A buddy sent me a pic with this old dude walking around with one. I was just wondering if anyone has some feed back or anything?

There's a bunch of different ones. Maybe post the pic?

Something like those? Or do you mean like the old Tioga Disc rear wheel?

I don't think that would hold up to freeriding.

It was a company called "TAG Wheels" (Technically Adavanced Geometry). They gave me a card and a t-shirt. Looks like the old 5-spoke "aerospoke" wheels. Modular hub to fit most bikes. Lighter than Dmax. Looks ok, but no website or pics.
The card says:

There was a thread about this about half a year (?) ago. Some guy was asking if there was any interest in such a product.

Carbon fiber would get shredded on the trail. You know when you are riding along and you hear a sound that sounds like your spokes and it kind of freaks you out for a split second until you realize it was just a little pebble in your spokes? With carbon fiber wheels, you would probably have to get off your bike and make sure all the threads are still in tact. If 1 thread is loose, guess what? By by new wheels, they are ruined.

I don't know about that "SC Blur". The Spinergy wheels are fiber spoke and they seem to hold up pretty damn well. If Spinergy's PBO spoke was used with a composite rim that'd be one interesting wheelset.

they aren't actually fibers and they aren't carbon, also they are covered with a sheath to prevent against abrasive damage.

Carbon fiber stuff can be made incredibly tough. I have been using a pair of Life Link carbon ski poles for I think 5 or 6 seasons. They have put up with steel edges all that time. Very sharp steel edges. They are scratched a nicked all over the bottoms. Only around 15mm diameter too. So it's not a valid comment to say if you scratch a rim it's toast. If it's built right it could be fine. I doubt that it's carbon though. I think only Campagnolo make an all carbon clincher rim. Ungodly expensive, like $3000 for a pair of wheels or something silly like that. Plus they aren't any lighter than a good aluminum clincher and the braking qualities of carbon rims is pathetic. Carbon doesn't disipate heat very well and standard pads overheat fast and melt. Even the carbon rim specific pads don't work so hot. Tend to get grab when they get hot. Of course for a disc brake system that isn't a consideration. With road clinchers the difficulty with using carbon is it's ability to hold a high pressure tire. Again not a consideration for a mountainbike but I don't think carbon rims would be appropriate off road. Because I don't think it would offer any benefit over aluminum. If it were dent proof it would be good though. I think that's what the intent is with the subject wheels. Something that will be really hard to damage.

I am only stating what I know about all road frames. I suppose they could lather on the resin on the outside to help, but still, I doubt the weight savings would be worth the price.
HA! I din't even see this post about TAG. Yes, it's TAG Wheels and the it is called the FRX5. Supposed to be the strongest wheel ever built. I am only the graphics guy so I don't know all the details and tech stuff about it. I do know however, that it is NOT carbon fibre... it's a composite of different materials. It also has a spine or ribs running internally like a whole whack of little triangles which gives it it's strength. The guys from TAG should be posting soon. It will be launching in the near future. And yes, it's shore tested.

NOTE: These rims will retail for less than Mavic's DeeMax and have a lifetime guarentee. You break it, they send you a new one... period. They're also looking for "testers" to try and break it. You'll be hearing much more soon.

try to break a wheel eh.... humm what does one need to qualify? also r u stuck to the hub it comes with?

I'm not sure about qualifying... they have a few pros onboard and a few shore boys going to give em a go. Basically, the deal is that they are the strongest wheels ever built, and if you can, they'd like you to prove them wrong. The details will come with the launch of the wheel. "Launch will be November 2005"
As for the hub. My understanding is that there will be 4 different hubs available (maybe more), I believe they're XT, XTR, Saint and TAG's own Titanium hub. I'll try to get some more info on that for you. What I don't know is if there will be a 24" made. I know there will be a BMX version called the BMX5. Also, this wheel can hold a tire up to 3".

I'm not sure about Hadley, although I don't see why they wouldn't. I'll find out.

Lookin like "2496g per wheel set". The guys are intending on posting with some more info about it. They weren't going to untill closer to the launch being that the site isn't ready and whatnot. But I'm hoping you'll hear from them sooner rather than later.

saw a couple of riders at Whistler Bike Park last week rolling around on "Mag" style spoke wheels...urghh
we stopped using Mag wheels in BMX years back because they basically sucked, and self destroyed very very quickly, as well as letting inner tubes escape
cannot see how a set of mag wheels is ever gonna have the dynamic feel of a set of hand built "wire" spoke wheels, which allow movement and deflection across rough terrain giving a certain ground "feel", and also give huge choices of hubs, rims, spokes, etc.
a mag wheel is gonna have a "dead" feeling....

A friend of mine had a set of Spins back in the day (three spoke composite) which he throughly destroyed (cracked them at the rim etc).
