I think these people all need to be a little more compassionate to trees.
They hate them. They are killing them.

That is different. They have drilled into the tree and used lag bolts which is low impact. The nutrient flow of a tree occurs int eh shallow wood below the bark and by pre-drilling holes it reduces the "wound". The bolts are occationally backed off to let the tree grow. Check out the Zip-treck construction in Whistler - it's awesome.

Don't nail into trees for bike trails for two reasons: 1) provides a point for disease to enter the tree. 2) Structure stability is comprimized as the tree grows/dies and inevitably becomes a liability.

You should see the tree houses at Camp Stillwood up by Cultus lake. Multi-story, and with a connecting chain bridge between the two trees.

We were on a scout camp up behind stillwood, and chanced across the tree-houses on a hike. A but surreal at first, since we didn't realise Stillwood was so close.

Ya my sister is a counselor there. They now have like a 60 foot zip line and a big high ropes course too.

the logging company around here says nailing into live trees doesn't kill them, but instead kills the mill machinery.
