Heres my not quite finished road bike with a temporary replacement fork. Its one of ten custom bikes made locally for the Seattle race team about 12 years ago. The rear end is so short that the tire (23) must be deflated to remove the rear wheel. Its way fast but I don't ride it anymore.

I don't have pictures either. My bike is an early '90's Concorde Squadra with a steel frame and equally ancient mtb pedals. It was my introduction to road riding when I bought it about 5 years ago for $400.

When I'm a working person again I'll get something light and speedy, maybe make the Concorde a touring bike.

dude that bike is georgeous. i'll be picking up a turbo frame tonight for $200 to repalce my busted cannondale frame. damn front der got caught up in the chain somehow and got ripped right outta the frame. i was left with a loonie sized hole at the bottom of the seat tube. no chance for repair and no warranty - crash replacement offer only, and only if i could find my original receipt.

Maybe everyone can share experiences. "dont mean to jack the thread"

My road bike is a Cove Stiffee with front/rear 2.6 30psi tires that I use for my 60km daily commute to work.

I want to get a full on road bike but never have even touched one. My question is what is it like compared to a regular bike? Should I take the plunge?

Rat
12-08-2005, 09:40 AM
Silk youll be amazed how fast you go. BUT as a winter commuter you should toss some 1.5 slicks on your stiffy and pump em up to 80PSI Makes it pretty fun. I used to do a similar commute to you but in reverse and the slick tires rocked, so many areas where you can go so fast. Actually a MB with 80PSI slicks is a real blast in the endowment lands. It is so fast and sketchy youll be pissing your pants.

yeah, the speed is sweet on a road bike, but an mtb with slicks can be just as good

I've used nearly every format except a chopper bike for commuting and know full well that for commuting in Van the rigid MTB with pizza cutter tread is the best of the best for snotty conditions, dicing it up in traffic, linking pavement with dirt trails and longevity. Not to say a roadie is a bad commuter bike it's just if you buy a nice one then you wouldn't want it to get demo'd by some schmuck who cuts you off or T-bones you while yapping on their cell phone.

Used to do the 100+ mile night rides on setups like this one (oh, about 15+ years before disc brakes) and I know full well if/when I move back to Van I'll be riding this bike to work. Might even get a set of Mavic SpeedCity 700c disc hoops for it to get the speed up a bit.

snip, yer not invited into my garage

PS: if you do get a road bike just get a Jake the Snake for starters. It's a little easier to get used to than an aggro pavement razor and if you decide you like road ripping you can easily sell it and get into a faster race-oriented bike. Right now's a good time year to buy a 'cross bike as the season is wrapping up and guys are flogging their bikes.

there's one big advantage to communting on a slow bike, when you get on the road bike for a tear you are unbelievably fast. i found a while back after riding the road bike a lot that it was difficult going back to the mtb. on the road bike i was pretty much pushin a 54 x 14/12 all the time, but the 120psi skinny tires just made it so nice. chasin down cars on the viaduct it always a blast

sanrensho
12-08-2005, 10:20 AM
I second the recommendation for a cyclocross bike as a commuter, Jake or JtS. You're looking at about 20 pounds stock.

A road bar and roadie position is MUCH better for climbing. More hand positions and better leverage. Bar ends on a short mtb bar are decent for climbing, but I doubt you are using those right now.

Plus, with a road/'cross bike, you get a big 52x11 gear.

I gotta agree for the best compromise of speed/safety/manueverability you can't beat an old steel HT with slicks

Jamis has some nice steel framed road bikes including a cross bike

I put together an electra 8-ball and rode it around down town for laughs, choppers are terrible for anything but looking cool

Heh, the Electra's are fine rides for flat short commutes, I'd buy one if I had the space in the corral. I bought a 16" one for #1 grom and #2 is on it now ripping it up on the kiddy ramps and the giant half pipe up at the other mailbox... on training wheels nonetheless.

Silk, that Dew is a great bike, I'd own one of them too but my Hummer is very close and it'd beasy to put on some cable disc brakes and drop bars. Kenji is right though, the JtS is a great 'fender bike'. I've had a couple of 'em now and they're super easy to sell if you find they're too slow for your liking. Just put some v-brakes on them since the canti's chew rims/pads up too quick and have zilcho brake power.

TomT

When i was living in Van I used my old RM Fusion with 2.1 80psi tires and let me tell you it was a blast!! I even road up Seymour for the first ripper, up the trails that is! they hooked up better then my 2.1's did!

Personally I would have to say the perfect commuter would have to be one of the Specialized Sirrus bikes. 700c wheels, disc brakes, Road Cranks with MTB cassettes, its a perfect set up. although any 700c with discs and a flat bar(about shoulder width wide) is perfect in my books.

I'd say get a cross bike as well. I've been using a JTS for commuting this year and it's perfect. You can go pretty much anywhere with and throwing a couple trails and dirt paths in makes the ride more fun. For city riding I would recommend getting one with brake levers on the bars as well. Also with the Kona's they use MTB hubs on the rear so the spacing is different than road wheels.

Just to clarify, the Kona flat bar bikes are 135 OLD (mtb) but the Jake/JtS cross bikes are 130 OLD (road).

The cyclocross levers are very useful for signaling in traffic.

