View Full Version : Buy Or Not Urgent
OK, here is my dilemma.
I got this bike in Whistler the guy's holding for me for the weekend, is very sweet and all but I think is was used as rental in Whistler, I'll pay him 1800 on it.... I know I can buy a similar one at Whistler Mountain for around 1600, I thought of putting the pictures here so I can have more opinions... http://www.pinkbike.com/modules/buysell/?op=view&image=137065
It doesn't look very abused... what do you think?? It's worth it?
i just dont trust park bikes, that being said that one does look nice, but it could have just been spit shined for the pictures. deff a park bike.

You honestly cant tell much by any picture or when it was taken. Unless you can go see the bike up close and test it out, dont even bother.

I'm pretty sure it says Stab Garbanzo, which means a park bike.

What do you mean by "park bike"?? You don't trust the bike itself or only the ones that have been rented??
There's another one too, almost the same but no Dee Max, never rented, but I don't know if I can get this same price... In this case would you trust it?
Surely I'm going to see the bike before I buy it, but I don't want to go to Whistler without deciding.... Also I want to ride whistler this last weekend, I never been there.

Compared to the park bikes I've seen in person that one looks mint! Most of the rental Kona's barely have paint left on them. If the pivots are in good shape as well as the other parts. Giver.

Before you buy either have a buddy who is a mechanic come with you to check the bike over. Or have him meet you at a local shop to have a mechanic look it over.
You wouldn't buy a used car without having a mechanic look it over.

I would have no problem paying $1800 for tht bike barring any major damage.
I've never seen the bikes in whistler, so I don't know how to compare this one to the ones in whistler. This one seems to be in good condition, but who nows... I don't have a friend that is mechanic to....
People seem to have something against these bikes. I don't know if it is because of the bike itself or because they have been rented, if so I have the other one never rented too, I can go for it, but no Dee Max.....
And I'm not buying crap because it's cheap, I can buy a broken frame for 50 dollars, but I prefer a good one. I wanted to know if it's decent condition and I can trust it, because people told me the rental bikes are all f.... up but I never seen them, so I don't know how to compare.
This one the Fork doen't have scraches he says, and the frame doesn't look very srached too, I need people that know this bikes and have seen the rental bikes so I can have a comparison.
I'm going to see the other one today, the never rented one, I think I'll have to pay the same price but no Dee Max... should I go for it or this one in Whistler
is fine?

people don't trust it because it was a Whistler fleet rental which take 5 normal years abuse in 1 year, not the actual bike.
Stabs are fine solid bikes, it's just a matter of how beat this one is. It looks good in the picture and it's a great price for the spec. Check it out with a fine tooth comb for any frame cracks (take a clean damp tooth brush to any dirty creases at the welds). If you're happy to take the chance on a used non-warrantiable frame; know you'll probably be having to spend a few hundred bucks sooner rather than later on fork and shock servicing and new bearings etc.

The pictures are recent, the bike hasn't been riden since the day he took the pictures, the same day he posted the ad he says.
He told me "i work on bike's i went over everthing. it's all tight nothing wrong with bike at all."
I wanted to hear people oppinions, how does it look like? If I go see it what should I take a closer look at?

Make sure you look over all the parts for cracks or anything that could be a problem. Take the bike for a test ride, shifting through all the gears and using the brakes to make sure the bike is running smoothly.

personally, i would cal whistler to book one of those bikes for the weekend. that way you don't rush into a purchase and you can actually ride the bike on the trails before you buy it to get a feel for whether or not you like that particular style of bike. you might ride it and not like the way the bike feels. if it's a rental your only out a few compared to a couple thousand.
Yeah.. that's a good idea, but 70 bucks is hard... I'g going to see the bike in Vancouver today, it is used too (I'm buying a used bike so I can get something good for my money) but it's never been rented... I'm still trying to decide if I offer the guy the money for it... The bike is the same, never rented and look very good shape, but worst wheels
All I know is that I need to ride Whistler, I'm leaving Canada at April 25th 2006 so I don't think I'm going to get the next biking season.... but 70 bucks is hard man... Anyway, can a 16 year old boy rent the bike? What do I need to do it?

