View Full Version : What's the best way to ride up Seymour?

I know everyone like to shuttle it, but that's not really my cup of tea. I really like riding uphill for my vertical.
What's the best way to ride up it? The road, trails, power lines, or dirt roads?
Are there any rules about not riding/hiking up the trails?
I think riding roads can be boring. It's nice to walk/ride up a new trail and get to see what to expect.
Seymour looks like a lot of fun. Seeing as how no one rides during the week, I'm going to ride it solo, so any advice on how to ride up it would be great.
I might join a shuttle run out there this weekend for a chance to meet other riders.
thanks guys!
I too dislike shuttling. I don't ride Seymour as much as Fromme, but I ususally just climb up the highway to the top of CBC. nice views along the way too.

Up Old Buck
Across Baden Powell
Join Mushroom at the powerlines (near Severed entrance)
Riding the road isn't much fun during ski season due to the amount of traffic.
Off season isn't all that much better as the motorcycle & sports car guys like to test their top speed & handling on the road.
Wasn't there a road cyclists hit on that road last year?

The cyclist was hit on the first switchback/sweeper once after entering the park (between BP trailhead and Mushroom lot). The sweeper right after Mushroom is another one to watch out for.
Traffic is very light if you can avoid the weekends and after 3:00 pm.

old buck all the way up to the pavement and then break the law and keep climbing on dirt up to mushroom lot. this is way more time and effort than the pavement, but it is much more scenic and relaxing.
i usually go through the mushroom lot to the end and hit the little trail to the end of CBC as this lets you bypass that long sweeping corner while climbing up.

...then break the law and keep climbing on dirt up to mushroom lot...
Has anyone ever asked Parks if it would be possible to open up that trail to bikes to have an off pavement route to the Mushroom lot?

Hey Skookum, I ride in the day during the week! I would be happy to climb Seymour with you! I usually go early as I work at 3:30 pm

even if it was just for uphill (ie no erosion, no bikes mowing down elderly hikers etc...) it would be a good improvement.
Maybe that side of the road is actually part of provincial park? Sometimes those trail designations aren't a product of logic, just boundary lines and red tape

Cool. I will shoot you guys a PM soon. I'm not 100% sure, but I think thursday or friday would be good depending on weather.
I just rode Fromme for a while. Fun, but not very long trails. I was surprised how much vertical I dropped in such little time compared to how long it took to ride up. Pipeline didn't seem to take more than 5 minutes to get to BP. The guy who owns the house on BP near the stream and dempsy parking lot is fun to talk with. I was surprised he was so freindly. People always told me the home owners hated bikers around there.
ohhh, btw, I'm not very fast going uphill because my bike weighs sooooo much. Anything lighter breaks for me. On the other hand I have no problem doing 2000 vertical meters in a day. I'm always down for 2-4 laps if possible.
Are the trails on seymour longer than fromme?
I'm not into vertical boulder fields, like some of the side trails I ventured into on lower fromme near crippler. I do like riding logs and skinnies with well placed drops or jumps. Anything with more flow than consecutive boulders at a 45degree drop angle, would be sweet.

so is it against the rules to ride or even hike the bike up the trails that are wide and easy for people to get around you?
also, where is mushroom parking lot on the map?

also, where is mushroom parking lot on the map?
It is called "Corkscrew Parking lot" on the map you posted.
Edit: Old Buck is legal up to the road crossing, not legal after. It is signed & gated.
Edit 2: BC parks PDF map for Mt. Seymour http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/parkpgs/mt_seymr/mtseymour_brochuremap.pdf
Edit 3: Interesting, the BC Parks map calls that parking lot the "Vancouver Picnic Area".
If you find the laps on fromme short a good way to do it is ride up the first lap then hike a bike up st georges for a second lap.

that or link the right trails together starting from the top.

lapping the top trails before dropping out certainly helps

actually the best thing to do is to pedal Seymour and Fromme in one day.
this way you get more trails, some xc, difference scenery on different mountains, etc.
and with the bridle path / twin bridges connector you can pedal between these two mountains without leaving dirt.
quite frankly, a double lap on either seymour or fromme is usually not as good as getting both in one day ... just MHO.

ok, so like when was the last time you actually did that? with the amount of shuttle action you've been putting in lately can you even do one of those climbs non-stop anymore? last time i saw you on fromme you were pushing by the third switchback.

