I'm looking for some thick cold weather bike pants... MEC has some that look okay but I'm not so sure about the stitching on them.
would anyone like to suggest something like this:
black or very dary grey colour
thick material, strong stitching
belt loops, preferably no elastic in the waist
velcro or something to cinch the right leg cuff to prevent it from being eaten by the chainring
not $150 per pair of pants

I have seen the roach pants, they look very strong...
Hoping to find something more reasonable like $70-95 for a pair of pants

The only gear that has belt loops that I know off would be any of the old Rip n Hammer which are next to impossible to find. The only other option I know off would be from motocross. Shift makes a pair called Squadron. They have belt loops. The cheapest I have seen is through Ebay.
Try Mace or Hoots, both come in cargo's with beltloops and are heavy duty nylon. The nylon is water resistent and doesn't absorb any water when soaked. Both cost from $100 - $150 depending on the store.

Buddy of mine has a pair of Mace. Barely 2 months old and the stitching is falling apart already.
Hoots stuff I had was great. Had for 6 months and it took a crash to pull some stitching. Great gear.

For cold/wet weather riding I use snowboard pants. They are waterproof, vented, strong, have lots of pockets, and have the belt loops you're looking for. Fit the pads underneath fine.
You can get them pretty cheap if you hit a sale of last seasons gear.
Hunt around and see what you can find. I scored a pair of Burton Biolites last season just for riding my bike in, and they have held up better than anything I've bought that has been cycling specific.

I have a set of Grey Taslon Nylon IDUN pants. They have a WP treatment on them. They don't breathe in a static environment, but on the bike, they should be fine. They have vents too, and are lined with mesh fabric. I have yet to try them out in the rain though.

I picked up a pair of AXO pants (bmx style maybe) from the North shore sports swap for $25... ankle cuffs both sides to keep from getting eaten by the chain, good sturdy construction and hard thigh protection bit. No belt loops, but my Mace pants cost $150 plus and I think I'd rather wear the Axo's... check the sports swap periodically - they've got Troy lee pants for $200... but I think you can get the Axo's for cheap on pricepoint or something similar as well... good luck! Oh, and you could always use a spray-on waterproofer.

my boyfriend said he saw somebody riding down cbc who had taken plastic garbage bags and cut them into giant rectangles and then taped them onto their legs. that might be the cheapest solution.
that sounds like harold, one of the guys i ride with..he tends to use garbage bags to keep himself dry

ah the age old riding pants quandry.
best luck i've had is with dickies style twill from Mark's (..work wearhouse). I've got crosscountry skiing in them and let me tell you, you fall down a lot. The problem is the fabric is strong enough that if you catch on something the seams will come undone, but it's not as big a prolem as it seems, since you can just take the pants off and run em through a sewing machine and you're good to go. Heavy duty stitching is so overrated. If the sttching doesn't go the faric will and then your gear is a write off. I suppose you could always make paper with it.
If you need more waterproofing than you get with these sort of pants then just keep the scotchguard treatment topped up, it wears off with time and washing. And if you want to go swimming well there's always sewing on a nylon butt pad and using copious amounts of umbrella juice: This sort of stuff (http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/revivex_water_repellent_outerwear.html)

You might also get some sewer to sew on some belt loops on pants you like. I know someone who has done that to a pair of Roach.

Wouldn't wearing cotton when it's raining and cold be a bad idea?

You'd think. but they are generally 65% polyester, which is what makes them so tough compared to jeans. And all brands of these things come with some sort of scotchguard type thing, so they are actually water repellent for the first wash or two anyway.

2 words: Value Village - I got my most recent pair of bike pants there - North Face convertable cargos - black rip-stop nylon - $8.00 - and they look/feel/smell like NEW (they are $100 new/retail). The Abbotsford Value Village always seems to have 20-30 pairs of nylon or poly cargo pants of different weights/styles. For $8 each you can buy three a year - wreck em and not worry!
Also - last trip I found a long-sleeve No Fear moto style shirt with reinforced elbows - thin poly knit for $11.99!

I would have to say Rockgardn again (love their gloves too!). I have tried Roach and they fit great look and feel good, BUT the material is thin and one drop on to the rear tire and they are ruined (unless you like the "chaps" look).

Also purchased at Value Village in Abby:
my knee-shin guard combo (old school hard faced Puma socce shinnies and some really nice hard-faced roller-blade knees - they fit togther like someone planned it) - total cost - under $10.00 - and I fall lots and they are working great.
Axiom winter riding gloves - $5.00 (still had the tag on them)
For some reason, some people just love to cast off there slightly older gear at this VV - I always see North Face, Taiga, Nike, etc. etc. gear - lots of fleece - lots of goretex (even saw a North Face Gortex jacket once!)
