 This thread is so people can post when they ride Ledgeview in Abbotsford. Please put the date, how long you rode, what trails and where you are from. You can put your name too if you want. I will be using this info with Abbotsford council to push for establishing and maintaining legal bike trails on Ledgeview after the development is all done (won't be as much as is there now, but anything we can save will be worth the work!)

I am from Abbotsford, and I rode Ledgeview Thursday, Sept 22nd, 2005. I rode up the Bassano/powerlines side up the not well used climb to the top, then rode down Buttafuco - paperroute and Amy Fisher. Then back up ot the top and down Little Butt to SOB and then home. It was sweet!

I dont have as detailed riding record as Stillgoing...but, from what i can remember:Since moving to the valley (around a year ago) i have hit it at least a dozen times. Usually start right behind the fenced compound(I think that is buttafuco? My trail name knowledge is sketchy. Half and half I go paper route( the gap jumps?) or the trail to the right( the wood work and last 6 footer). Then i either hit amy fisher(big ol log ride), or double back up and go to SOB(washing machine I think) or the trail with the jumps that spits out of the main trail from paper route. I have also ridden two other ways down with trail that runs very close to new housing(with the steep section, and cool ladder drop to the left) or the one that has some good sized drops and gaps( the one with the "Y" drop that splits off at the appex of the structure, that runs along the falls). I have seen many folks who are locals, and some from Aldergrove, Langley, North Van, and even Washington. Some times i push/pedal my big rig, some times i try and climb up with my xc bike, and have even ridden there at night with lights. The climb always kicks my but. I am for participating in keeping all that we can, with reasonable expectations that some may indeed be housed. No doubt that it is an riding oasis right within the city. I bet it will be the first place i hit when i recover.

Rode Tues, Oct 11, to the top then down mixed bag and Amy fisher. Not too muddy out there today! Total time 1 hr.
And on a sidenote, there were some punk kids ripping around there with a Jeep, rather recklessly and driving waaayyy too fast, there's a new way around the entrance at the bottom. Their F150, <cough>hate ford<cough> couldnt make it up tho.
I have been up ledgeveiw 10 times this year.
I rode it yesterday oct.15. there must have been 15 cars parked at the bottom. Saw Gary there. Had with me three expert BMX kids all 9 years old. They all have good mountain bikes. This was there second trip to the top. Last time we did upper paper rout and mixed bag. This time we did Upper and Lower Paper Rout, Spin Cycle and Amy Fisher. The trail was a little wet and covered in leaves. The kids did great and have wicked balance all of them. The maps you put up where great. We are planning to do the sob next time from the tower. It’s a long climb for the kids but they love the ride down.

October 18 - went out by myself for a quick spin - up the powerlines side and down Flintstones. Someone put an arm thick log across the trail near the bottom - very obviously deliberately placed (I removed it). Also, the exit onto the dirt road is a bit treachourous as they have placed a lift of gravel and you now have to cross a small - steep - 8 inch deep trench right at the bottom of the hill - be careful!

October 23, 2005 - went up the usual way - powerlines than the unused climb. Took a different fork and ended up a little lower down on Buttafuco - below the new "Jump or Pump". Hiked/rode the rest of the way to the top and saw that the sign was still there and that tons of people logged their rides!!! :)
Headed down the new "Jump or Pump" section - its looking good! Then did Mixed Bag (4 tries to clear the first log =/ ) followed by Amy Fisher. Took one of the new little drops for the first time..very sweet! Rode back up and saw that the sign near the bottom is still there - although someone took the map :nono: very bad whoever you are - oh well - next time I won't put the trails on it - that way no one will be tempted.
Back up to SOB and that sign is still there too! Its just been shoved into the old washer? :???: Don't know why but people had signed in here too - sweet!
SOB was tons of fun (as ususal). All in all a great ride in the rain!

Rode today Oct 27th, up the main road, did some new spur I'd never seen just below the clearcut that had some fun hits to Berminator and continued down Berm from there. Tacky, not muddy, nice day for a ride. Total time 1.5 hrs.

I rode there in June...hit SOB.
I rode on July 23, we rode SOB, Amy Fisher, SOB again, and finished it off with that really good trail from the top with lots of big gaps. (name?)
I rode there also on September 17. We rode SOB, sessioned the Amy Fisher step downs...think we rode SOB once more and then we did that really good trail fromt he top with lots of big gaps. (name) lol
All in all, I love riding at Ledgeview, I was planning to head up there today but the foul weather scared me off. It kind of sucks when it's wet there. It'd be a shame for them to tear the mountain down and replace it with a bunch of houses that could go in plenty of other spots.
Long Live Ledgeview:woot:

Well, I started off the ride with lots of ambition and a little bit of hang-over. Turns out the hang-over won! I was going to climb up the Vicarro road and then Big-Rock trail to the top and ride the "New Trail" and SOB, but by 8:35 I decided that wherever I was by 9:00 am was gonna be the top for today!
I actually made it all the way to the Flintstones/Hidden Valley trail head and ended up taking an easy slow run down Hidden Valley. Still lots of leaves on the trail - so its still a little slick - makes everyting a little sketchy! Took a diifferent turn at one point and ended up on a really nice steep straight decent beside the fenceline. Ended up doing a couple of the big table tops near the powerlines and then headed for home.
I went up hidden valley yesterday with my 9 year old and his buddy. We got a little lost and went past the fence at the top, but found our way to Upper Buttafuocoo after going over the fence and through a clearing. I think we should have turned right at the narrow opening in the wooden fence near the top. After finding the right trail and stopping at the lookout we road the rest of buttafuocoo, paper-route and the SOB. the trail was wet and slippery. It was the first time on the SOB for the little guys. They did good if a little tentative in places, and had a good time. I liked Hidden Valley for the clime up, wide and smooth and quiet.

hmmm - you probably rode up "vicarro" to the fence you didn't go right at ("the narrow opening") if you were on a wide fire-road - the start of both Flintstones and Hidden Valley is opposite from the narrow opening through the trees on a single-track you might not notice if you didn't have it pointed out to you. At the narrow opening - if you keep on the road and stay right you will come to a ladder type structure over a fence followed by a windy bit of single-track through some ferny woods - then a clearing and the trail is on the right of the clearing all the way to the top (more or less). Thanks for logging your ride!

