Norco must have given him a sick deal, either that or his contract with Fiat/Rotwild wasn't going to be renewed. The Fiat/Rotwild guys gave him a house to live in and a car while he was out there.

A house and a car don't mean nothin if you arn't liven where u want to be. I would personally pay rather pay for a house and car and live here with all my buddies and everyone i grew up with than live in Austria having my house paid for along with a car. I think that shows that I got my priorities straight. For some reason I just think Gareth will fit perfectly in with the Norco crew. Good job and have fun ripping those bad boys around.

I wish the best of luck to gareth, but havn't you guys noticed that people after signing with norco have careers that tank sort of? Shaums is somewhat of an example. Once he was riding a norco, he was noticably slower on the track and was plagued by injuries. I think they make really bad bikes.

Well, i know its obviously the skill of the rider that is most important and im not denying that gareth is amazingly good. i donno. I just always feel sorry for amazingly skilled riders that get sucked into the norco trap. Another example i just thought of is Kyle Guay. He went from winning the BC Cup circuit hands down on his shaun palmer specialized dh bike, to doing less than stellar on his norco. And that was back to back years. Im pretty sure Kyle didnt get worse, so what gives?

That bike was blessed by Palmer - its just one of those things that makes someone better ;)

i think its more than Norco doesn't have the team budget to sponsor the Nathan Rennies and Cedric Gracias. Not that Dyer isn't an awesome rider, but he probably doesn't get anywhere near the same kind of salary

NORCO has a grass roots program, nothing more, nothing less. They would be the first ones to tell you that.

So their entire team is grassroots ? Saying Leech doesn't get a salary on top of travel expenses and all that ?
I could definitely believe it, but thats pretty rough for him.

If I recall correctly, Shaums retired from racing either before he moved to Norco or dirctly after. Also, a crappy bike wouldn't cause a rider to start riding badly, unless it was really bad. I've seen other rider excell on bikes far inferior to Norcos.
Also, Go Gareth! He's definatly one of my favorite riders, he just always looks like he's having a blast when he rides.

Are you sure about that? As far as I know Norco has a grassroots program where rippers can start, and then the Factory Team where Ryan, Shaums and Gareth, etc are.

The bottom line is NORCO does not spend alot of money on their team (compared to the other players such as SC or Specialized). How you want to classify the people on their team is up to you.

You have made your point that Norco doesn't have the budget that other teams do. Most people are curious as to wether guys like Dyer and Shaums are getting paid or on the free bike deal.
Pro = professional = getting a salary.
Grassroots = not professional = no cashflow.
There is definitely a difference between the two. Its not a random opinion of classification.

this is a totally different topic, but since you brought it up...
half of today's "pros" are not getting a salary. Everyone has their own criteria for what "pro" is. Look at Adam Hauck...He's placed top 5 in almost every Pro contest he has entered, but he isn't on salary with anyone, so does that not make him pro?
just look at other sports (skateboarding, surfing, etc...) anyone can call themselves a professional, and as long as your peers and the media recognize you as such it dosn't matter what kind of money is changing hands.
