What happened to B.C.'s dominance of the freeride scene? Used to be 8 riders out of the the top ten at major contests would be from B.C.
http://www.crankworx.com/results/results1.htm
Only one canuck in the top ten. And look at that: 4 of the top 5 from the USA.

Has hell frozen over?

Also, where were Matty Hunter and Ryder Kasprick?

Crankworx is a circus show, not real freeriding :)

Alot of the top riders are from california because slopestyle is more about jumping and tricks then anything else. They have amazing jumping skills from cali

i saw matt hunter but he was jsut walking around. maybe he is injured?

Kasprik didn't qualify. He went for a no-foot can off the first drop, landed funny, and coasted to the bottom. I figure he hurt himself.

Hunter was in the final, but he was less than impressive. Just big airs.

*edit...
Less than impressive in the slopestyle sense...the airs were good and big, but not up to the calibre of the other things that were thrown down in the comp.

No Ryder manged, after after the no foot can. Got shot off the the next jump and ditched and look liked he landed weird. And yes Crankworx slopestyle is all about dirtjumps and who can trick them the best. Every single guy in the top 7 except Bearcloth hit the 2 big jumps and tricked them, none even tried the the other stuff really. So its hard 2 score points when u dont have the big tricks like the dirtjumper guys do. Like Watson, Wade, schley, Gracia, Super T etc...

Thats exactaly what i was thinking. It was more of bigger dirtjumps and step ups then anything else. Theres no real contest that bring in alot of North Shore influence.

the bc boys are good at sending the big lines... most of the guys that are good at slopestyle come from areas where there arent many mtns and they have dirt and skate parks to ride day in and day out. most of the top bc guys are old now anyway... and guys like gully and ryde-guide are starting to step into their places. Soon, we will take over

I agree. Not knocking the event(some unbelievable moves were executed e.g. roadgap 360) but its not freeriding as I define it. I have always viewed it as being a big BMX course that happens to be on the side of a mountain rather than on flat terrain. I am not really a fan of BMX...prefer old school Shore riding.

**** you guys are whiny.. im pretty sure "freeriding" is what ever one person wants it to be. and no one even called this a freeride comp ? its slopestyle ? sop aalll you 30 year old shore huckers can go ride some skinees and call it whaTEVER YOU want.

If the Slopestyle designers throw in a mandatory skinny/tech. (Shore) section, I'm sure more BC boys will be up on the podium.

i agree. unfortunately the crowds will be swillin' beers at the longhorn or riding the Park as skinny/tech is not as fun to watch as someone just givin' 'er IMHO.

I think it's probably just because of sheer population. BC boys dominating everything just couldn't last as the sport grows. We certainly don't have any excuses considering some of the worlds best riding is right around here.
Anyway, Bearclaw is still probably the best rider around today. He won just about everything this year.

if the track of the slopestyle was smoother and less rocky than someone could have rode it on a bmx (stepper trannies might be needed also), therefore i dont think its a very good mountain bike contest. too bad theres no more red bull rampage. id also like to see a timed DHish section in the next comp. i think rippin trails as fast a possible is a big part of freeride.

but judged events have always caused alot of augrments, im just glad no one got hit in the knee with a peice of pipe.

Its obvious...its a growing sport, out in BC you guys started it all, you had the most riders in one place, no wonder you were dominating. But its growing, there is now riders EVERYWHERE, its naive to think that there isnt extreamly talented riders all over the world now, hence why the "top 10's" are getting more diverse. And I agree with the guy who said some of you are whiny, its a slopestyle comp... thats how the courses are, what do expect, big rock gardens and knarl? Thats what comps like the rampage are, slopestyles are smooth and loaded with big stuff, just like snowboarding / skiing.

Yeah, or if you have to do the downhill race or something like that to qualify for the Slopestyle.

I think they should invite the BMXers next year. They'd throw down for sure. Put in some rails and urbanish features, and the mtb-ers would be owned.

Nothing should be mandatory in a slopestyle... That would limit lines. All you guys saying they should change the course so the BC boys would do better gotta think a lil more... Why not just become a better rider and then get top 3 that way instead of changing the course... Slopstyle shouldnt be about the slow tech skinny's IMO. Its derived from the snow scene. Want skinny's? Go to that indoor north shore thing or something. I'll admit I may be stirring the pot a little, but still.

Jay Miron is putting on a dirt jump comp at Whistler at the end of the month, Aug 25-27. Miron puts on the Metro contest, which is one of the nuttiest park contests, and he has Redbull as the major sponsor, so it should be out of hand.
I'm not sure, but I think it's going to be in the boneyard? Maybe the jump farm?

yeah, im pretty sure that dirt park in whistler was being built when crankworks was on. its near beside the Giro box. looks really nice.

half my times spent on wheels is on a bmx, so im not at all against jump comps. I feel bmx provides all we need in the way of slopestlye/dirt jump/park events so I'd like so see more mountain in mtn bike events.

but whatever, F' freeride, i'll just DH

i think that if u put a skiniyish section in it still wouldnt have changed the results cuz were talking about pros here if they need to learn how to ride skinnys to win im sure the cali boys will learn and still throw huge airs

they need more then bmx inspired stuff, the jumps and half pipes and stuff, they need some ladders on the side and stuff