I'm down to ride on friday. Thursday is going to rain all day, friday is going to be sunny.
How early do you guys want to ride? Any time after 9AM is good for me, I'm also down for multiple laps on some of the shorter trails near the top.
Is CBC closed right now? That's really the trail that has me interested. I also think BoogieMan looks killer, but might be pretty scary if the skinnies and logs are frozen or super slimy. Ned's also looks like a blast.
I will PM you guys on thursday to schedule a meeting time at Old Buck. My car has been acting funny lately so if I don't show up within 20 minutes of our meeting time, just ride without me, I'm most likely stuck on the side of the road at that point.
Doing both mountains sounds really cool, but maybe that will wait until a weekend day when I have all day to do it.
Where I'm from, we hike uphill for over 2000meters a day and ride up to 20-30K in a day too, so you can imagine how short some of the trails on Fromme seemed.

Its tough to resist the power of the dark side of the force.
Best Hike-a-bike all day epic in the lowermainland is hitting all the trails on Eagle and ending at the lake.

yeah im pretty hurtin, took over 5 hrs to do 2 laps of seymour and one lap of LSCR down to interriver last weekend. quite off where i should be but the season is early...

^^ that may be off your mark but its still more than what 90% of riders would consider an average ride
whats your route/lap through the LSCR?
^^ It's drinking season, not ride season.... I'm telling myself that anyways... Should have about 1500 hard miles in the 2006 bank by now but am sitting on about 500 on the pedal equipped machine and 1000 on the motard spark plug machine... and quite happy about it because it'll mean not being tired by the time the dry season is here and when big format ride season is at its best.
That said, anyone want to buy a road bike? Fuck road racing :D

somebody hacked ned's account!
No hackin action jackson, just gonna try a new angle on riding this year. As in more MTB and less riding with the emaciated 'take themselves to serious' homies who don't like it when I show up wearing baggies to team functions.

Anytime after 9am on Firday sounds good to me. I have to be done before dinner is my only requirement. And don't worry about speed you won't be the only slowpoke lol.
In terms of trails anything is fine with me. I do enjoy riding up trails rather than roads, as it makes it more interesting, but whatever works. I'll do anything really I just want to ride!

whats your route/lap through the LSCR?
in the LSCR you can hit the Camp Brick single tracks and then ride part of the BP down to Interriver ... it's just nice flowy singletrack, albeit really muddy in the winter. there's also the xc stuff out at the Figure 8 near rice lake.
combine the LSCR xc goods with Bridle and the Mt Seymour trails, plus Fromme, and you can get some pretty long rides going ...

Well, sorry guys I can't go biking Friday.
I went into a grocery store with my bike locked to my car. Came back out to find my fork stem, seat, and other small parts stolen. Nothing major, but I don't have a working bike right now. Scary thing is that I almost didn't lock it up because I thought no one would steal stuff so quickly. That would've been a stupid move considering my bike is worth $1000 more than my car. You can always spot a MTB addict by the fact that their bike is nicer than their car and clothes!
It sucks that theives in Vancouver know what good bike parts look like. In my old town, people didn't even realize that big beastly thing with wheels was even a BIKE!
I think I will need to make room inside my car for leaving it outside for even 10 minutes.
I'm going to replace as many parts as I can with my spare parts bin and buy a new stem on friday. Hopefully I can join some NSMBers for a ride this weekend.
Rumor has it that the snow level is going to drop to sea level tonight, should make for an interesting weekend on the mountain!

holy crap :| that sucks. hard to imagine people walking around with allen keys in their pockets just ready to strip a bike. as for leaving it in your car...that would just tempt someone to break in and steal it that way. best is just if you take it home - i NEVER run errands with my bike, but then i'm fairly paranoid.

That's too bad about your bike parts :(
I left my bike in my VW Westfalia van, with all the curtains shut except the front windshield. Someone smashed the little front corner window (the most expensive one!), and then couldn't figure out how to get the side door open or my bike out. I was lucky.
Shouldn't the police be cracking down on all this bike theft or something?
I think I will need to make room inside my car for leaving it outside for even 10 minutes.
I
It won't be much safer inside your car. Don't leave your bike outside EVER. Not for 10 minutes or even 10 seconds. People will steal it the first chance they get.

The ratio of good guys to bad must be way off here! What is the possibility that someone outfitted to strip a bike will come by in a 10 minute span and strip your bike, in a parking lot!!!!
What you need to do is go to Kamloops find yourself a Rattler put that in your car with your bike! That will teach'em!
