Hey Everyone!
I just came back from the slopestyle and I can't wipe the smile off my face. Hands down this was the sickest biking I have every seen in my life!!
WHAT WENT DOWN IN THE LAST RUN!!!
Darren made history today and progressed mountain biking to a new level with a massive high-speed 360 over the Boneyard rd gap. It was absolutely insane and you should have heard everyone go nuts. It freaked me out so much I was barely able to keep the camera on the rest of his run!! Get ready because you’re going to be seeing endless pictures and video of this insanity.
Then right after Darren came Paul B’s final run, who under extreme pressure kept it all together and delivered for the world. Going big he did a 360 off the quarter, two consecutive back flips over the large dirt gap jumps, 360 x-up off the hip and then a tailwip off the semi-trailer. Again, the crowd went nuts and I was just in complete awe.
Zinc having pulled an amazing solid first run, came out blazing for his last with huge consecutive back flip x-ups over the big dirt jumps and a smooth 360 off the semi. (I should mention that all the riders were doing the big starting drop and teeter-totter).
Last was Cam, who qualified first overall into the final round. He has been flat out amazing and consistent this entire weekend. Cam didn’t disappoint or screw up on a single run and pulled huge back flip flares, the only hand plant in the comp and every other trick in the book other then a tailwip. You should have seen the extension on his superman’s!!!
ALSO NOTE WORTHY
------------------------
Kyle Straight was amazing as ever with huge tailwips and combo moves over the massive dirt jumps. He was also the only one to do a drop-bar spin off the side of the quarter and nearly die on a failed back flip attempt. How he walked away from that second run I have no idea.
Cowan through down his trade mark moves (huge flips, 360’s and no hander's) and as he said “represented for all those over 30”. However, Cedric pulled the biggest transfer lines while wade showed everyone one that he’s still one of the best riders in the world.
CRASHES
------------
Timo went down hard on the boneyard rd gap landing. I couldn’t see what happened but sounds like he had a wheel malfunction. You have to feel bad for him as he was likely trying to make a comeback after missing out on a season.
Burdon also when down really hard in the first run trying to do a huge back flip of a wooden kicker.
Niels Windfeldt – aka shoes also went down hard after doing a superman off the semi trailer. That guy is a big up and comer!!!
RIDER TO WATCHOUT FOR (EURO INVASION)
----------------------------------------------------
Jamie Goldman - landed sick huge back flips consistently
Niels Windfeldt (Norway) - aka "shoes" as I call him (because of the orange shoes), just killed it with tailwips of the quarter, superman’s off everything, No foot cans etc. The bright shoes are actually a good idea because it makes it easy to see his foot work when they leave the pedals.
Joscha Forstreuter (Germany): This German guy in black and yellow pulled some nice back flips, 360's and indy airs. He really surprised me because in practice he really seemed to be struggling.
Get ready because the Euro invasion is here and they're going to help reshape the future of mountain biking!!!
FINAL RESULTS
--------------------
1-Paul B
2-Darren B
3-Cam Zink
4-Camron McCaul
I think Darren should have won personally just because the risk he took over the gap seemed almost life and death. I’m also unsure about the two cam’s. Overall, I think it was too close and in the end it came down to personal preference. You’ll see that it was more of a draw then anything.

i'm another one that thinks bearclaw got robbed. that 360 over the gap was INSANE. what a vibe was there today, i'm glad i went, sick moves being laid down left right and centre. nice to see wade and vanderham ripping it up - the edge ride of the c-wall looked nuts, but the shore boys did it with style.
oh and i saw ifo too, kinda hard to miss that beard :P saw jesse on crutches also :( actually come to think saw a LOT of people on crutches. one guy with a full leg cast was carried up and down the road by his buddies  pretty nice of them i'd say.

Bearclaw definetly got robbed. Paul B's run was solid for sure and as tech as his tailwhip off the semi was it didn't come close to Bearclaw's 360 over the road gap.
While Paul B.'s run was sweet, I've seen consecutive backflips before, and I've seen a tailwhip off the trailer before. I've never seen anything like that 360 off the road gap. That was INSANE! He should have won.