Nov 14, Rode Little Buttafuco and Hidden Valley today. There is a fairly large tree that has broken on Butt and Hidden Valley is very slick. It was my first time riding Hidden Valley and I can see how it got its name, with all the leafs it was tough at times to see if I was on the trail or not. Whats with the walk way over the barb wire in the one part, that sure breaks the flow, but it was still fun and I look forward to trYing it under better conditions. BE NICE TO RIP IT!
The new trail (14) looked really wet so I didn't ride it, the gap jump at the start has a couple inches of mud in front of it so watch yourself if your going to hit it!!!
Nice to see the sun out again, I hope things dry up a bit because even my Big Betty is sliding all over. lol.

Saturday, November 19, 2005: Rode "the new trail" and SOB with a schoolmate. I'm impressed by the new trail. The big gap is excellent, but like some others mentioned in the other thread, it is advisable to put in a safety. The step up at the beginning needs some drainage right before the kicker. Hopefully Ledgeview is still around by next summer.

Rode yesterday, monday, sweet conditions. Hit paper route/butafuco, i cant remember the names. I took a right at the top anyway. On the way down I saw a pretty big rock drop to a fresh berm that I had never seen before. Looked pretty mint actually.
Total ride time about 1.5 hrs, sweet sunny conditions, the only mud was on the road on the way up.

Rode to the top from the back-way - legs felt like lead so I actually walked some of the steeper switch-backs!?!? Haven't done that since March!!!!!:???: Got up there around 8:30 and took in the view - most of Abby was covered in fog but the sun was up and shining - it was awesome - and the whole mountain to myself!
Took off on Paperroute - started with the steep rock roll (this looks like the more popular entrance - could use some grading as it is getting RUTTED) - and then went down the usual way - figured out where the new ladder drop is - will have to hit it next time. Cut over on the SOB option and picked up the map I had there - it was toast too - don't worry I have a more permanent option in mind for on the hill info...
SOB was wicked - by 2 pm today the whole mountain will be set-up really nice - dry but tacky and VERY fast. And to top it all off - there's this one corner on SOB that's been throwing me lately - after you drop down by the ravine - its a hard left between two trees - over a bunch of roots and then another hard left kinda washed out berm to a hard right berm to a table top and then you get spit out near the old Berminator ladder bridge (after a coupke more corners). Well - for whatever reason I haven't cleared this corner for a while (the first hard left between the trees), but today I just PINNED it!:D What a sweet ride!!!!!!

Nov 23. Was kinda bummed out that nobody hooked up to ride today but that soon wore off after the sun hit me and the fog cleared.
Rode Da Plow, Berminator and Son of Berminator. Conditions were excellent and for the first time ever I almost felt like the bike and me became one. For me it doesn't get any better I was hooked up and even poor judgements made no difference. Didn't do the big gaps on Da Plow but everything else and I gotta tell the builder from a beginner/intermidate riders stand point you guys did a absolutely awesome job. That trail is so flowy and fun!!:D
After that I came back to Mission and ran Bear Moutain DH course. It was also in excellent condition and I could feel the tires biting in.. sure made cornering alot more fun than sliding all over the place. Hit six and a half minutes and for me that is a best. I know thats slow for you hot shots but for me that was ripping it.
Than I decided I would go to Golden Ears and run Switchback, probably a mistake seeing that my legs were already like rubber but it was just so nice of a day I went for it. Once again had the whole mountain to myself and gave her down the hill as best I could with rubber band for legs, lol.
For the first time in my life I am so tired from riding that even if ther wife wants sex I am going to pass. :D Well ok, maybe not, but you get the point!!
Nov 26
Headed out from Surrey...up the golf course access road to Lower Butt/Jump or Pump, Paper Route, Spin Cycle, bailed back out to the access road, up to Da Plow, back up for Da Plow again, Berminator, Son of Berminator, back up Vicarro, up whatever the trail that crosses the barbed wire is, around the tree farm, Da Plow for a third time, then Berminator, Son of Berminator, and the road ride back to the golf course.

Nov 28 Rode Da Plow, Berminator and SOB. Trails were frozen solid.
Made for a interesting ride, most of the hard frost helped as the older bike treads marks made for good traction in the corners but a few roots and ice patches sure had me getting sketchy a few times.

Snow snow snow - 4-6" of fluffy stuff at the top. Ended up walking a lot more of the climb up then I usually do. Found the top of Da Plow - I am again impressed by this trail - some nice old school single track then a steep drop-in into the woods and some godd hits that almost anyone would feel comfortable hitting. Well done! Unfortunately, there was snow all over it today - and all the way down Berminator until it changes to SOB! Made for an intersting go of things!! OK - lets add to this - the whole goal of this thread is to get an idea of how many people ride Ledgeview and how often so we can have some ammo when discussing legal trails with the City of Abbotsford.
With that in mind, please try and add how many people you went with AND how many people you SEE on the trails.
I went by myself yesterday, but saw 5 other riders.

Dec 17 and 18th. Rode all over, one day with my older son and a friend of mine, the other day with both my sons and the same friend.
Conditions were beyond excellent. I have never seen so many riders aand hikers on the hill at once. Everywhere I rode, I saw groups of people. It was almost crowded up there.
Where will we all ride when it's gone.....? I know: let's hang out at 7-11 instead.
I'm so bad with names. I recognized so many, but who...? Subplop recognized me (without ever meeting me before! - Hi). Stopped and talked to the father/son Pedal Power team - keep up the good work. I rode the upper section of DaPlow, trying both entrance variations. Next time, I'll try the left branch that spits you out onto the road above the original DaPlow entrance.
Stopped and sat within the gap on one of the Paperroute jumps while some riders flew over us and other filmed it. Post it up!!
Didn't carry the GPS, so I can't add the new section to the map. Seems I'll just have to go riding again. sigh - work, work, work
Tom - We were just loading up after our ride when we saw you bomb on by. I guess you were just heading to Watcom to start your ride. I was tempted to chase you down and go for another lap - next time.
I tell ya - one guy shouldn't be allowed that much fun. Best part: my xmas shopping is done, so no guilt factor.

Met 5 hikers (2+2+1), a couple of 14-15 year olds (p2 and red/white striped rim), a group of about 6, another pair hitting up the DaPlow entrance jump (good save, buddy!) and a couple more riders, I think. Went out for an early lunch ride with BRACE. Headed up the normal way and, figuring Da Plow and SOB would be way too wet, headed down Paper-route to a trail I call "Old School" (Stillgoing's map says its Lower Butt), back onto Paper Route, and then finished up on Amy Fisher. The top half of the mountain was pretty sweet, but once we hit the road and Amy Fisher it was slick and greasy!
There were two of us, and we saw two other guys doing Da Plow and SOB, and at least 4 people walking up the road.

Well - I said I was going at 6:30 or 7 - actually headed up at 4:30. Got to the top (just of Flintstones) around 5:30 and it was getting DARK. Right now, my light is mounted on my handlebars - so on a trail like Flintstones, it wasn't always pointed down the trail! I think I will be moving it to my helmet!!!
I saw about 6 people on bikes in and around the road gaps and the waterfall gap near the powerlines, two joggers, two cows and one deer.
I have to admit - this was my first night ride in years, and the first one ever with a decent light - it was SWEET - and a little intimidating!

Feb 1. Rode Da Plow and SOB with my son who wants me to pass on to the trail builders that he thinks Da Plow is awesome. Its was his first good rip since his injuries and it was sure nice to see him having such a good time again.
The new line with the three jumps before the plus 20 footer is really nice. I think I will try and get up the courage to hit the first two smaller ones myself next time.
My son hit them all blind which is something he doesn't usually do on his first run on a trail but he was to stoked to eye them first, rear tire cased the last one on the new line as he had no idea it was that big of a gap but no crash so all was good.
A huge thank you to everyone that is working on the trails at Ledgeview, you are doing a great job and we sure appreciate the effort.

Took my dad out to Ledgeview for some REAL mountain biking, not lift-access stuff. Plan was to hike up to Speedway then ride down and see if he wanted to go again...him being a 55 year old office worker was tired by the time we got to the trail, so after inching our way down Speedway/LeBiteMe he waited in the Jeep while I went to play up on the hill for an hour and a half.
Hiked up to the top in THIRTY THREE MINUTES. Anyone beat that?
Saw a bunch of hiking couples and families on the way up but only 3 bikers...sat at the top for 2 minutes or so just listening to the absolute sound of silence. Then at 2:00 I slapped the full face on and just PINNED it down Paper Route...I even caught myself thinking out loud..."wow, this is awesome". Saw some guy and his gf or wife hitting the first jump and stopped to ride with them, hit the bigger gaps at the end and then they went down SOB and I hiked up to Da Plow. Checked out the new dirt jump line to 15 footer to the big jumps. The new gap is huge!
Funny thing about that new 4-pack or whatever you want to call it:
There were these 2 other guys and one said "Don't pedal after the entrance hip, you'll make it fine." I didn't believe him and pedaled a bit, totally overshot and bottmed out. Then I tried again but pedaled once or twice after, still overshot. Then I tried a 3rd time, just coasted...STILL overshot! I tried a 4th time, coasting and using brakes to the point of rediculousness and alas, I still overshot...
At this point I was running out of time so I watched one guy hit the 20-25 foot gap and then used my excess speed to hit that as well...scared the crap out of myself...Went WAY too fast and landed flat on my back wheel...You don't need as much speed as you think for that jump! I probably could have made the 30-35 foot gap with that amount of speed. Anyway after that I bombed it down the access road cause I only had 10 minutes left, this is when I saw all the mountain bikers...they gave me some funny looks I'd imagine. Hit Amy Fisher on the way down and then went home.
Don't know how many people I saw but probably like 30-40. It was busy.

I saw that the third gap jump on SOB has been damaged and was wondering if maybe it should be flagged or something? Although I guess the logs laying beside it should be fair warning? It can still be hit but it looks like its longer and the jump appears lower as some logs and dirt are knocked out.

