View Full Version : Slopestyle = One Giant Billboard

So the boneyard this year is one giant billboard, and I don't like it.
The big red trailer is an eyesore, and the wallride and the quarterpipe are now really ugly.
In my opinion, the focus should be on the riders, not the sponsors. When someone's tailwhipping out of the quarter, you'll see the sponsor first, then the whip.
Granted, they woudln't be riding if it wasn't for the sponsors, but...the QP and wallride will be painted for the rest of the season too, even when the comp's over.
I know WB has the pay the bills, but...I just don't like it.

I don't know. At least they're not logos of non-mountain bike companies. Imagine hitting the McDonalds Box, or the Translink Stepdown... And I think that the red-painted trailer is very nice. Or at least a definite improvement over the white colour it had before they painted it. It looked like an auto-wrecker yard before they painted it...

The QP has a "Full Throttle" logo painted on it, which is Coke's entry into the Red Bullesque energy drink world. Sort of mountain bikish, but being Coke, sort of not.
And I agree, the white was terrible. At least it doesn't look so trashy now.

I'm glad for the sponsors, without them building the boneyard to what it is would have cost other trails, or it wouldn't be as big as it is. Unfortunately the Bike Park is there to make money, it's a business and without money it would be less or not excist.

Yes, but last year most of the same features were there, without the gaudy logos.
The inflatable cell-phones and beer cans and vinyl banners are kosher, because they are taken down afterwards. I guess paint can fade too.

no sponsors = no comps like this. sad but true :/
just ignore the corporate side of it all and enjoy crankworx and the boneyard for what its worth...

With all of these sponsors, perhaps this year the first prize for the competitors risking life and limb will be worth more than the door prize for the spectators.

Anyone that doesn't like sponsor logos should buck up themselves and paint it however they want.
Event coordinators work so hard to get sponsors to throw money into it, companies step up and ask for recognition in return, and people bitch because it looks like a banner. Guess what, if it wasn't for sponsor money, there wouldn't be Crankworx. It isn't just about the riders. It's about the sport, and most of those riders wouldn't be were they are today without manufacturer support.
If more sponsors means more money for more features, then I'm all for it. I don't care if A-Line becomes the Pepsi Trail and they paint the whole thing blue and red. If you want pristine wilderness, there are plenty of places to go. The bikepark is not one of them.

Joyride didn't happen this year because they didn't have big-name sponsors.
So, no sponsors = no event.
And no one is going to sponsor an event if they aren't going to be able to fly their flag, as it were...

Name a sport that doesn't have the playing field littered with logo's. More logo's means more money is going into biking, and I think it's a good thing.

And the price to play is reduced because of sponsors. I say bring it on. If you don't like the huge Marzocchi logo on the wall ride you just need to put more dirt on it! :dizzy:

"Jim Beam, the true spirit of mountain biking."
That's the only one that gets me... plastered over the concert stage; quite how it has anything to do with the spirit of mountain biking I do not know.

lets take our 20" cousin, the bmx world for example.....look at all ofthe ads in the bmx comps these days, nokia edorsed comps its nothing but the nokia logo, same with t-mobile sponsored events... i read in bmxplus that the grande prize for a t-mobile comp was somewhere around 10,000-30,000, if you want mtn biking to grow, its going to take some getting used to, and im not just saying lets be like bmx. but we have to be somewhat of opportunists by taking a few outsider logos into the sport to allow it to grow, im not saying to sell out, but take advantage of something that will doubtfully have little negative effects later. even monster park has done well the way it was supported, im sure bike mag was huge with how they contributed. the way i see it, the mtn bike industry isn't big enough on its own YET to throw big comps with little outside support. remember the old volvo/canondale teams of ac chausson and gracia
whats the first logo that pops into your head looking at this picture.......
http://www.cyclingnews.com/photos/2002/interviews/volvocannondale/s_ac_tight_side.jpg
its volvo
those sorts of freeride/dh teams dont exist much anymore, and it would be cool for riders to have that sort of outside exposure that would allow them to see a few extra zeros on the ends of their paychecks, i doubt they would mind thaaat much.
I reckon it's the Oakley O actually.

These companies are sponsoring our sport, they can put their logo whereever the hell they want, get used to it, every other sport has it. Its not really a big deal, just a logo. PS: that marz skull is sweet!

One good thing about the sponsorship is that they were giving out free Full Throtle drinks at the base of the mountain this weekend. They taste OK, and the can is really big.

yeah but how is it compared to red bull? :D
oh yeah. w/o the red bull sponsorship then u won't have any of the red bull bike events.

Don't we have a redbull bmx event coming up shortly?
As for slopestyle not being redbull. This could be a good thing. More coverage and more competing companies. Since this side of the sport is looking for exposure it could potentially help if the event is a success (I can't wait to see the numbers from the mountain)

i personally like the mazorchi logo on the wall ride. It was there when i was in whistler in July and it makes u notice the wall ride from the pan pac area, also mountain biking is all ads. Look at the clothes we wear and the bikes we ride they are all heavly advertised. Just as all X-treme (sic) sports are, they're just western globalisation prretending to be alt. Its the world we live in
