The best off camber weird root on Upper Oilcan got rocked in/filled. I loved that root! It's funny how some things just stick out, every time I rode UOC, I always noticed it, and knew exactly how my tire was going to slide out when I hit it.
I'm kinda sad it's gone (well, buried), but oh well!
RIP!
P.S. You all probably think I'm crazy, but someone else out there knows what I'm talking about... right?
where is said root? there are alot of f*cked roots. where is it relative to big smooth, little smooth, uturn, etc?
oh, i think i know the one, between little smooth and the uturn? it was slippery as hell in the rain right?

Only ridden UOC once in my life (4 yrs. ago), so I dunno which root. Sorry for your loss.
And, yes, I think you're crazy.:)

is it the one that sticks out and down into the ground? the tree is on the left and u ride on the right of it? i was there when old pete was "protecting" this root. we helped him out a bit by being rock bitches for a while.

^^^I'm assuming it wasn't really voluntary. Like u just stopping to say high and he was like, get me 2 big rocks? And if it was the one just before the u turn area, I know what u mean and I could just never seem to get that one thing down.

well i don't know which root this is exactly so obviously I will have to ride the trail soon, there's just no other way. :)
I like roots too but its probably for the best that it got rocked in. Eventually it would just wear out and the tree would be unhappy

RIP my favourite root to hit on UOC. Very sad to see it gone. Oh well... what can you do?

Nono, it's just above that fastish section before Big Smoothie I think. There's 2 very gnarled roots, that stick up and are pretty much exactly 45 degrees to the trail. There's a tree on your left, and it goes into a left hand turn after it.
It's a shame! Haha, it's been there forever, all the bark has been worn off it for years and there's always been some tire rubber left on it.

if all the barks been worn off it, it is already dead

that is incorrect, cork trees are harvested for their cork(bark) after 40 years of life and then each 20 years after. loss of bark will not neccesarily kill a tree, but it does make it more likely to get hurt by passing bikers.

I says pardon. Under the bark is the cambium, the living part of the tree. The cambium is sandwiched between the bark and the wood of the tree. The bark on the outside of the cambium, and the wood on the inside of the cambium, are essentially 'dead'. If you remove the cambium around the stem/root, ie down to bare wood, the tree/root will die. This is why girdling trees by tying a rope around them etc kills them, because the cambium becomes damaged.
Not sure about harvesting cork trees, but I am thinking that only the outer layers bark are removed, and the cambium remains intact. But what do I know, I'm just a forester.
