View Full Version : Mid-level rear hubs. Does such a thing exist?

I'm looking for a nice, but not super expensive rear hub for my Bullit. At the top end of the spectrum there is Hadley, Chris King, and the DT Swiss Freeride hubs. Then there's the cheap shimano hubs. From what I can find though there aren't many solid, well priced hubs out there though.
In the upper mid-range there is Hope and Ringle, although the reviews on those seem to be mixed. My personal experience with my Ringle front hub was that it went through bearings quick and the bearings were quite costly to replace (special size). The ratchet systems on both are what I'm most worried about.
In the lower mid-range there are the DT Onyx hubs but they're apparently crap. I had a Dirty hustler hub on my last Bullit and while it didn't give me any trouble it had an awkward, hard to close QR/axle and crappy engagement.
The shimano hubs I've owned seem to last about 6 months before the freehub goes, the bearings are usually pretty notchy at this point too.
So are they're any GOOD hubs out there for like $200? I would love a Chris King but I just can't afford $600+ for a friggin hub.

36 engagement points, Ti freehub body, good quality. I've got one and love it.
The dirty hub is what you have decribed, they make a new and improved one that takes the place of the hustler, it is called the sanchez and has dealt with all these issues, it also has twice as many engagement points. I would give this a shot.
i have a Onyx rear hub that is several seasons old and its been mint..
mind u its a total silent engagement thou.. so if u want a noisy hub u dont want one...

i can back this up, last year at the IDNS, the guy at the dirty booth took appart both hubs and showed me the differences in the freehubs. between the 'hustler' and the new and improved un named hub.

I sure reccomend the Hopes for rear hubs... Great value! I am currently running 3 of them, 2 Big-uns and a Bulb. Have run Hopes for years...one of the Big-uns is their original style, still going strong!
Stupid-strong, maintanance is retarded easy (no tools!), ti freehub-body, different axlekits available so you don't need to buy a new hub if you change bikes, and they look pretty to boot! Available in many colours, if that's your thing. I just stick to silver.
Jensonusa.com carries them for good prices. Try ebay, too.

The new Dirty hub is called the Sanchez and features more engagement points than your standard Shimano or Formula hub. It's heavy though, and definitely doesn't have the 'feel' of its higher priced comptitors.
If I recall, the hub had an MSRP of $180 (cad), but I'm not sure that the production version is available at your LBS yet. I can't really comment on durability because the only ones I've seen were prototypes that were still in development -- the things might have changed since I saw them last.

Just get a hope rear hub, I ran one on a big hit for a year with no problems. It isn't quite as loud as a ringle but it sounds nice (if you care about that sort of thing). Parts fit very well and tight on the hope hub, its a great buy.

I can vouch for the Ringle on the rear. No probs all year, and makes lots of noise if you care about that. My wife likes it because she can hear me coming...

Alright, you guys have got me giving some more thought to the Hope Bulb. My only concern is that with the Ti freehub body I'm going to have to run an expensive cassette with alloy carrier to stop the teeth getting mangled. Do you guys that run them use cheap cassettes(riveted, individual cogs with spacers)? and if so does the freehub get chewed up?
I'll check out the new Dirty hub as well. Where in Vancouver carries them?

For Dirty Parts,
AKA in Port Moody has them in house, I would check with Overtime in Coquitlam first, they do have a set of Dirty Cranks and might have the hubs. I know Gary could order it in.
It is heavier, but you won't break it. And its got tons of engagments and echos off the walls if your into that.

id run a Hope Bulb everytime! though if its a bit too much $$, look into the Woodman series of hubs.....great quality for mid-priced hubs!
