Why was everyone so stoked about Crankworx?!?!
People talked about how great all the grooming on the trails was.
(1) when the only trails they groomed were for the races and once the public could ride them they were trashed, I haven't seen the trails in such bad shape all year.
(2) Trails were closed for days.
(3) Half the shit they built will either be ripped down, cut in half or just closed.
(4) Now that the mountain has put so much money into crankworx they're not going to put the time and money into fixing up the trails that crankworx ripped up.
(5) the village was way too busy with annoying people everywhere getting in the way.

Eh...I had fun. I liked watching the racers.
ALine is butchered though...especially the lower last section. Come over the big second hit, and you land in a gigantic hole that could swallow a Volkswagen.

In my job last year, Crankworx sucked, because it just meant more work for me. But my job this year wasn't effected, so it was sweet.
Maybe Skizzors was feeling the same way this year that I was last year. I couldn't wait for the circus to leave last year. This yea, meh.

The washrooms in the gondola midstation dont work...and are full of excrement. I pressume this is from crankworks. They have been closed since the 8th.....thats not too great...probably unhealthy.

LOTS of work. Usually I dont mind hardtailing it but I sooo wish I had a squish for that weekend. Or at least my 888's on it. There is that ginormous crater almost under the chairlift - just after the first double. Easy to go around but it almost rocked me the first time.

Sometimes the negative people just need to be ignored. Its part of the game
1 - ya....your point. Its gonna happen with traffic
2 - Its an event...what do you want? This happens in winter, summer and every big event on the planet...heck even freaking golf courses. sheesh
3 - again...yep. To be expected. Insurance reasons. No surprise here
4 - How many new trails opened last year? How many hotels (stop thinking so isolationist, whistler works as a RESORT, not just a single mountain, go talk to the marketting team) made money and were full. This is a very underinformed piece of information. The mountain came away with cash, trails will be maintained and new trails will open, all partially because of crankworx.
5 - Leave. Its whistler. It you don't like it go to Golden. Small resort, good trails and they won't ever be whistler.
Crankworx is a good thing. Beyond the trail work that needs to be done and to be expected the mountain needs one more big event (national, wc something big) to be a bonafied summer resort. For those of us trying to be in the area for life, this would help us all out. Restaurants open longer, hotels busier longer meaning more work for everyone. More money for trails. Its all reciprocal, if you can't think beyond your own world than a resort isn't where you should be, especially one that is trying to become a true 4 seasons resort. Not everyone likes it, but its what most of the hotels, intrawest and even a lot of locals I know want/need.

This year's event was bigger than ever. That means more money than ever was pumped into the local economy that weekend. That means that resorts resorts are starting to see fiscal advantages to hosting such events, and will therefore be more willing to pump money into park development.
Added to that, it was a kick ass weekend! If you didn't like the condition of Aline, then you should have tried some other trails (there were lots in great shape), especially up Garbonzo.
Not to mention the Slopestyle rocked.

I would imagine that based on how busy Whistler was during Crankworx that the sponsors were very happy. Happy sponsors are more likely to return for following years, and as was discussed in that other thread, huge sponsorship may look tacky but it is also what results in a bigger and better event.
As for the crowds in town - if you live here, you get used to dealing with it. As busy as the village may have been last weekend, it was still no comparison to what it's like here at Christmas.

Well done.
If I were a whistler local/resident, I would have been stoked for crankworx. Being someone who would be a tourist, as I would have been had I attended...not so much fun. The elecricity from such an event must make the whole thing surreal, and afterwards very desolate.
I dont know if I could live in a resort town like Whistler...I would love to give it a go when I have the resources allotted, but for now, its a pipedream.
I don't understand how people think the trails should be 100% all the time. The fact they can keep them open with the traffic they see is impressive. Give the trail crews time and things will be back to normal (pre-crankworx)

I went this year because I'd never been.
Was it worth it? For me it definitely was just because of the trade show - I finally found a FF helmet that fits my melon, it's the only one that does. Too bad Specialized won't have it out for another 5-6 months or so.
As for the event, the only problem I really noticed was you had to pick your view spot based on what you were willing to miss. We moved around a bit to see the pros hitting different things. We started at the top of the event, not such a good view unless you push your way to the front of the pack. Basically we saw the riders come off the teeter, disappear - reappear in the air on the hill, disappear, reappear on the quarter pipe, disappear... etc etc go around/off the wall, and disappear for a long time, then ride off the box at the bottom. Moving down the hill was better, the location we eventually ended up in allowed us to see most of the hill and when we couldn't see the rider simply turnin the other way we could see him on the jumbo tron.
Showing up to this free event shows the sponsors whatr kind of support their is for the sport. The more support they see, the more products they'll develop for the sport.

You know, I thought that A-line was rough, then I did Lower DH, Crack addict (my only crash and it cracked my carbon helmet, but I'm ok), National downhill, duffman and A-line didn't seem too bad. I guess it's all relative.
I for one had a great time, spent lots of money, ate great food, met a lot of great people, and saw a 360 off the road gap, and even though he didn't make it I saw a close backflip w/ a 360 (cedric).
Anyone know what happened to Cedric on the DH race, I couldn't help but notice he came in 50 somethingth place???
Austin, were you wearing a austin3:16 t-shirt? I saw you (or the shirt) but it didn't register until I had already passed you (it was after a few).
Aloha to all I met and if you're coming to Kauai, pm me...

cedric got a flat.
I will now defeat your "logic" :
(1) when the only trails they groomed were for the races and once the public could ride them they were trashed, I haven't seen the trails in such bad shape all year.
If they didnt groom them beforehand, instead of a-line having somewhat rough berms it would be a giant crater.
(2) Trails were closed for days.
That was for the maintanance and for the pros to take practive runs. You wouldnt want to ride a-line and have a grinning mach-ten cedric gracia riding your tail.
(3) Half the shit they built will either be ripped down, cut in half or just closed.
Yes, but the interesting stunts attract global attention to whistler. More attention = more tourists. More tourists = more money. More money = better trails.
(4) Now that the mountain has put so much money into crankworx they're not going to put the time and money into fixing up the trails that crankworx ripped up.
Whistler made lots of cash off of tourism during the Crankworx festival, and i could imagine that some of the profits will be spent on making the trails smoother and better.
(5) the village was way too busy with annoying people everywhere getting in the way.
Those "annoying people" spent millions of dollars at whistler, putting money into the local economy and making whistler even richer, giving them money to spend on the mountain. Tool.
So next time, stfu and quit being an ignorant crybaby.

The trail crew will be fixing the trails, but with things being as dry and dusty as they are that is extremely difficult. Check out B-Line, Crank it up, and some of the other trails, they have had some much needed maintenance in the last week.

Welcome to Whistler!
We missed Crankworx this year, but if it was bigger then last year then I'll bet it was busy.
Like it was said, the summer crowds are NOTHING compared to the High winter crowds! Imagine all those people at Slopestyle on that run, on skis, all coming down at the same time.
Talk about running the moving gates!
If we were at Crankworx that weekend we would not have ridden the bike park since I'm sure it was very busy and hot. There are so many other trails you can ride in the area that you could go for a great ride and then come back for the festivities.
We also probably would have booked an alpine tour like we did last year:
