View Full Version : Avid Juicy Five - good choice?
Just wondering - I am told the Fives are actually the Sevens w/out the dial - any Fives owners out there who could give me some feedback? Fives can be had for so much cheaper than the Sevens...
the 5's also lack teh split perch mounting system of the 7's...
so taking em off your bars is a bit more of a hassle aswell...
for me the pad engagement knob is worth teh extra cost alone...
but otherwise the 5's are VERY similar in every other aspect...
you'll def be happy on the 5's.

How long have you had them - any issues/problems? I am getting them with 8" rotors front and back - need some serious stopping power - 200 lbs w/gear.

I run the Juicy 5s on my xc bike. They're so good that I'll be getting some more Avid brakes for my trail bike in the near future. Don't hesitate to make the leap if you don't have the cash for the Juicy 7s.

The 5's are awesome - just like the 7's except the dial. You'll be happy. The dial is great and I love the fact that I have it, but the 5's are as good in the quality/stopping areas as the 7's.

i love the 5s, i'm never going back to hayes. mine make a weird vibrating noise, but there's nothing wrong with the stopping power - a couple buddies rode my bike and almost went over the bars  i have no problems modulating them though.

Had XT's and Hayes.... Avids are way more powerful and have a better feel to them IMO. Believe the hype.

HAHAHA....I had XT's and they were POOOOOOOP. No matter who I had bleed them they just could not stop me, and I had multiple other people tell me that mine sucked. Maybe I had a bad set, but they blew.
I need to upgrade and would love either the 5's or the 7's...mmmMMMmmm...sexy brakes.

I'm not 100% certain of that. I have sevens and they don't have the split mount, which actually makes me happy. They are a little harder to remove, but they are a lot more stable on the bar

that's the rotor i have. other people have heard the noise and while they say it's a bit loud, they also say its fairly normal for brakes to make a noise. on the one hand it's likely a good thing since it reminds me to feather them.
a buddy has hopes and said his make the same noise, just not as loud

The latest Seven's do not have the split clamp. I wish they did.

Interestingly enough, I am on Hopes and not wishing I was on anything else... However, the Avids do have a great feel and I have yet to hear anything bad about them from people (that I know) who run them.

For the price I don't think you can beat the Juicy Fives for power, etc. I just put a set on a couple of weeks ago and love them. I'd love something like the hopes, but for me I just can't justify the cost. My Juicy fives will send me over the handle bars with a one finger pull.

really ??? ugh that suks...
split perch roks the house i wonder why they changed it...

my rear brakes make that noise too, i find its awsome cause i hate hearing that noize while im riding so i find it keeps me off the brakes more, which is good cause im damn slow, it also has let me know that even when i think im off the brakes im really not.

Power isn't so dependent on the brake, but rather the pads and rotors. Modulation depends on the brake itself...

so, 5 or 7? final decision?
Well, just got'em - awesome power, setup is a breeze, they set up nicely on the first try. The stopping power is awesome, and they're not even broken-in yet - could do nose-wheelies in my back lane, which I never managed before. A little noisy at first, but will see after some use - maybe I will just have to dremel the edges on the polygon bumps (worked for my buddy, quieted the howl). For $109US a wheel (203 mm rotors), I just couldn't resist. And they look pimp to boot...