I agree with most here, Basigotia was out standing, but Barecloth was the man this night. You almost became numb to how big all the stuff on the course was. They were all killing it so smooth that they made it look easy. Some of the crashes were scary. Unreal comp.

Man, I think Bearclaw should have taken it too.
Last year, Paul B won, I think because few of us had seen tailwhips off big things on a mtn bike before.
This year, Bearclaw should have won because few of us have seen 360s off anything that size before.
My stoke factor was highest for Bearclaw's 360. I think he should have won. It was so huge, and way smoother than anyone elses straight airs!
There should be some good footage from Freeride Ent...they had a trolley cam or whatever you call it opperating.
Kyle Strait inpresses me. He rips it in Slopestyle, did awesome in the Mountain Cross, and seems to get better all the time.

judged events suck.....that's the best part about racing, clear cut winners or losers, not subject to the whim of some judges and what they're diggin' on any particular day.....heard lots of surprise about jamie goldman not placing higher as well

You dont see 360s off a road gap in a race though...so I wouldnt say they suck, I see your point though about being clear cut. I think the point of slopestyle type events it more to just show off the best stuff you can do out there, seems to be a less empasis on placing and more on just stoking everyone else. If that makes any sense.... I know some of you guys have video, get that edited asap, or send it to me and I will, lol. I just wanna see this stuff, it sounds like it was awesome.

Jamie kicks ass, he should have placed higher. I was gonna watch the event but I got slammed at work when our pms system crashed. I would have liked to have seen but I definately don't track placings, they are rarely accurate which just sucks. You can watch the x-games for 5minutes and know all the biases...haha

kyle dit not ditch his bike, his bike didnt want to backflip so the brakes locked up or his shock malfunctioned cuz i was 15 feet away from the middle of the jump near the wall and i hear a "scurch" of a brake pad or a crack in a frame or a low sound when his front tire was in the air but his back was still on...then it lurched and his feet came off as shown bucking him forward with so much force his hands came off and there is the end result

i also think the comp was pretty stupid, because of the qualifying. i think that everyone in the comp should of had to qualify.
i also think the comp was pretty stupid, because of the qualifying. i think that everyone in the comp should of had to qualify.
I rode up the chair with some dude who said he got 6th in the qualifiers. He was saying the same thing. However, I hate to say it but nobody really wants to watch a bunch of "no name" riders riding the slopestyle. The contest is just as much about the big names showing off as anything.
My beef is with the format. I don't really understand the 2-run format with the top 12 moving on. Seems like a recipe for people coasting at least one of the runs. If everybody got two runs and the best score won the pressure would be on for both runs. No standing around waiting for people to get back to the top and you could probably open the contest up to a few more people. None of the crazy shit got unloaded until the final run. Imagine if that level was on for both runs?
As far as Berrecloth not winning. Well, I just about lost my shit when he did that 360. Easily the craziest thing I saw all day. But one trick does not a run make. What didn't Paul B. do? I can see how it could have gone either way.
I thought Cowan had a sick final run going until he tried that flippy thing and bailed. And Aaron Chase had some creative lines. I thought he would do better.
Oh well. I got my money's worth.

I thought Zinc should have been top 2 at least, his backflip 1 foot xups were way more tech than paul b's.

the most under rated rider out there was cam mccaul. he looked the most solid out there on his bike for sure. zinc had some sweet nosed in 3's which scored huge in my book. Claws 360 was rediculous, even though i knew it was gonna happen. I think pauls run was just a tad more solid then claws run, so i think the win was justified.
Oh, and for any of you who have somthing to say about the judging.... those guys were Snowboard Superpipe judges that were unbiased towards any one rider.
i think Paul B's run was a touch soft in teh middle of the course (after the dual backflip) whereas darren B's run was super tech and solid from begining to end...
his 360 off the peir was landed so smooth it was unnatural... :dizzy:

Darren B, got ripped off. I sorta think that he was trying to get a messege sent to him, that is to learn to backflip. Speaking of learning to flip. Talked with Gully after the comp and sunday at like 4. After the comp he said he needed to go learn some tricks then when I talked to him today he was doin backflips!!!! Way to go Geoff! The contest was absolutely amazing. I enjoyed every second of it. Also, did anybody see me on Saturday. I was wearing a Grizzlies Jersey with the big 50 (BIG COUNTRY Reeves) all day and night. For the slopestyle I was on the big step up jump on the biker-x just above the berm with the hip jump on it. I know I talked to many random people and even more heard me but was anybody that I talked to on here?

