on my way up fromme the this past saturday, we were passed by some one on a 4stroke moto-X bike, doing mach 10 up the road, riding recklesly, this isnt legal is it?
i would imagine that he would have been riding up the gravle road, to ride down a trail?..

Never seen any of them riding on a bike trail - I think they go further up than we would.
As for illegal - yes. However technically so is Mtn biking although perhaps that's been down graded to not sanctioned.
They have ways past the gate - I don't like them but rarely see one. Can't do much about it (perhaps hand them maps to Vedder Mtn?)

Don't be snotty with me. Dirtbikes can't be liscensed and therefore are illegal on roads(including logging roads I would think). I don't think anyone will know the answer to your second question unless they were the dirtbiker or they saw the same guy on a trail.

not much, i dont see what thier need would be to ride on fromme there are many other places that except dirtbikes, and give them places to ride, (vedder, eagle Ridge? i blieve),

You young fella's can locker box to settle your pissing match but the reality of it is that moto's used to run up there for a lot of years in fact.
Long before the plethoria of trails, long before the MTB, long before most of the NSMB demographic was born, long before the onslaught of people moving to Vancouver and making everything crowded and political.
Might even have been a cabin owner up top eh?

there are cabins up there?
it wasnt a bike bieing used for transportation, it was a full on moto bike, he was dressed to the nines too, on a side note, Ned since you seem to know so much about thier existance up there, are thier any trails that they do ride up there?
there are cabins up there and there is a gravel pit. as far as a dirtbiker on the shore is concerned there isnt many other options to ride on the shore.
infact. when I get a dirtbike i'm gonna run it up that road too!

Gotcha.
To the 9's? And here we are thinking billboard sign roadies and armored MTB gladiators are a chuckler. Moto's as funny a marketing sham as freeride.
The rest is stuff I don't discuss here under punishment of being force fed 5lbs of Deed's TG turkey. Sorry hombre...

i love an activity where everyone in the forest around you for a few km can hear you roostin' up the road ... i guess the VPS noises carry almost as far tho.

Like Ned said, dirt bikes have been ripping up that road for a long time. It's pretty much the only place in North Van that you can take a dirt bike. I don't know if it's legal or not but who gives a shit anyway. Let them have fun.
ive seen a guy on a dark green dirtbike going up that road. wasnt dressed to the nines, so i just assumed it was a property owner.

i dont have a problem with the guys fun, but when he is cresting arround the inside of a corner full oppend, and there is a mountian biker coming down the gravle road, pulling over to the side, and maby dropping a gear or two would be nice, but w.e. atleast hees out havin a blast.

yeah but as a mountain biker, you can ride trails where you will see no-one. this is pretty much the only place you can take a dirtbike offroad on the shore. Never mind the fact that dumptrucks that run that road arent exactly silent either.
I saw a guy on a dirtbike a few weeks back, too. But he was riding DOWN the road, so he wasn't riding down any bike trails or anything.

I disagree. Even the trucks don't go fast up/down the road - too rough and too many switches plus they know there are others who use the road (mtn bikers, hikers, dog walkers). If the motobikes go slow up/down the road - fine I'll put up with (but not happily - I like Fromme because it's quiet) them but when they don't I get pissed at them. It's possible, but unlikely a mtn biker might hit another mtn biker or hiker going fast down the road but much more likely a motorcross biker might.
Places like Vedder they don't use the road (almost never) so no issues with mtn bikers and hikers who use different trails and may climb the road. ATVs are a different story there but then the motorcross guys hate the ATVs so I hear.
ATV's are the bain of spark plug culture... Got a few spolied, clueless groms around my little horsey trail barrio who ride 'em on the street like complete tools. They're pushing hard on the gas pedal of the Darwin train... All aboard!

If the guy on the Moto cross was dressed to the NINES..... It was probably the police officer hired to work that area. (What a rough position that is to be up there for the day.)

This thread is funny. A little bit of NIMBY going on here. You know what? I live in the burbs and I can ride a motor bike out of my yard without anyone complaining. A little telling of our different areas eh?

Edit : Not sure why unhappy face is on there, im feeling pretty good!
I was up there the same day with my buddy andrew. And were about 15 minutes from upper oil can when that guy came tearing up the road. He was dressed to kill, all black, even had a black visor (almost like a street bike helmet with a visor! 4 stroken it. He was moving, looked like he was holding nothing back. I waved to be nice but he just opened it up even more!
Saw him coming back down when We were taking a break at top of upper oil can, so he must have just been out for a rip! Not much we can do about those guys though! Dont think he killed anyone so its all good!

whats yer point splinky?
it's not uncommon to see people riding down Mtn Hiway on fromme at decently high speeds, obivously on xc bikes without armor for the most part, normally no helmet either ...
some of them are almost as annoying as the motos ... but you have less warning from them

Correct, was a good ride that day! My first time on Fromme. We were heading to airsupply but andrews rear shock was pooched and i was trying a different shock setting on my bullit which i didnt like! so we took it easy on Upper Oil Can, Expresso, and some sweet trail of Baden Powel that had techy steep rocky chutes!

Thank you. Its exactly the same. Siting from the outside, its pretty easy to see.
Motor bikes riding up the only single bit of off road in North Van where they shouldn't get bitched at, yet they still do. This attitude doesn't exist nearly as much elsewhere as it does in the city. Those damn motorized vehicles are ruining the red-arsed frogs! People opposed should join forces with Monica to ban everything fun on that mountain.
Not In My Back Yard. As simple as it gets.

I have to agree with Synchro and Parsons, Growing ip in a small town things were much more easy going than the city. City people (generalization, I know not all)only seem to care about their own agenda and nobody elses.
Anyone here lived on the Shore long enough to know what Woodward Park was? Hmmm?
thewwkayaker
10-06-2005, 03:37 PM
Actually I didn't say they shouldn't be allowed, but since it's a multiuser road some care should be taken when riding up/down it. I'm suggesting a speed limit would perhaps be useful. It is a road afterall - not a trail - so road rules could be applied here and in NV if the limit is not posted the speed limit is 50km/hr.
When riding uphill I can see well in front of me so someone coming down I'm more likely to see them. If another cyclist hits me from behind on my climb - well fine I'll take that over being hit by a motorcross guy any day :-)
And Wayne - if you and your neighbors want to jump on your pigs and race them down the main dirt road - well that's just the beauty of living in the Stix :-)

Do tell Ned
I got no problem with the dirt bikes. But if they show up in huge numbers and build their own crazy trails in the woods and organize an association and hold trails days, then I might have to employ a double standard LOTI
let em ride. If they are riding Fromme, they must be desperate
<snip> Trust me on that one... I and some of the originals are already most of the way there.

I have a few friends that ride MX bikes. They go fast, they roost,
and they ride in a different area than we do.
Now, there is at least one person that is roosting the lips OFF of
every jump we got. He even roosted a ladder and tore off over 1/2
the rungs.
Hey, as long as they ain't roosting your jumps and ladders, what's the
beef? I don't like the noise either, but the hunters say we're too loud
on our mt bikes here where I live.

about a year ago I was finishing a ride on Fromme when a guy was unloading his brand new KTM. He didn't have it running for 2 minutes when there were residents coming out yelling at him, people driving by him giving the dude shit. He wanted to take it for a quick rip to see what it can do. Now I don't have a problem sharing the access road but the moto's need to show some respect. I have been passed on the road by dudes doing mach one spitting gravel all over the place, even kids rippin without helmets. I can share riding area's, but there has to be a level of respect. Oh and the dude with the KTM wound up loading the bike after being threatened "we are going to call the police..."