Peachy,
the ledgeview trails are all different riding, with a bias towards the mid range rider.
The network that is growing ,all for the better.
XC check out the newly reopened RegalEscape, if you like the xc longer trail rides.
To get to RegalE go to top(tower) down to the lookout head head N down to MixedBag junction ,head N. down a ways till you see a broken trimmer Yellow handle.
Turn right and go down, this part ahead may have to be redone as it looks tooo steep, but walk if you must.
quickly this turns down and away you go ,xc to be sure with a couple of small hits till you come out onto the East part of the mtn,(you are below Flintstones) dirt road head S. till you enter the subdivisions and look for the power lines ,head back W.under the lines till you return to the Ledgeview trails.
This trail is longer and makes flintstones look small, great views and sites.
lots of riders should be out there today sunday, hook up with someone ,thats best.

We went up to the tower and then Paper Route, back up to Da Plow, LeBite Me, and then back up to Amy Fischer today. Jesse and crew were training the 45 footer, what a sight that was. There must have been 20 people standing around watching. That is huge. There was probably 20 to 25 cars at the bottom when we left. Then we headed to the outdoor BMX track then got a quick run in at the Woodlot on the way home. What a great day.

Sat rode Ledgeview, finished off on Lost Oakley .
Sun rode big Sumas (too much snow, had to push my bike on road)after entering the canopy it was stellar on TimeKiller) did one run .
finished the day at Lost Oakley putting the end off the bridge, and making a stepup kicker onto the Dog's breakfast ,looking at also making this into a wal ride/stepup landing combo. If it works it should be fun.
Ledgeview
counted over twenty cars at top parking lot ,most I have ever seen.
This was afternoon,I know lots of riders went out in the early morning.

Went up ledgeveiw yesterday morning early (8:30am) in a group of seven including three kids from the BMX club. First time for one 12 year old girl on a mountain trail. All the kids did great. We rode Buttafuoco from the top then Mixed Bag to Amy Fisher. Conditions where great. We where not the first people on the mountain two cars there when we arrived. Saw about eight riders including two x country bikers (man and woman) with a broken chain. Lent them my chain breaker and got them going again. Great ride can’t wait to go back.

Rode ledgeview for the first time last thursday (I just discovered this thread). trails there are sick, they were a little wet then but still super fun. I rode paperroute, Da Plow, Berminator and Son of Berminator. Da plow has some nice jumps, the 35 footer after the six pack is a good one. That 50 footer at the very end is huge, I doubt I'll hit that one unless I was following someone who has hit it before. Ledgeview was a blast I will definately return soon...

Well - I started this thread as a tool to try and gauge how many people were riding Ledgeview. I want to thank everyone who has posted here. But, for the forseeable future, I won't be riding Ledgview anymore. I had always believed (based on discussions with other bikers) that the land-owners didn't mind us up there. However, as was made very clear to me at the recent public hearing on the McKee Peak Planning Study, at least two of the land-owners DO NOT WANT US ON THEIR LAND. So, I encourage everyone to find somewhere else to ride for the next little while so the dust can settle from the guy who broke his leg, and so we can have some time to negotiate a deal.
Right now this is not official FVMBA policy - just my opinion. I am not sure the FVMBA will have an official policy on this - it is private land afterall, and we are in no position to dictate the use of private land. I just want to make sure people know that in the past we were welcome (not enthusiastically, but grudgingly) on the mountain - but right now we aren't. In reality, the FVMBA can't say whether the trails are opened or closed, becasue it is PRIVATE LAND. It is up to the landowners to agree to let people up there, and right now they don't want us there. So, you can keep going up, but I want everyone to understand that they will be tresspassing, and making the land-owners even madder, which could lead to there NEVER being a deal to ride there permanently. Try and think about it that way, give up a couple of months now, and you get to ride Ledgeview for the rest of your life. Be selfish, say basically "Fuck you landowners", keep riding, and potentially screw it up forever. Your call.
We won't be posting any signs on the mountain, or posting an official trail closure at this time because, again, its private land. We have to take the high road here, or we will lose all credibility, and no local politicians will ever deal with us seriously. Like I have always thought, anything worthwhile takes some hard work and sacrifice.
I'm with you on this one. I won't be riding there.
*edit* about two months after this post I started riding it again

what a sad time for those who love the area.
low impact trails with sweet winding singletrack.
So close to the city,a place where we could take our kids and friends for a one hour ride or more so easily.
Sitting on the cliffs, packing whatever garbage we see out.
Owners used to hate 4wheelers,motocycles,now mtbers have a black look .
Things are changing,
last weekend seen on daplow red 4wheel drive pickup of one of the stuntbuilders, working on a clear cut landing.
chainsawed trees in front by the huge gouges,it used to be quite scenic there. The biggest difference lately is some just don't care, they will do whatever they want.
Lets hope the owners can be convinced that mtn bike trails have a place on ledgeview for now,(it will get developed but this could be years from now)
that we can with a little help from them , be viewed as a positive.

