Uh, I have everything from a Brownie Holidae, to a Konica Autoreflex T. Lots of old box cameras and wierd old stuff. I like old cameras.

I mostly use the Konica, and my dad's Pentax (MF).

When I got batteries, my dad fucking took it and put a roll of film in it before I had a chance, which annoyed the piss out of me due to it being my fucking camera and I hadn't even used it yet. He developped that last night, though, so I'm going to go buy some film this week. I'll probably photogay it up a bunch after Halloween, because I have a ton of stuff due then.

Rats.

I figured it looked like a newer one. Oh well. I need to either find mercury batteries, or make a voltage regulator circuit for my FT. The air cells aren't really too good, given that they're expensive, and don't last long.

Looks like you were hanging your mitts elbow deep into the old lady underwear on the cruise ships to get a camera quiver like that one going. Carumba... they must tip well for your room service ;)

Experts.... what big format film camera would you get and why? I was thinking about getting something of that type but am curious what the experienced know and say.

A couple things:
-They're incredibly quiet. This might not sound important, but they're a high end photojournalism camera, and there are times when you REALLY don't want people knowing you took a photo.
-They're incredibly well built. Good materials, sturdy construction=unless you run it over, it's a very solid investment.
-The lens actually goes inside the camera. I'm not quite sure on how all this works (I've never owned one), but basically it means you can get a waaaay wider angle with no distortion. Uh, I'm trying to think of an example, but like, failing. Can anyone explain this better? Fergs?

The downside (or not?) to them is you actually have to know how to use a camera.

they are rangefinder cameras. you do not look through the lens, but throught the viewfinder. there is no auto focus, and to focus you esitimate the distance to the object and make the focal adjustments on the lens. this means there is no way of making things perfectly in focus (without tape measure)

this is good for photojournalism, and photographers who like bringing it back to the basics.

Well this isn't quite correct. A rangefinder camera focuses through triangulation. It is true that you're not looking through the lens when you focus, but through the viewfinder instead. However, there is a second viewfinder window on the other side of the lens, and the image from it is composited on the image in the main viewfinder. Adjusting the focus of the lens also adjusts how this second viewfinder image is composited. The lens is in focus when the composited images are perfectly lined up. This means that you can achieve very accurate focusing in extreme low light conditions, much better in fact than with a regular SLR (better even than the autofocus on an SLR).

In addition to what Brian suggested, the Leica lenses are reason enough to buy a Leica body. Overall, as a group of lenses, they have a higher average score on MTF charts than any other set of lenses. Some people say that they are the best lenses you can buy, hands down. And in the end, if you're looking to take high quality photos, then the most important factor is the lens that is bending and transfering the light to the film.

This solves much confusion, as I have a Yashika rangefinder camera that I forgot to list, and I can definitely focus in the viewfinder with it. I was wondering why a Leica wouldn't.

the reason I gave away that lens is cuz it has mold growing inside it, making it give halos around objects and therefor making it useless. take a look at it sometime :)

Yeah I know, I took apart the lens the second I got home, cleaned out all the glass and totally fixed the problem. It took me longer to bike up the hill from the seabus to meet you at starbucks. Anymore "useless" lenses you want to give me? Also, why the gajillion lenses?
