How would I attach two supports if each of them are like 6 inch wide trees? Nails are definitely not long enough. Thanks

longer spikes - you can get up to 12" long spikes/nails at your hardware store. also, if you partially notch both supports you can use a shorter (6 or 8") nail.

will the wood crack when I hammer the spikes in??

notch your stringers together then use twisted galvanized nails as they reduce the change of splitting the grain. if you leave a good 6 to 8 inches from the end of the stringer you shouldn't split the wood.

or maybe predrill it w/ a cordless and a pretty long drill bit.

i wouldnt bother, to much work. we tried a hand drill back in the day and they are near the efficiancy of a cordless. i find that cutting a propper length on a stringer conbined with the use of spiraled galvanized nails works fine.

I would have to disagree about a cordless being as efficient as a hand drill. my cordless will take yer hand drill action to town.

....

as far as how to avoid splitting the stringer the drill option would work just fine.

in the above stated situation I would most likely get some 12" spikes like synchro suggests , but if I was worried about splitting the sstringer I might consider predrilling w a skinnier bit than the spike, then I would spike it w/ a nice spiral galvanised like coffeedude sez.
