looking at all those shots frankly this guy has better stuff than what i've been seeing in mags lately. it's funny how money and prizes will draw out the guys in hiding.

Its kinda weird, I dont see how these guys can be ams. If you can take a photo that good, ur doing something extremtly right, and should be be making some sweet money. But fact of the matter is Im guessing most of these guys live in Europe and somewhere that doesnt have a ton of mags, and that pay well, so there not considered "pros". But it really comes down to is what is considered a pro in this comp. Sure someone who makes a solid living off photography. But like i said if u live in a remote setting that has little known industry for Mountain Bike Magazines, its hard for someone to strictly make a living off photography. But ill give it up to these guys, there shots are gnarly, and hopefully you guys can get your name known and earn your respect as a mtn bike photographer, cuz uve definitly earned mine.

what mike is saying is right.
basically what's happening is $6000 of prizes is way better than dealing with mags and clients, sending in your shots, and not getting paid very much. hell, i'm thinking of not even trying to submit my shots to mags for the next 4 months and focusing all my efforts on the comp, 6k is a lot of money, and way more than i would earn making a hundred here and there.
if we leave it the way the comp is, it will generate the most amazing shots you'll ever see, way better than shots in mags, but the only problem is 'joe shcmoe' really isnt going to have any chance whatsoever.
guys like mike and i know we have a chance of making it. we have the equipment, and we have the riders. it's difficult, but the chance is still there.
but i'm just wondering what's gonna happen with all the guys who ride every weekend and shoot pics for the fun of it. they're not gonna get anything out of this comp, not even a weekly prize.

I don't think this comp is meant for guys like me who ride and take the occasional shot with a point-and-shoot. It's meant for the guys for who shooting is a hobby but they can't make the leap to the pros. Kind of like the Airprentice for riders. Gives a chance for someone to make it from bro to pro.

every single picture he has up in his nsmb gallery has been submitted to week two, it should guarantee him a win. but he coulda held off on some of them and submitted later to win those rounds.

true.
Who can enter?
This is not a pro contest. If your main source of income comes from photography you aren't eligible. If you've sold the odd shot but something else brings home your bacon you're in. If you aspire to be a pro but you are just getting started then giddy up - this could be your start. Primarily though we're looking for shots from Joe Shooter - a rider who also likes to take pictures of his or her riding crowd. This is a world wide contest - no matter where you live we hope to see your shots in the contest.

yeah Brad but there epic mtn scenary, and alot of people love shots like that. Personally I like a few of them but Id rather see a gnarly airtime, with nice scenary and nice colours
I think the first shot would be better without the rider who by the way looks like he's wearing a skirt :D

You guys should keep submitting, even if what's in there is intimidating. Keep in mind too that you've got more than 3 months of competition time left. That's a tonne of time to go out and snap more shots rather than relying on what you've got archived.
There are definitely some guys coming out of the woodwork, but who knows, maybe background checks on them will reveal some sort of photo-celebrity status elsewhere which would then disqualify them.
And on an opinionated personal note, getting shots published is cool for sure, but the payday from mags isn't nearly enough to establish some sort of career. I think having a stellar portfolio will do more for you when you're hunting down advertisers who need pro shots than what having a few published shots in a mag is going to do for you (aside from the ego boost :D)

You're right - sort of. It is like an Airprentice for aspiring shooters, but it's also supposed to encourage the ams out there to take their cameras along a little more often than usual and try taking some pics of their buddies, their fave trail, or whatever else is inspiring, and share them with the rest of us.
If everyone only entered races or contests because they expected to win, there wouldn't be many people competing - in anything. Try to win, but don't be discouraged by the other entries; use them as motivation to push yourself to do better than you normally would. Win or not, I guarantee you'll produce something better than you would have if you hadn't seen the quality of some of the other entries. And the winners can certainly be proud because the quality of the entries (and number of quality entries) is far surpassing what we expected - and that makes US stoked to see this contest producing these results in year one.

There is nothing like competition to get my blood goin... I checked out this judge's website and just looking at his style of photos and composition i can see i dont have anything that might grab his atention. Hopefully he has an open mind to other aspects of mountainbiking and other styles. I do like his style and wish i could take pics in those awesome locations, but i live in NJ.. But i already have ideas in me head. So it should be fun..
Just want to thank NSMB for getting me excited about photography again.

I know I probably won't win anything, but who cares? I've taken tons of wicked shots of biking and biking related shenanigans, so I'm gonna keep posting them up. You never know what the judge might be thinking.....
