If anyone has a master cylinder for a Hayes Mag (2002-2004) and don't need it anymore because they switched to Juicys, Hopes, Maguras. I'll be more than happy to take it off your hands.

Thanks. :)

It's (about) a $12 part that your LBS should have.

Master cylinder?

Those things are pretty pricey, which is why I'm asking if anyone on the boards has a used one that still works but they don't need it anymore. I'm pretty sure you're thinking of the wrong part.

The master cylinder is the contents inside a lever body or a hydro brake lever.

Check with your LBS, but I'm pretty sure this is the one you need:

Unfortunately, I need this one for my Purples.

It's the piston. This is the part that usually wears out b/c the rubber seals harden or tear. Skunkworks - do you need the whole kit? What's wrong with your Mags anway?

What do you offer in exchange?

Unfortunately, I need this one for my Purples. If it's just the pushrod/piston that isn't working, that is what he'll need. If the cartridge requires replacing, it will cost quite a bit more.

I'd like to get some of that grease that comes with the kits. :)

I'm GUESSING that it is the master cylinder that has gone kaput.

Here's the story:

Before, when I bleed my brakes, I never push the piston in. And so, when my pads wore down, I just rebled without checking the pads nor did I push the pistons back in. When I finally stuck a new pair of pads in there, due to the piston being so far out, the lever would only go a tiny bit before locking the brake up completely.

Easy fix, no? Too much fluid in system. Push pistons back into bore and rebleed. I did that, well, did it a couple times. Perfect, fine bleed. Just that now, my lever would be spongy and sink pretty close to the handlebar. NOT air in the lines. I completely blew it out. And NOT piston problem because that was checked over. And also NOT leaks or loose fittings.

So I'm assuming that it is definitely something to do with the master cylinder.

And yes, it is the big mass of black that HTboy18 has posted.

Thanks for the offers, contact me via PMS?

When the system is "too" full of oil, you should push the pistons back while the bleeder hole is open. Better yet, do it from the caliper - get setup like you're going to start bleeding (no air in the hose), then open the bleeder valve and do a "reverse" bleed.

If the bladder is leaking, or one of the seals is blown, you should see oil leaking. If not, then I would doubt that it is blown and you need to bleed it again.

When you put in new pads, walk the pistons back. Put on the new pads. Put your wheel back on. Now, place something like a business card between the rotor an pad (both sides). Squeeze the lever slow and hard about 15 to 20 times. This will force the oil back into the resevoir, and you won't have any brake pad drag.

I can't feel or see anywhere with brake fluid on it. I've checked the banjo fittings, felt around the lever body, everything was nice and dry. Lines are fine as well.

However, when I squeezed the lever today, it definitely was closer to the handlebar than when I bleeded it multiple times on Saturday.

And Switch, I found those out AFTER I bled it. Oh well, thanks for the help. :)

I'll see if I can afford to put a new master cylinder on. If not, barspin steez.