I will continue to ride at Ledgeview for the following reasons:
1) Ledgeview is owned by more than just 2 owners. Just because 2 landowners reamed you out for riding on their land doesn't mean they ALL hate us. Instead, we have to find out who our allies are and work with them to strengthen the bonds, and at the same time try to resolve our differences with the anti-MTB landowners
2) The land is going to be completely RAPED in a matter of time anyway; that is, it is only a matter of time before the forest is becomes a clear cut, buildings are erected, and our beautiful, winding single track descents (and ascents too if you're really into that sort of thing) will become mere bike paths. You may as well enjoy it while you can!:)
That said, ENJOY IT RESPONSIBLY! In my opinion that 45 foot gap should be totally abolished! There is nothing but bad publicity that can come out of a jump of that stature/nature. Just enjoy the trails, if you want to go big head up to RGC or some other mountain that's not in danger of getting shut down! Like someone else on these boards said, please treat all the people you see courteosly, the same goes for the trails.
Now for the "ride log"
Thursday, April 6
6 of us today. Hiked up to Amy Fisher and got warmed up on the step downs. I almost died on the big one...:nono: Then we hiked up to the top and rode Paper Route to Spin Cycle to Amy Fisher. I've never ridden Spin Cycle before but it is a really nice, winding, smooth trail! Paper Route was rad-tacular as usual. So from the bridge at the end of Amy Fisher (didn't bother riding the lame part at the bottom) we hiked up to Da Plow and rode that trail, took it easy, no jumpage or stuntage. From DP we went to SOB and crossed over to Speedway/LeBiteMe. That rock-ride thing is pretty interesting.
It was an awesome day though! Tons of broken bikes and lots of fun crashes:
-Alex lost 3 of his 4 chainring bolts after bonking over a fallen tree on Spin Cycle
-Shawn's bottom bracket was so loose that his cranks moved an inch either way
-Curtis and Ian both pinch-flatted their rear tires on THE SAME ROCK on Lower LeBite Me! It's on the part after the turn-off to go to the double-drop, teeter, and wood berm...we missed that turn so we went down the old way where the little jumps used to be...there was a rock sticking up and they both hit it and flatted instantly! :swearing:
-Shawn slid out sideways on the jump on Paper Route right before the Spin Cycle turnoff
-Curtis ate it in "the tree garden" on LeBiteMe...clipped one of his bars and went down good:007:
Ahhh yes...a good ride it was.
Oh yeah...I forgot to say who I saw.
10-20 bikers
No hikers...it was a week day, I guess that's why

Did a quick overlay of the owner map onto the trail map.
main Daplow starts on Voth land, and ends up on Kenny. The big gapper is so close to the boundry, I can't be sure whose land it's on.
Voth owns just daplow and the access road next to Daplow and the meadow/treefarm above it.
Kenny has a bigger chunk; in fact a couple of disconnected pieces. He's got the bottom of Daplow, about from where the gapper is, Berminator to about the the bomb hole ( don't know what else to call it), and the new Berminator/Speedway connector, as well as the top section of Speedway and across the 4x4 track to part of Spincycle and even the lower, gap sction of Paper route from about the last Y that is the choice between doing spin cycle, or the last stretch of Paperroute (this chunk sometimes called DH bypass).
The waterfall gap is Vicarro Ranch. all the bottom of SOB and most of Lebiteme ( except the lowest in the ravine) is Hillwood Ventures.
The upper chunk, including upper butt, little but, 1/2 of Mixed bag, Milk toast etc is AcmeLand Development. The last 1/2 of mixed bag, and lower butt is Stan Roberto Steamship Co. (?!)
So - there's alot of names in the hat. The most vocal owners own the most commonly ridden stretches. And I think that says something.

Wow, I didn't know about the landowners being upset so much until now, right after I get back from a ride.
May 8, was really nice. A few rare mud puddles here and there, but most of the trails are mint. Rode Da Plow and SOB. Great construction, and in my opinion, that 45 footer is fine. Sure it's big, but it looks like good construction and people need to use their own discretion whether or not to hit it. I mean, if we're saying that a 45 footer is too big, then why isn't the 35 footer too big? Then why isn't the 25 footer too big? Then why isn't the 15 footer...
Anyway, now being informed of the situation with the owners, I think I'll ride Lost Oakleys tomorrow, and maybe until I can find out where we are with the landowners. (They don't own LO, do they?)

Most trails are on public land. Both the examples you mention are managed woodlots. I think, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, that it is Crown land, and whomever manages the woodlot has some sort of license arrangement with the government to log it. The woodlot manager (Sumas is a woodlot too) has somewhat of a verbal agreement or arrangement with trail builders and associations such as the FVMBA. They (riders) work with the woodlot manager. That is a bit different than Ledgeview, where a private entity (be it a person or company) owns a chunk of land, with the sole purpose of selling or developing the land, and has quite bluntly said we are not welcome to ride on their property.
FYI, this month I moved just minutes away from Ledgeview, and I'm still not riding it. It's killing me, but I'm not doing it. There's tons of other great riding out here.

I guess the only other question I have would be: Is it never ok to ride at Ledgeview? Would it be fine if me and my friends only rode there like once every two months or something?....I guess the obvious answer is "no" but I'm just hoping against hope here...:nolove:

Hey, it's not up to me or anyone else to tell you what you can and can't do. That's a decision only you can make. The FVMBA has asked riders to stay away from Ledgeview to take the heat off a bit while they try to work something out. That being said, I know people who are riding there occasionally, and I don't hold it against them.
It sucks that something as fun as mountain biking has to be mired down in politics, but that's life these days. A big thank you goes out to the guys who are volunteering and working behind the scenes on this matter.

