I'm not so sure about third place though, it was a nice shot, but I definatly saw better ones.

1st. Good photo, probably would have been my choice too.

2nd. Not the best photo Mike submitted, but I'm biased here... I hate most any photo where I can tell there's an external flash (that and the lit up trees on the right are super distracting).

3rd. Awful, seriously, I saw so many better shots in there, what the hell?

Honourable Mention. I think it's a fun snapshot, because it looks like it's the edge of the world or something. Neat, but not exactly a good photo. I saw several better photos.

Here are some of the photos I think are better than anything other than 1st:

Edit: Now that I think about it, SL probably put the sub par runners up so as not to scare other AMs away from entering their photos.

Agreed. It doesn't really mean anything to come third, there's almost no chance that both photos before it will be disqualified, there's no prize being awarded other than bragging rights. So hey: why not encourage young shooters to get more stuff submitted into the comp?

Good choice on the winner. That really is a magazine quality photo.

Looking forward to the next weeks of photos to look through. I think there won't be nearly as many as a lot of people put up their best stuff in week 1. Not the best idea since the competition was so strong. Hopefully those people still have more great pictures to enter in future weeks...

Congrats mike, wicked looking picture. Although I must say the winner truly did deserve to win. That is magazine quality.

I agree that the first photo was great, but I was a little disappointed to see pro riders in the contest. I realize that this is a PHOTOGRAPHY contest, but having a professional rider available to shoot I'd say gives you a leg up on the competition. If there were 2 excellent photos, one of a pro LAUNCHING and another equally artistic shot that maybe even took more skill/time/effort without a pro rider is going to lose. I am going to disagree with the critics and say that I really liked the 3rd shot. It was just a kid on his bike having fun. I remember the first few "big" (by big I mean 5' +) drops or gaps I hit when I started riding when I was 13, no photo can really capture that feeling. But I think that 3rd one does about as good a job capturing that moment as possible. Just because he isn't inverted, in my opinion doesn't take away from the photo.

i think what does take away from the photo is the washed out look, lack of focus, and lack of originality.

but then again i don't know much about photos and i'm sure the guy who picked it sees something good in it

Having a "pro" rider doesnt neccessarly give u an advantage of a good photograph. Sure the trick might look sweet, and u might think because hes corked upsidedown its automatically a good photo. But you can make anything a good photo, you just have to know what your doing. And just cuz the trick is so unreal, doesnt make it a good photo either. I just happened to catch the best lighting on Chase that day. It could of been any1 riding that day and they wernt all "pros" Im sure if you told any1 who knows what their doing with a camera to take a photo of a some1 riding a 1 foot high latter bridge, they could find some way of taking a good photo and itd have just as good of a chance to win this contest as opposed to some1 shooting some1 25 feet in the air. With right lighting and correct setting, and knowing a little bit, trust me it could be done, maybe for week 2 ill shoot all basic riding, just to show every1 you can take a good photo without shooting "pros"

just my 2 cents

What I liked most about shot number two was that the rider is not the center of the photo, there is a whole scene going on people here and there. In the midst of all this there is a spotlight on a rider going big. It is a nice scene, not a technical masterpeice. I get the feeling of a nice relaxed atmosphere looking at that shot.

Scully im down, pople think u need 1035687563565$ setups to get a decent photo. Well u dont... I have a low end DSLR with 1 flash, nothing special, it works for me.

I wonder what would happen if you weren't able to submit pictures that had been taken with one off camera flash.

The winning shot rules - composition, color, texture are just awesome.

Though, I did not see ALL of the shots posted, I think the winning shot is well deserved and the judges have done a good job picking the best...

I AGRREE 100%. Best shot won, nuff said. and to emmens only 1 of my pics ive submitted in the contest have acully been with an off camera flash... which ws the Chase shot. And im pretty sure u can take a good photo without a remote flash, just know what your doing

Thanks for all the props. Stoked to get Sterling to have a minute to give some comments on one of my images.

For the record no remote flash was used in the making of my photo. Low end DSLR is where im at and you dont always need remote flashes to capture a memory. Im with you slang disposable would be fun for one week. :scream:
