View Full Version : NWD 6 Premiere - who was there?

What was the vibe like?

I couldn't make it but it's always interesting to compare the Vegas crowd and the Vancouver crowd. In Vegas the place is of course crawling with industry folks - most of whom are more into XC (not that there is anything wrong with that) while the Vancouver crowd actually knows what time it is.

Anyway - biggest cheer? Which segment did you like best? What about the cinematography (I liked the way Vanderham's scene was shot best)? Music?

Who stood out? Did anybody disappoint?

I thought this year's opener was a HUGE improvement over last year.

Feed me back.
Thanks

good room last night. i was surprised at the number of women there, way up over recent years. big cheers for darren and wade at the start of their segments. big cheer for the base jumper at the start too. lotsa noise for gully. biggest noise was probabaly bourdan coming up short on the big gap.

great shooting and some big lines - but lots of the same thing over and over again. street stuff was cool - lenoksy had some great moves line the bunny hop to the hand railing. its too bad that knarly, tech shore type lines don't transfer well to film.

worthwhile checkin it out, but i doubt i spend $$ for the dvd

ps - music was great and agree on the opening segment. out of all the riders darren's. lenosky's and gully's stood out. gully's impressed me the most because; the shooting and the music was great and as a newer rider he came across as someone to watch for the future. paul b seems to one dimensionsal, dj/trickster only.

the g banger was prolly one of the best seggy's i think. berrecloth had a good showing but nothing 2 steps above the rest(like he usually is) bourdon doing flips n straight airs was sweet. and ahhh chase and vanderham were pretty good. straight and zink were kinda dissapointments but paul b definitly had a nice seggy to finish it off.

the movie definitly looked rushed, cheesy repetitive intros of the posters.. horrible music escept like 2 songs. but the best riding ive seen in a movie

Ya, definitely cool to see so many girls out. Darren's segy was beautiful, and of course it was so great to hear all the noise for our locals... I'd say the most noise all night was right from Gully, when he was fertilizing our driveway...:scream: nice boy to get out of the car first tho!

haha! that's for posting under my avatar last night Gully! You and Sage are little unit slappers...

I was a varied crowd at Dicks on Dicks. Bar stars and sweathogs mixed in with a bunch of degenerate wear your favorite biking industry related t-shirt clad mountain bikers.

The movie:
It was a real changing of the guard I thought. McCaul and the rest of the younger riders seemed to dominate the skies while Watson, Schley and Simmons seemed to have been pushed back to an elder statesman segment. Simmons' line was vintage Wade. Big, dicey and basically nutbar. Yay, team old guys!

On the walk back to the truck, we noticed every other car had a bike rack or a Cove sticker on the back window. It was almost as if a chunk of the shore set up an annex amongst urbanites, junkies and specialty grocery stores. Very nice evening indeed.

The riding was good but as a film it was pretty poor.

The music was total crap and the typical short MTV edit and speeded-up footage bored the crap out of me by halfway. Bring on Roam... Riding wise Berrecloth's section was miles more creative and better ridden than anyone elses. All the other nu skool kids look ragged by comparision, and nice slow mo with the lake in the background at the end of his seggy.

The best bit of the film had to be the cable shot of Wade's multi-hit line.
Inspired building. That's the only bit I wanna see again.

I thought Darren's segment was by far the best. The lines he threw done were large, and stomped. Everything he hit looked butter. And tossing 3's off road gaps is just plain retarded, and I thought recieved the loudest cheer. All in all I thought it was good movie, got me stoked to ride.

I thought Sweatshop Union looked like the Backstreet Boys with attitude, but their music is good.

it was....ok, its not something i'd buy though.
some choices of the soundtrack where pretty good like the megadeath-symphony of destruction for berrecloth's section and listening to dio's holy diver while watching some riding was pretty cool.
the beginning was great but it died out for me the further it went on, however paul b's finally was pretty sick.
if i could do it all over again i probably wouldnt go.

That was awesome. Saw it in Whistler tonight. I love the way videos are being done this year. More soulful, more focused on nice shots instead of getting a shot where the top left of the screen is the takeoff and the bottom right is the landing. Every video is just awesome and we owe it all to Collective and its amazing influence on sports vids

i cant stand the nwd filming technique, it makes everything look to 'hollywood' the large cable cam shots, the way they shoot it, it just doesnt get me pumped. personaly i would love to see it on an old school grainy cam with the lip in the left, and the landing to the right, than i would the way nwd 6 is filmed.. colective filming is money.. nwd6 has alot of amazing lines, i just dont like the way they film/persent it.

Have you seen #6? Cause with 1-5 I fully agree with everything you said but 6 is totally different. Like I said, very much influenced by the style of Collective. I was fully expecting more gnarthrashcore music with 1/2 second shots where they cut out the take off and the landing and just show the air but I was very pleasantly surprised. Anyways I can see people not liking it because it's different, same as Hit List was so different from all the other Ski Movie MSP videos. But this new style is really suiting my preferences.

yeah i have seen 6. i was at the cove premier, though 6 has come a LONG way from the last couple nwd movies. i still found thier filming on the trails with the long cable cam shots to look way to 'hollywood' i dont know if its just that the colours are so saturated on screen or what, it just doesnt get me pumped.. the way the colective was flimed. with the material filmed in nwd6 would be the best movie ever produced in my mind, i do like very much how Nwd films thier Dj sections, very efective looks awesome! but thier shots in the forest and such on trails, doesnt get me saying 'holy shit'.

worst thing about the movie was for sure the music. i really didnt like it at all, not specifically because it didnt go well with the riding, it just plain sucked. it was also pretty tiring watching almost every single shot in slow motion "for effect" it really wears thin after awhile. other than that i thought the riding was pretty off the hook, specifically paul b's 720 and 3 whip, most of lenoskys/chase's sections, and i thought kirt vories ladder bridge-to-sniper-landing-360 attempt was rediculous as hell. my favorite part for sure was seeing that massive shore-style line through that ravine, it was an awesome contrast from all the utah dust and big stepdowns (not that theres anything wrong with that). also cedrics entire part was one of the coolest/creative sections with reference to the rider specifically, like bolivia?? who the hell would have thought? it really blew my mind. overall its not a movie i would buy because its not one i would keep throwing in the player to get me through the off season/get me out the door to go ride. they would have been better off not "selling their soul for rock n' roll bitch." but then again disorder has never really been about soul. anyway, for the kind of movie everyone comes to expect from Freeride, they definetly delivered.

As a construction it's about twice the length of your wallride on Salvation :dizzy: but they got a close up, a cable and a fixed
pan on that alone. That's the difference between having an eye
for it (as they say !) and errrr not.

IMO.

it's definitely a big line and the construction looks good - its easy to see that from the vid. you can tell from wade's section where he misses the ladder and clips the tree that you go thru there with a lot of speed. i know it was a lot of work to create that section, which is part of my question. i look at that line and see some missed potential considering the amount of materials and effort involved.

NWD really a let down, nothing to really good in it.Some really big jumps and some cool single trickers. Slow mo is lame for the whole video. The music sucked. Carlin Dunns a complete hardass, ill throw robbie bourdon into that category also. Seriously i dont know why robbie bourdon is still riding for movies. Who really gets amped watching his part? Also they should really stop using really good downhillers for bad locations. Bolivia was lame, they should show some really gnarly downhill trails in realtime to show the speed of it all. Worth the watch just to realize that theres way better movies out there.

waaaay to much slowmo, way to much jumping, not enough trails....I left feeling like I was watching mountain bikers trying way to hard to be bmx'ers....lenosky's lines were pretty sweet though, and I dug the way to short section of wade actually flowing some techy trails, and berreclothe's was alright.....oh, and utah is super played......get over it already....

i am just gonna grab a digi cam go down to stanley park and start shooting. none of the riders have any talent, so i should be able just to grab bums off the streeet to do the same thing right?

i mean the riding was so crappy, i bet the bumfights crew could do better. you see how they just kept hitting trees, especialy that old guy.

im not even gonna edit the fucker either, as long as there is no slo mo and some emo playing in the background (ill just play this on the ghetto blaster as im taping) all you fuckers will buy it right? cause all the other videos suck so bad.