So, what should show up in the FVMBA's mailbox today? An e-mail from a member who says he was pulled over by police as he parked to ride the Ledgeview trails. Aledgedly he was told that the land-owners have complained enough, and the now want tickets handed out to anyone tresspassing on their land!!!:stupid: (good use of our police and tax dollars!)
So - what can we do now? Well, stay away for starters (like I have been trying to tell you all along). This only proves how unwelcome everyone is.
Second - e-mail the Abby mayor and council: http://www.abbotsford.ca/Sites/4/templates/Page53.aspx (just go to the appropriate link). Be respectful and explain your views.
Third - I will be meeting with Councillor Lynne Harris and City Staff next Wednesday at Ledgeview so that I can plead the case of all rec users (including MTBers) and explain the issues. I am not sure any land-owners will be involved.
Finally - sign up for the FVMBA!! We need to show our numbers!!!

OK - so I met with Councillor Harris, Gary Guthrie, the City Manager (the senior non-elected official at the City of Abbotsford) and Ron Hintche - Seniot Planner with the City.
We walked up to SOB from one of the new streets - then up Hidden Valley, then out to the bluffs for a look then up Big Rock to the top. On the way back down, I showed them Da Plow (and the Gap jump the guy broke his leg on) and then we walked down the road to the bottom. The whole meeting/discussions were very positive. Lynne kept exclaiming "This is "Sport-town" Canada!?!" and even suggested a race be held on the mountain to bring people in!!!
The following actions will be taken:
1. The City will take the Occupiers Liability act and the MOU the FVMBA has drafted to their soliciter for a legal opinion - they will also contact North Van and Mission to see how they are handling things re: MTB.
2. The City will forward the letters I prepared to each land-owner. The City will then set-up a meeting between us (the FVMBA) and the land-owners to strike a deal so people can continue to use the area.
3. As the planning process moves forward - MTB'ers a (and all Rec users) will be much more included in the development plan!!
We also discussed trail signage, "trail management" (i.e. big nasty stunts will come down), garbage pick-ups etc (all the stuff we do normally). Through the course of our walk, it became apparrent that only Mr. Kenny is the real problem - all the other land-owners could basically care less.
Gary Guthrie asked about us setting up a "pass" system, and then passing on a token amount of money to the land-owners. While this is fraught with difficulties, I didn't dismiss it. However, I think once they read the Act, it won't be an issue.
SOB is mainly contained in park-land!!! So - it should be able to remain!!
Flintstones will be mainly in parkland - so it too should remain! This trail is also rideable without crossing Voth's or Kenny's land (if you go up the Vicarro side)! YAY!!!
All in all - things are looking up for Ledgeview!:D

Wow - I just reviewed this thread, and the last time I rode Ledgeview was March 12th!!!!
So - after the meeting I had with Councillor Harris and the other two City staffers, I concluded that riding Flintstones, Hidden Valley and the Vicarro side of things was OK as you can do so and stay completely off of Al Kenny and John Voth's land (well - mostly - keep reading). So - that is what I did tonight. It was SWEET!:)
Hidden valley is very over-grown - at least the bottom half - might be good for a trail day. The top half leads into the other route down SOB - you know, the other side of the creek - used to have one drop and not much else - well it has been seriously upgraded. There are some really nice stunts and its very flowy (and its already in park-land! SWEETER!).
After Hidden Valley, I rode back up and did Flintstones to Autobahn. Sweet XC singletrack goodness. However - it is very dry and my front wheel washed out a few times. I will defintately be hitting these trails up a lot in the near future.
Are there other rides you can do and still stay of Kenny and Voth's land? Well, unless you ride up Mixed Bag and then back down - or up Vicarro - cut over and down the bottom of SOB - all other trails and the main climb cross Kenny and Voth's land. So - no dice. (look at this map if you don't believe me...)http://photos.nsmb.com/showimage.php?i=9407&c=11 Flintstones actually crosses Kenny's land, but only after you are below the cliffs - not an area any land owner's visit - nor one they will ever be allowed to develop. So I will allow myself this one small sin!

Well - similar ride to last time. Out the door at 7 am, up the Vicarro climb to Flintstones and then down that trail. Tried the original exit for the first time in probably a year. It had been so long, I thought I was on a new trail going the wrong way!!! There is one newish feature - a little drop between two trees - fun! I also saw a third exit off of the original line - I will have to try it out tomorrow.
I went up Vicarro and rode Flinstones on Wednesday night...while coming back up to Whatcom road, I heard a very loud vehicle doing burnouts. When I got to the road, there were 2 younger guys sitting on their bikes. Looked like they were waiting for someone to retrieve a shuttle vehicle from the golf course. As lame as shuttling from Whatcom to the golf course is (think shuttling SFU but even lamer), if it was mountain bikers doing donuts (there were tire marks everywhere) that would be even lamer. We definitely do not need to be pissing off residents as well.
Saw some doofus trying to get a quad around the second gate this evening. I was pedalling up extremely slowly and did not hear or see him so I assume he didn't make it. I didn't bother trying to say anything to him, since technically we're not supposed to be there either.
Also, If you saw the front page story of Sunday's province, about the illegal harvesting of maple trees...I think I saw evidence of this on Regal Escape. I don't know anything about types of trees, but there were definitely large trees cut down, with blocks of wood still lying on the ground.
If you know the trail...and I suspect most people don't, because it was extremely overgrown, it was a little before you shoot out onto some old doubletrack, above where the newest development is starting.
I'm not sure exactly what to do about this, since technically I was tresspassing on private property in the first place.

The road has been there since the Abbotsford Airport was built and it has been there long before the current land owners, although it is probably a good idea to keep motorized vehicles off it; same could be said for the road up Sumas Mountain.
Being on the road is one thing, tearing up a hill trying to get around a locked gate is another.

