(Contrast fixed a bit)
Critique?
How do i get the sky to not blow out while still not under exposing the pics? most of these all but 1 was shot with flash.

first photo, centred comp, nothing much going on. blurry.
amazing clear, pretty nice composition and surprisingly i like the foreground stuff on the right. only bad thing is a little bit of a boring trick and the sky is crazy overexposed
three has an interesting idea going for it, but it looks too much like a snapshot with an OK angle, and it's tilted.
four, fix your contrast first

Are you shooting full manual?
If so you can mass with your depth of field. DOF is the amount of depth that remains in focus. Take for instance the shot with Ian Whipping. With a shorter depth of field you can keep the rider in focus, but have the backround blur behind him.
Bigger apertures create less DOF. Shooting Telephoto in Combination also adds to the blur. If you were to use a big aperture (Smaller number -- IE F2.8 ) and pull in from a ways away, you can make the rider POP from the backround. The trick is to have enough DOF to keep all of the rider in focus. With a small DOF his foot close to you for instance would be in focus, but the hand that is farthest away would be blurred. In this case you have to decrease the aperture (Higher number) until all of the rider stays in focus.
Flashes are cool, but running one on top of the camera lends to pretty average shots. If you have an external flash, try getting a cord and holding the flash in your hand or placing it somewhere. (this is why guys use remotes). It will also stop redeye if the flash doesn't shoot down the barrel of the lens.
With a flash, you can underexpose the shot when metering through the camera. I find that depending on the flash output I can underexpose by 2 stops and still get enough light in.
Expose for the sky and fill with the flash and you won't get that blown out sky effect.

Ian really doesn't stand out in these pictures but I think what Jay said sums up how to make your photos cleaner. I think if you had shot from the other side of the set you would've had better lighting as long as you weren't situated into the glare...My favourites are numbers 2 and 3 because of they're more vivid and that's your best whip shot in my opinion.
I shoot photos but I'm really not in the know of lots of photography terms. Anyone care to link me to a glossary of photography terms?, 'Twould be appreciated...

yes. You don't need to have Pocket wizards (although nice). You can pretty much just get a long cord and a cheap tripod to hold the flash. You can even use a velcro strap or Zip tie...
Ebay has some cheap flashes and gear. Check out places like Kerrisdale cameras for used gear, or pawn shops as well.
Do you have an external flash?
If so you can play with stuff like "Bounce". Try aiming the head of the flash upwards, but tape a flash card (Piece of paper) to the top of the flash to Bounce the flash back at the subject. Gets away from the Flash burn.
This is an awesome technique indoors as well. If you have a white ceiling, you can bounce the flash off the ceiling and get a much nicer light on the subject...

I did a barspin to bodycheck today....yes we should ride.
