I weigh 170 naked ( :agree: ) maybe 180 all-geared up. So, what is the correct spring to use? 500lb?

Depends entirely on the bike. Different suspension designs behave differently, and leverage ratios will require different spring weights.

2005 Santa Cruz V-10. Travel is 10" Stroke ? No idea.

I think it's a 3" stroke shock on that bike. If it is indeed a 3" stroke shock then I would recommend a 550 pound coil. The basic formula you can use is as follows:
your weight/frame travel = coil weight/shock stroke
Again, like Corey says every shock and frame behaves very differently so this is a VERY rough guide only to get you started... I would recommend asking other V10 owners of similar weight what they use...

I just called Fox Racing Shock and they too confirmed that the 500lb spring is correct or even the 550.

I would be interested to feel what it is like with the DHX. When I had the previous V10 (2003) I ran a 450 and I outweigh Brent by 30 lbs.
The formula seems strange. Correct me if I am wrong, but if I had a v10 (2003) with 10 inches of travel and I wieghed 200lbs and the stroke on the v10 (5th) was 2.75"
would I not need a 730lbs spring ?
Remember Brent that the VPP is designed to sit in it's sag. There should be roughly 4 inches of sag on the bike. (40%) due to it's Downhill and VPP design. Make sure you can get 40% sag from eye to eye on the shock with a 500lbs spring.
I am assuming when you spoke to fox that you told them it was a V10 and how much you weighed.
When I check TFTunedshox.com (Tim Flooks website [World cup tuner]) His recommendation to get 33% sag on your rig with your weight for a fox is a 420lbs spring.
I would say that a 400 - 450lbs spring would be a better set up, but that is just me.
Phone Jamie Wakeling at Steed he runs a new V10 and is close to your weight.

I did tell Fox what bike it was for and what I weigh. I also talked to Jamie at Steed and he weighs 170/175 and runs a 500lbs spring and he tells me that it feels slightly oversprung. He thinks a 450 would be perfect.
However, he also says that he IS getting the 40% sag while running the 500lbs spring.
So WTF? I guess I'll try the 500lbs spring for a run and try to determine what's what.

Sounds like the fox is softer than the 5th. Giver at 500 and see what happens. With the chamber control you should be able to stop bottom outs, if the spring is too soft.
Better a bit soft than too firm. The bike is designed to ride soft in it's Sag.
Just might be a tad hard to jump. If the bike feels hard to jump, you can increase the air pressure by 20 lbs.
I used to switch back and forth for Whistler and shore. I would run 90-100lbs on the shore and 120 at whistler for A-Line pop.

I have also learned that the stroke is 2.80 on my DHX. TFtunedshox.com suggests a 500lbs spring for my weight and rear travel.

I have a question with this shox, what spring should I run with a 2005 rmx (R2) if i'm 170lbs. I don't know what the strock for now.

Weight = 225LB, no gear.
Bike = Single pivot PEELER
Spring = 500 LB
Stroke = 3.25
Travel = 225MM
Going to a 450 because currently only getting about 15MM of sag with the pre load pretty much all the way off.

Hey Jay, I was thinking abomut what is wrong with the equation and I realized that I put the reverse pairs. It's:
your weight/shock stroke = coil weight/bike travel
But that still comes out to 700 lbs coil so maybe the equation is useless. Never mind...