There will be alot of bikes up for sale in whistler for good deals this weekend. Kind of like buying snowboard gear in march/april.
what bad wheels does the never rented bike have? does it have the exact same parts spec as the one pictured? sram? 888? if it has ok wheels, seeing what people do to rental bikes on the bikerx, id go for that one (non renter)

That person who posted the ad does not sound like the type of person who knows his bikes.
Seeing that you can buy the same bike for $1399 (I think), $1900 isn't that great. The old buy low, sell high method. Until you get the bike to a shop to check it over, I wouldn't bother striking any concrete deals.

ya whistler is selling them now for like 1300 if you nuy 1 for that you could probly sell it for that or close to it! by the way when you try to sell the bike in april no one will pay 1900 for it so think of it that way. youll take a bigger loss on the more expensive 1!
That's the other one http://www.pinkbike.com/modules/buysell/?op=view&image=141334 Rims are 321, sweet but not Dee Max...
Now the question.
- Never rented, pretty dure is good condition one with 321
VS.
- Rented, probability of good condition with Dee Max???
AND QUESTION NUMBER 2:
- 1800 on the Never Rented one is good? You people think I'm going to find something better in Whistler this holiday?????

go for the never rented one
it sounds like the guy selling the rental works for Whis. He might be flipping a bike he just bought last week for 1300

agreed. he probably picked one of the nicer ones and paid alot less than 1900 for it. the 321s should be plenty strong unless you are a complete hack. the fact that it has never been rented also makes it more valuable.
The problem is that people told me that the whistler bikes are beat, but I don't know how they are because I've never seen one, so I can't compare this one with the rental ones.... What does it looks like???
Not that the 321 doesn't fit me... but Dee Max is Dee Max... I probabli won't have a chance of getting one so early, since I'm going back to Brazil and they cost like 1250 CAD there....
The other thing is that even if I decide for the Never rented one, I can't be sure if the guy will take my 1800.... as you can see he's asking more, and if he doesn't take it I will probably have only the Whistler guy's bike left, and I want to know if the bike is OK... I mean, what problems can it have? Bearings and pivots, Suspension Internals and Frame fatigue, the other ones I can see that it doesn't look like very abused. So I wanted someone who have seen the abused ones and could have some idea of comparison by looking at the pics.
And if he paid 1300 on it and it's still good for 1800 why not go for it?? That's what I need to know.

I would not buy a park bike, no matter what. I just wouldnt. Im selling my bike, and I would let it go for 1800, and it woulf be in a damn side better condition than a renter. You can do better. I also do not like deemax. I mean I love the look and the "pimpness". But for practicality they are just not the greatest. A 823 has the same profile, but a 36 spoke hole count, so hub replacement is easy, and spoke replacement is easy. If anything happens to a deemax, your pretty much fucked until you order parts in. I dont know about in Brazil, but if deemax wheel sets are more expensive, than parts probably are too.
the only reason it is better is because it hasnt been rented.
This surely put it into a higher place, but I wanted t hear for everyone if they think that the one in Whistler is worthy or not, people that can compare them, because I can't... I don't want to buy this one and see that in Whistler Rental they are the same... And I wanted a comparison between them, because people told me not to buy the rental bikes.... The problem I wanted to decide tomorrow....

in all the years kona has supplied bikes to the WBP there has not been one frame failure , so if the pivots are good , and the component grouppo is all good , i'd pick up the bike in whistler ( deemax ) .
having said that , i don't buy , or commit , to anything that i haven't personally checked out , or had someone i trust to do it for me . 1800 is a good price for that bike .
I will see the bike before buyng, but if I go to whistler without a bike I'll have already made up my mind, so I would only give it up if there is a serius problem like a crack or a broken pivot or something like that....
I always try to put in better words, so let's try again:
The guy guaranteed me that he works with bikes and that he looked everything when he bought and that there're no problems... I alsked him for the frame and pivots etc... but How good is the bike??? How better it is compared to the ones people told me not to buy because they were beat (Whistler Rental Fleet)??? because if it is the same I eighter don't buy or I buy one from the Rental Fleet because it would be the same no?... if it is the same than I surely should go for the one here in Vancouver no?? as people told me "DON'T BUY THE RENTAL BIKES"......

yes, it is a common theme to not buy a rental bike, but that one looks like its been babied, maybe it was one that was just at the back of the rack, and didnt get used that much. id get it checked out by a mech. off these boards, and somebody shouldnt be too hard to find at whistler this weekend.