The quads have made a fairly easy way around the 2nd gate now, so be carefull.
Rumour has it the map has been updated with Autobahn, Construction Speed Zone (for want of a better name), RGC Dirt jumps (finally!), Lebiteme exit with wallride and Waterfall gap upper access. If ever an agreement is made for legitimate access, perhaps we'll see it freely available.
Note: Skinny, short ladder just past the log on Amyfisher is toast. Someone's been re-working all the little 'poppers' on Berminator - it's really taken the flow out of the trail and will be fixed.
That ladder was fine a week ago...I'd bet the dirtbike tire tracks on Amy Fisher have something to do with it.

So - on Thursday we (the FVMBA) had another meeting with the City of Abbotsford re: Ledgeview and MTB. Present were myself, Gary Harder (FVMBA President), Michael McAllister (the City's Lawyer), Gary Guthrie (the City Manager), Don Luymes (Manager of Community Planning - also the guy who is doing ALL of the develpment planning for McKee Peak/Ledgeview), Ron Myers - Parks Planner/Manager and Lynne Harris - Councillor. The big topic of discussion was the risk supporting a MTB facility puts on the city and how it can be mitigated. Michael went through his points, and what the city will have to do to keep their insurers happy. Basically, the following:
1. Clear signage on all trails - including difficulty rating.
2. Regular inspections of trails - this will be done with the assistance of the FVMBA.
3. "Safetying" of trails - ya, some stunts will have to go.
4. Mandatory helmet rules (I've only ever seen 2 guys with no helmets on Ledgeview)
We also discussed getting the City involved with helping us get a deal with the landowners on Ledgeview - no decision to intervene directly was made, but they are going to help us out a little. Unfortunately, given the delicate situation, there isn't much they can do (and we aren't in too big a position to ask as it is all private land).
Finally - given that some of the trails are already on City land - they are going to be "taken over". What does that mean? Well, for one, hopefully some $$ for maintenance. Signs will appear on the lower sections of SOB and LeBiteme - and Lost Oakleys and Soft Taco will also be signed. These trails will also be inspected and "safetyed". Don't worry - they will still be challenging - the biggest thing we will have to provide is "go arounds" at all stunts - and any bridging that sucks will have to be replaced.
So - things are looking up for MTB in Abby - and the City is gonna help out!!! (we even talked about jump/skills parks - so keep your eyes open!)

Technically, it's always been private property. We've never really been allowed to ride there. It's only in the last little while that one of the land owners has gotten vocal in his opposition to our presence there.
If you're going to ride there, just try to minimize your impact. Be extremely courteous to every person you see. You never know who is a landowner. Try to climb the back way (it doesn't cross his property). At the very least, don't park in the "main" parking area on McKee. Park by the SOB exit, or the golf course overflow lot. That way if someone who doesn't want us there drives by, it's one less "tresspasser" they know about. When you see a bunch of cars parked there, most with bike racks, it's pretty obvious what they're doing.

What back way?
What back way?
Do you know how to get to the powerlines from the SOB exit?
After you go through the steel gate, instead of going right and down, head left and up.
PM me and I would be happy to show you sometime.

yep...one handed typing i make the post as short as possible...
the back way is kind of hard to give directions for, easier to show someone in person.

Headed up the back way and felt like my legs were full of lead! About half way up I cut over to Hidden Valley and ripped back down. A nice early morning ride - saw no one up there...

Just wanted to bring this post back to life. Signs should be appearing on some of the trails on Ledgeview this summer - City of Abbostford signs! Keep your eyes open!:rocker:
On Sunday December 10 I saw a coyote in the meadow on Hidden Valley. Where there is one, there are usually more, so keep an eye on your four-legged riding buddies!

Has anyone been up there after the windstorms? I'm thinking about going Saturday but don't want to spend half the time stopping to lift my bike over logs.

I Don't have an accurate log of all my rides , but I ride Ledgview, Oakleys
and Taco a couple times a week through the dry seasons and once a week
in the wet seasons.....
NOTE: If anyone hasn't ridden the Lost Oakleys or The Soft Taco for awhile .
They are both undergoing a lot of work and are going to be super sweet.....

Went for a ride there tonight. Trails are mostly clear, but super muddy and slippery.

OK - here's an update. A few of us FVMBA types were up on the hill this Saturday showing Brad Snelling from the City Parks and Rec Department the sections of SOB and LeBiteme that are already within City owned park land. We figured out a part of SOB that will need to be re-cut (to stay in the park) and also a stunt that has to go (to be rebuilt later - the big stump drop on SOB). So - once this small amount of work is done - trail signs will go up!:woot: There is hope for Abbotsford after all!!!!!
Even more of SOB than I thought may already be in park land - I will be meeting further with City staff to sort this out.
Look for a "grand opening" announcment/event sometime in June.
Also - we ran into about 7 people riding the trails. Its still busy up there - so post your rides.

