1997 chevy silverado 2500?) and a suv
(2003(i think) gmc jimmy 4door..4wd).
the most we've ever had in the truck was 2 dirtbikes(xr80 and 100) and 3 bikes and its got room for 5 inside...
we have a 4-bike rack(thule bighorn4) and we had 3 bikes on it once, but usually only mine, or if we're taking my friend biking, two....

my truck needed the box replaced so I built a deck. TheBike Rack is part of the headache rack and folds back up out of the way. Could have gone for 7 bikes wide but 4 for now. Not so good for passengers tho.