Judges always seem to get excited about back flips. Personally, and I've heard many bikers say the same, I'd rather see a big smooth 360 anyday (a la Berrecloth over the road gap).
I remember a few years back when some of the pro BMXers were saying they didn't want to do back flips because they thought it was an ugly trick... it's spectacular, and a crowd/judge pleaser... but ugly and technically not as hard as a tail whip or something, just more dangerous.
... but that's just one opinion - and I'll never be able to do any of those tricks so what do i know!

i've never really liked judged events either , but after that event . . . .
the three off the road gap was unreal .
the overall performance of all the riders is mind blowing .
i know it wasn't the craziest , riskiest move out there , but mc cauls hand plant off the log was so casual and clean and unique . . . i will always remember that .
cedric may not have gone the biggest or craziest , but he always tries to do something different than the others . . . big respect for that .
timo will only come to whistler to party . . . he told me that while i treated him after his crash .
i think i heard the ground say " owww , shit ! " , when bourdon landed on it after his failed landing from backflip . solid impact . again , big respect . that is one solid rider .
really too bad about nils ; aside from the local kid semeniuk , i think he worked on his stuff the hardest all weekend . . . he was there pretty much start to finish every session the course was open , either throwing down , or pushing back up : very little standing around . tough to miss those shoes !
good show from the local kids , pro and semeniuk . can't be easy tossin' it with the big guys , but they handled themselves well in their own backyard , livin' the dream . . .

If Darren was on team Kona or if specialized opened its pockets to Whistler the way Kona does he would have won like he should have. In fact, how did Paul B's run even beat either Cameron? Both of those guys had equally solid runs with variations on their backflips. I think it should have been Darren, Cam, Cam, then Paul B. Whatever though. They all performed awesome and we had a great time watching! Thanks for the great show guys. My biggest shoutout is to Wade. His run was better than any riding we've seen from him in years and he again proved that he really still is at the top of the game. So Wade when are we doing that ride?

The judging was brutal... it really should have been 1] Darren, 2] Kyle, and then 3] Paul. ... Darren and Kyle had very smooth runs, tricked more stuff then any rider and both had a very smooth style. I think the judges didn't watch the 1st half of the course, and didn't paul miss his pedals? ? ?
The trials event was pretty rad also, John webster destroyed everyone else with only 4 days on a new frame with different geometry. Hans Rey also went in the comp, and after a tough first round he rode super smooth on his second lap at his first comp in over 8 years. It was also nice of him to hang out and chat with local riders, when I first met him in '96 he was super chill, and still to this day he is the most down to earth pro i've ever met. It woulda been rad to have jeff there also. Nonetheless, quite a few pros came to watch the trials and I even saw Lopes giving props to local BC talent.
In the end crankworks was one of the best bike weekends I've been to in ages. It was soo sweet to see soo many riders, so many styles, and all in one spot. Major props to all the riders, organizers, and those who came.

That 360 was the single most impressive thing I've ever seen on a bike. Me and Chris were standing right under the gap. I think Timo hit a rock or something on the landing, it looked pretty smooth while he was in the air, but he went over the bars as soon as he landed, it looked like he was ok after though.

We were right at the berm after the tranny. It looked to us like his front tire just hit some soft dirt and he lost it.
We saw Berrecloth walk out on the ramp and scope the drop just a few minutes before his run. I had a feeling something wild was coming up!
Does anyone have the full results? So what happend after rider Cam McCaul?

guys , forget the speculation about who got screwed , and who wanted who to win so that they could make story , and who is paying who for results . . . .
it just isn't happening like that . . .
the riders know when they show up for something like crankworx that they are basically performing in a demonstration of their skills . it is a judged format , and they know that better than anyone . you don't see them getting all bent out of shape over the results . . . not in public anyway , so you shouldn't either .
