View Full Version : Alex rims?

I'm running Doubletracks right now, and I'd like to shed some weight with new rims. I need something fairly durable, I'm not a lightweight, but I also don't ride extremely hard either.

I'm looking at some Alex Supra D rims (the gold ones), but I haven't been able to find much feedback on durability.

I'm also looking at Mavic 729's, they're definitely a proven rim, but I like the gold anodizing on the Alex's and there also 100g lighter. I'm not sure if I'll notice 100g/rim on a 45lb bike.

Any thoughts?

i dont have any experience on them (alex rims) myself but some friends have told me that they are pretty solid rims.

pm corey@nsmb.com he's got the alex on his team DH, they are both solid rims, and if i were you i'd go with the alex for the flashy factor

Ive had good luck with them. The 729's are stronger, but the super d was strong enough i found.

I've been running Alex rims exclusively for a while. I run a DX32 on the back, which is a huge rim and burly like you wouldn't believe, and I have a Supra D up front. I've built many wheels up with the Supra D, and have yet to rebuild one. They are fairly light and really strong.

my friend blew up his rear supra d in a skatepark case. But his 729 is going strong still.

I've been kicking the crap out of my Supra Ds for the past season and a half and they're still going strong. And I'm not exactly the smoothest of smooth riders.

The thing is with wheels; it doesn't matter who builds them or what make they are. If you hit them wrong, they will break. A steel lipped, concrete edge isn't going to be friendly to any rim :)
I've seen rims that people said were indestructible, blow up... At the same time, I've seen crap rims (like my single wide) survive over three years while I tried to destroy it!

I have had great luck with alex rims. I was running thier cheapest "freeride" rim for a couple years without any problems. I blew my XT hub up though, so I just bought a complete new wheel. the rim I was using was a DM-24..cost me 24 bucks plus change for the rim alone..pretty good deal if you ask me. I would give any alex rim the nod, dave.

The gold Alex Supra D's are being built up as we type. I found the apparent last pair in existance last week and put a deposit on them while I made up my mind.

That is the truth. I should have said that in my post.

And they are sweet. I definately noticed the weight loss, everything seemed to spin easier. The gold anodizing drew me in like a shiny new penny

Noooo! I was looking into these rims after I found out the lighter weight white Syncros rims were sold out!

And those rims do look sharp on your Norco.

Well exactly 4 rides in, I managed to bend the front rim beyond straightening. I'm don't remember hitting anything hard, but I did have a little crash coming down the rock on the new Boogieman line, but didn't think it was too bad. Definitely less of a cartwheel than I've done dozens of times before. I'm hoping it was a freak thing, and the next one will be better, since it's pretty much the last one in existence. It'll get it's test at Silver Star this weekend.

I am guilty of not checking spoke tension since I got the wheels built.

Another unfortunate update. The rear flat spotted in 3 places due to my bad suspension setup allowing it to bottom out. I tightened the spokes up, 3 weeks later landing a very small drop, 7 spokes break and the rear rim is toast. When I took the tire off and had a good look, there were many more flat spots, dents, and warps than I originally thought there were. In less than 2 months.

While these rims were given some abuse, they weren't subjected to anything near what the Doubletracks took in stride for 2 solid years. It's a good thing I kept them, because they're getting laced back on today. Maybe I'm too much of a hack to use lighter components, unfortunately this was a $300+ experiment that lasted less than 2 months.

They're shiny and pretty, apparently strong, but they sure don't take much abuse.

The second rim I had on the front is still straight, if anyone has an 05 Team DH and wants a spare, a 12 pack of Redbull and they're yours.

if you plan on buying a new rim or wheel.. go check out overtime.. My friend bought a dual double track 26" front 20mm rear qr for 160. they have more wheelsets on deals! I saw a set of sun s-type.. for 130 i think.. 20mm front and qr rear..

I am with davet.. about double track rims.. I have dual double track.. and love them. Took a few hard hits but still straight as hell.. no flat spots or dents. Both of my doulbe tracks were built by overtime and they give you life time wheel trueing for free =).