On Saturday after the walk-through, we hit Paper route - Lebite me - Lost Oakleys. There were 7 of us plus dogs. We saw 3 guys at the top.

damn, i have been forgettin to update this. Feb 2/07: buttafuco, berminator, lebiteme. good, not too mudy. just me, saw 3 others.
Feb12/07 did a night ride/half shuttle to accomodate battery burn times:rode up from top of lebite me. up berminator(or speed way i am not possotive on this at night) peddaled up till da plow entrance, back down road, right at the washing machine, (speedway i think, or spin cycle)down past the old wood stuff into the housing). back up the road(head lamp only needed) to lebite me, donw till lost oaklys, and to the other truck in old claybourne. See no one else riding and a bit mucky.
Feb 16: Rode da plow, le bite me. Ran out of day light for any thing else. there was a group of about 5 headin up as i entered the jump section of da plow. Kinda slick, had to check ur speed big time after gaps or drops, and i dont do the big ones.

feb 17: rode paper route, berminator, lebite me. Still little mucky, but gettin better. Saw around 5 or so other guys riding da plow, talked to one other guy at the bottom, and saw 2 dudes with chain saw and tools on their way down. Good day, and i rode a little better. Oh, and props to the builders who built the new step up drop that u can see from the road. It looks solid and well thought out. Did not have the nuts to hit it with only a few rides under my belt, but looks like it will be mint.

In my opinion, a one-hit wonder on private property where the landowner has made it publicly known that mountain bikers are not welcome on his land that is visible from the road is not well thought out at all. It's that type of stuff, as well as the stuff being built coming off Da Plow that is causing all the "political" problems on Ledgeview. If anybody is not sure what these problems are that I am referring to, go to page 9 of this thread (post #126).

I was speaking specificly of how it was constructed, not being aware that where it is has some issue with the land owner. I am not prevy to excact details on what is, or isnt a cool area to build here, or ride here. i am assuming by your opinion that u dont ride da plow, or any other trail that you KNOW to be on private land here. Including the road up. I have said this before, unless u build on your own land, you risk imposing some thing on some one esle who may not appreciate, or condon your actions by building or riding there. Including crown land. Off course your entitled to your opinion, every bit as much as I am.

Sorry if my post caused any offense, it certainly was not intended. I think you've misunderstood me. I've got no problem with riding there. I don't necessarily have a problem with building there (Ledgeview in general) as long as it is done responsibly. I helped out a bit with the reroute on Lebite me a while back for example. (It doesn't really matter, but that section of trail is on City of Abbotsford parkland).
My point was, that building a one-hit wonder, in which live trees may have been cut down for it's construction, in plain view, adds more "fuel to the fire" so to speak. That could have easily been built somewhere less accessible and the masses (including land owners) would have been none the wiser.
Also, some of the new trail building I have seen up there is not sustainable. It is being built as quickly as possible, with little or no regard for the consequences.
There is a lot of information on this BB about Ledgeview and the issues associated with it. Maybe we can discuss it further over a bike ride sometime?

I totaly agree in not adding any "fuel to fire" with regards to unresponsible building, be it where, or how good/shity it is constructed. I understand there is a small group putting in a lot of work (regowa, yourself, stillgoing, Gary H, lotss i am not aware of) in keeping in the good books with the owners and the city. That is our best hope in keeping riding available in the Ledgview area in the future. Thats kind of my understanding of this ride log: to gather some numbers in support to how many folks ride up there and to point out to the city that it may be worth their time to help keep riding up there sustainable. My intentions were not to start any debates on responsible building there, mostly because i dont have the knowledge to form a valid opinion. Only from walking by the stunt and checking it out, did i percieve it to be a fun looking, solid built piece of work. I was not aware of tree removal, or its sensetive location. All that being said, i better get my balls back and give the stunt a whirl, because its days could be numbered. I think we are generally on the same page here. We can ride any time our schedules match.
My post wasn't really directed at you, Onepunch, more at the state of things in general. It's a jungle up there.
Likely all that will remain will be trails that are on city park land (Lebite me from the tile gap down and the lower part of SOB), and any new park land developers have to give up as part of their development. Because of the McKee peak planning study, I think it's going to take a couple of years before the area is developed. Apparently McKee peak is one of the most biologically diverse areas in the lower mainland.
FVMBA has tried to work out an understanding with the private land owners to allow mountain biking on their land in the meantime, however they are not interested in talking with us. In their defense, why would they work with us when mountain bikers are building new trails with large, high consequence stunts on their land without permission?
Got lights? I usually try to hook up with Stillgoing and Kim for a night ride during the week.

This is not the only area with land issues, nor will it be the last. Hope as much as possible can be kept. I do see the land owners point, but for selfish reasons am still disapointed about it. Does from lebite me down include lost oakleys? I have not given that trail enough attention, and i would enjoy riding it more for sure. I do have lights set up for my new all mountain rig. I am in serious need to up grade my helmet lamp though. My bar mounted lights seem to give me around an hour to play around. If the rain holds off i would be into a night ride for sure. I got my first real one in last monday. Oh, and you got to try alot harder if you want to offend me. ;)
Feb 18 - Buttafuoco, Mixed Bag, Amy Fisher. Hardtail goodness. A quick rip before heading over to Soft Taco to work.
To answer your question Onepunch: Lost Oakleys and Soft Taco are on city of abbotsford land.
Just in case you didn't already know:
On Saturday, April 21, 2007 at 10 am there will be an official FVMBA trail day on Ledgeview!
We will be working to re-route a section of SOB from private land onto City of Abbotsford park land, where it will be safe from development!
Stay tuned for further details!
Feb 27 - pedaled and wheezed up the back way for Hidden Valley and SOB. I saw 3 kids sessioning some "top secret" stuff and 2 guys building a new bridge to replace the one on lower SOB that is falling apart. They were using nice wide proper split cedar rungs and obviously knew what they were doing. Nice to see for a change.
Mar 14 - night ride with Kim and Stillgoing. Paper route, Da Plow and LeBite me. Fun ride including birthday beverages at the top.
Mar 18 - rode the HT from my house, then up for little Butt, Hidden Valley, lower SOB then back