Whistler is hard on bikes. After a full season of it EVERY day by people who don't give a damn about their rented steed, that's why most people tend to stray away from WBP rental fleet sales. However cheap, most of the bikes have been beat to hell and back. But there are bikes in decent condition, like M@M said, it could've been at the back of the rack or a personal bike for one of the staff and so on.
However, you could possibly get a rented one for $1399, get the unrented one for yourself, then head back to Brazil and sell the WBP rental at a higher price which is actually reasonable for a bike of this caliber since MTB parts and bikes in Brazil are incredibly expensive.
Probably not... Personally, I would go for the not rented 321. Just piece of mind knowing the bike wasn't thrashed to hell before it got all waxed up and put into an ad...

Just because a bike is a rental, doesn't mean its in bad shape. The privately owned one could be much worse. It could've been ridden at Whistler every weekend. ;)

About buyng 2 bikes, no way. it will be already difficut to get into my country again with one without paying 60% tax (yes, that's sixty per cent tax)... It would be very good but no way....
But what all this beating can result in? I'm good about the components like wheels, drivetrain, brakes etc, all of this I can easaly see... the results I think would be dings (he sais that there are no dings) cracks (he sais that there are no cracks, but everyone sais this and not every time is true... he could have even missed a crack somewhere, but I'm not the most competent person to see that too) bad pivots and bad bearings (He sais is all in order, although I have no Idea how to check this, Ii don't think he would guaranty me that there are no problems if they exist in the pivots, i mean, is a more difficult thing to cover) and frame fatigue, which is difficult, not to say sometimes impossible to see...
When you buy a used bike you always take your chances, even with the never rented the guy could have the fork and shock all broken inside and the frame welded and the bearings ovalized and all, but the chances of this things happening are very small.... My point is, you can never be sure, but seeing the pictures and the story and other variables you can see if are REALLY taking your chances on it or if it something small like the exemple I wrote... but I surelly don't want to take my chances on a Whistler Rental Fleet bike that I've never seen for exemple, and that people told me that barely have paint on it.... not the case of any of the 2, but I can't see how sure I can be about the rented one because I never seen the beat bikes everyone talk about....
I could really use the help of a mechanic coming with me to see the bike, but I don't know anyone and I couldn't even say if the guy knows the seller and will tell me that all is OK....

just wanted to throw one more note at this before it goes off the first page .
what some of the mechanics will do is pick out a " pet " bike that they will keep an eye on over the summer . you know , keep it in the back of the rack , see that it is the last to go out , keep the good rubber on it , give it a little extra lovin' , little spit and polish , so that at the end of the summer they know exactly which bike to pick out of the stable at a clearance price , and then pass it on to some guy like xmag who would never be able to afford a bike like that , in that kind of condition , ever . that's what a sharp mechanic does : turns a tidy honest little profit through his own hard work and diligence .
glad it worked out for ya , xmag .

Yes, I saw the bikes in the Rental Fleet, the guy asked me 1500 for the onw he said was the best one, but it was all scrached, fork all scrached and all, the "bomber" plates destroied and the top tube barelly had paint from people's pads rubbing against it... I walked all around the city and saw all the bikes around before calling the guy and meeting him, I'm very pleased with the bike's condition, that's why I thought it would be worthy to pay 300 bucks more for a good one...
I got a little cold because of the rain in Whistler, but I think I'll be OK by the weekend, and I want to ride the North Shore!!!!
