Hey,
Anyone interested in a heli drop here in Whistler on Rainbow mountain? We need five people and one has to be someone who has done the drop before. The cost would be 100 bucks each.

I'll call and findout.
I was interested in doing it this year. Apparently it is all singletrack DH (nothing to crazy) and it last about 2hrs so it is not exactly bang for your buck. However, if you have never done a heli drop before, it is worth the experience.

I recently (August 7th) did a heli-drop on Rainbow Mountain and let me tell you....it was amazing. One word to describe it. EPIC. There were 10 of us in total, 5 in the chopper at a time. We reached the peak, had a snowball fight and took some incredible pictures. The ride down took about 2-2.5hrs. It consisted of sandy and loamy singletrack, but you get to experience almost every kind of terrain as you head down the mountain. Rocks, trees, logs, sand, dirt, mud, roots....Everything. Here are a few pictures from before the takeoff. The pics from the top of the mountain havn't been uploaded yet.

BOYCOTT HELI-DROPS
I did it once and only because it was a free gift and I was ashamed. Sure it was fun and everything, but seeing how I had ridden the same trail (Tenquille Lake)15 years prior (ascent as well as descent) and had just as much of a blast, there's just no comparison between the 2 experiences.
Earn your turns.

Ive never heli-dropped Tenquille. Where do you get dropped? I've only ridden up to it and its not a bad climb at all.

No - if I was to do it I would do it as a hike. The bugs were bad in late July so I might head up in late September mid-week to poke around

Man, you guys. This reminds me why I miss B.C. for the riding. Nothing anywhere else in Canada compares.

That's a super nice photo LeeLau. My sister might have some photos of our heli-drop there but I'm not sure. I've still got pics from other rides to Tenquille, but digital cameras were just a dream then. As for the location of the drop, it was between the old cabin and the lake. It was a long weekend and there were some campers there in tents; I don't think they had any idea a bunch of mtn. bikers were just going to drop right in on them! This was one of the things I myself was quite embarrassed by.

OK - that's what i thought. The heli-drop really doesn't save you that much of a climb.

I don't think it's a good idea to go with a group of people who you don't know. Rainbow is serious. I don't think I go through a single epic ride any more without having to pick up garbage, perform first aid, or out and out rescue people. I don't judge heli-droppers harshly, like some do, but I will say that those are usually the least prepared people and because they didn't work so hard to get there they tend to treat things a bit casually in terms of garbage, lines chosen and equipment carried. Remember that up there, a flat tire or broken chain can easily lead to sleeping under the stars in your riding gear. If you know what you're doing and you KNOW that everyone else in your party is as solid as you, then it's all good. Otherwise, I don't think so. So, all that said, please be careful and enjoy riding. Interestingly enough, I still don't really see that many people in these places. Rainbow and Tenquille are quite busy now, but there's lot's more out there.