2006 catalog shows the JtS spec'ed with a 105 rear hub, and the Jake spec'ed with a FH-M3300 hub. AFAIK, the latter is a Sora road hub (FH-3300).

The Dew series bikes are 135 OLD to enable disc brakes (mtb disc hubs).

Or if you can spend a bit more money, a Lemond Poprad Disc... they are about $1700-1800 US, but it comes with an awesome spec for the price. ten speed new-105, avid ball bearing 7 disc brakes, and a carbon disc-mount cyclocross fork that normally sells by itself for $400.

the rear brake is mounted on the chainstay in such a way that it doesn't interfere with mounting a wide, full coverage fender.

it's also sold as the Trek "Portland" with almost the same spec.

The only downside is it comes with a 48/36 cyclocross crank, for pavement use, I'd switch rings to 53/39.

You will be asked for advice on all things, and a festive gathering will be held in your honour at Britannia park where people from all over the neighborhood will come wearing weird outfits and carrying handmade lanterns. Strange bands with names containing punctuation characters will play discordant music and everyone will sway to the non-existant beat.

I want to get a full on road bike but never have even touched one. My question is what is it like compared to a regular bike? Should I take the plunge?

Brodie Romax!

I would love to have disc brakes on my road bike!

I bought my wife a 3 speed Hawiian electra for her birthday, I love ripping around the block on it. I have been told though if a new bike comes in the garage thier better be one going out.

we were at the electra display 04 interbike and some old guy with a pony tail told us that women buy bikes differently. They will come in ,dig the style/color and just buy the bike .Sure nuff 2 women come in look at the cataloge and say " I want the Betty"

didnt care how many speeds/features or nothing

Built TODAY as my city bike.

Mostly tiagra level parts, cheap Fetish SAC Aero frame from ebay, $82 (USD) Performance/Kinesis Forte Axis carbon fork. 105 hubs, mavic cxp22 rims, 32 DT spokes.

Still waiting for a braze-on front derailleur, so my hill climbing will be limited to mashing up in 52-19 for a few days.

Are those regular mtb shifters, or the flat bar road shifters? If the former, how well do they work with road brakes?

Just change gears with your fingers, or if your crafty back pedal with the right gear in the back and the chain will roll off for you.

One more photo, now with closeup... showing the fork better.

I'm learning it's hard to photograph something that is glossy and black. The fork is one of these:

the brake levers are these, I think they have some sort of special pull ratio designed for dual-pivot road brakes. I know if you try using something like LX or XT v-brake levers with road brakes you get weird results. These ones use a mountain bike sized barrel on the end of the cable, not a road brake cable.

OK, I get it. Those shifters are from the flat bar road group. What is the total build weight?

thewalrus
12-12-2005, 11:10 PM
Feels like around 20 pounds... Could be anywhere from 19 to 22, I'm guessing. It's about the same as my Specialized, but the other bike has 1.5 pounds of seatbag, two lights, and two bottle cages on it. I did weigh some of the parts, when I get around to it the stem (350 gram adjustable!) will get replaced with something more reasonable. also the rear tire is wire bead, I'll save 1/4 lb just by changing to a folding tire.

agreed. for commuting they are amazing, but for a longer road ride they are just extra weight that you don't need.

Oh, I dunno about that... Slap down enough long rides in the winter involviong hills, especially when it's wet and sloppy out, and you might not be so quick to say that. Funny how your hands can't seem to squeeze the calipers hard enough in the cold/wet and funnier how you rip through a set of road pads in under a week of wet riding... To each their own though.

TomT
12-14-2005, 01:54 PM
i didn't even think about winter riding Ned. Good point. i guess i just thought that people riding though the winter months would be either running a V-brake or discs anyways. Its rare you find someone using a proper road bike through the winter months, atleast out east.

I'm going to take it out on some epics this coming summer. Tiger Mtn. would not be much fun, but I'm thinking Ranger Creek would be a riot. I'm still looking for an older lugged-steel frame to build up for a sunny-day bike.

p.s. - how many continuity issues can you spot between the two photos of my bike?:)

Used to have a sweet Devinci Millenium, but had to flog it for house repairs after only having it for about 4 months. Thought my days of road riding were over - sad, because the speed bug had bitten me. Man, road bikes are fast!!
A buddy at work upgraded to a Pinarello, so he threw his old frame at me. It took some time and some artful scrounging, but here she is. Pretty stealthy.
Unfortunately, I finished building it just before our steady down-pour began, so she's been hanging in the garage just waiting for a ride.

Cheers,

Mike E.

holy crap man, you must be like 7ft tall!

Mike E.
03-03-2006, 05:14 PM
...only 6'2" with long legs. The buddy that gave the frame to me is about 1/2" taller than me, so it should work - plus the price was right!?!
If I find it too big, well then I guess I get to go shopping for a frame - always a good time.

Cheers,

Mike E.

Banshee Scandium/Carbon with Durace 10spd... sometimes it freaks me out going downhill on a sub 15lb bike - It's a one off and not sold anywhere... when I got it I pulled all the goofy reflectors off and put the creature on the headtube.

The Easton SLX is a GREAT fork, I've been using it for the last 2 seasons on a Litespeed. Sub 300g and feels just as stiff as any other carbon fork that I've used.
