Just rode Lower Snake last night - there was some additional work done on the weekend including a new raised ladder, insanely solid stuff. I nearly fell off my bike when it was pointed out that the cross-supports weren't just whacked together, but were mortised! For the upright supports, it look like they dug down until they reached bedrock. This thing will survive longer than most of the people riding it.

That's what happens when a construction foreman joins the trail crew.... :D

Rumor has it there is still more work to be done. It hopefully will become a nice alternate/addition to the traditional loop down Nicoles.

Upper Snake could really use some work, it's all loose topsoil and would benefit from some stonework to keep the dirt in place.

That's the SFU trail. I liked the end the way it was, you could rip down and get a nice little jump over the sidewalk. Now it's been filled in with gravel.

The BMBA met with the contractor that was doing that work and they never mentioned putting stairs in at the end of upper mels. It was a complete surprise to us as well. Apparently the contractor was instructed by higher ups at SFU to put stairs in.

Truthfully, the old exit was an eroded mess and an eyesore from the road.

aparrently it was also about drainage i think and there was something about the sidewalk i can't remember what they said but go to www.bmba.ca and they have somegood info about the stairs. The BMBA wants more peoples input on the mountain as well

One set of ladders put in on lower snake has been ripped out and thrown to the side. Not sure who would do this as the structure was very solid, safe and even had a easy line to go around. This is not the first time damage has been done to the trail.

Ladder has been repaired. If anyone notices any more damage to this trail or any others on Bby Mnt please post a note on bmba.ca.

The fallen tree is on Nicoles. It wasn't there Sunday, but was on Monday. It's on the left handed ladder corner just before the 'steepish' right corner(with ladder) that can also be dropped into(2-3 footer) just before the corner... not too far from the pole.

I can easily catch you off guard if you are carrying any sort of speed.

Burnaby found out about the recent work on lower snake and hd a meeting with the Bmba types. They let it be known they are unhappy with the work.

Oh no! That sucks! I've found SFU to be very helpful in my quest to improve...

Why? It all seemed really well built and safe. Most of it was only maybe a foot off the ground. I assumed it was "approved"

did BMBA do the work? i thought it was the city guy who does most of the building...?

personally, i preferred Lower Snake before it was stunted ... i realize they can all be ridden around, so it's not bad. i just thought there was enough low wood work on the other trails near the bottom...

There are a few groups out there doing work, none of them under the banner of the BMBA.

The City isn't really all that concerned that what has been built is unsafe - their issue is that woodwork is popping up without their prior knowledge, and they are nervous about it becoming a free-for-all over which they have no control. They want to maintain the existing character of the mountain and to make trail improvements in a planned way.

Now would be a good time for anyone doing trailwork on the mountain to lay low. The BMBA is in the first stages of negotiating an approval process with the City for trail improvements and looking at options for how the work gets done.

gazz, thx for the update.

i assumed it was the city guy, or was approved by the city, because i've seen the printed sign at the start of the trail that looked on the level ...
