Question for anyone involved in organizing this and the Rippers.
Is the insurance I bought for the Rippers good for this race or do I need to buy a one race insurance thingy for?
Thanks.

I rode the course on July 1, 2005. No real changes from last year.........?yet?
I hate to say it, but to be honest the course is not in good shape. There are lots of wet spots, and the new dirt that is in place is not getting hard at all.
The course had been worked on from the bottom to the second set of doubles. (the new ones put in for last years race).
It needs a ton of work to be prepared for this years race. I hope there is time for the course to get completed (buffed) and I really hope the weather warms up to dry the course and harden the dirt everywhere.

no, the rippers are club events and bear is a BC cup. you will need a UCI license, (or one day $10) to race

dono.. but the nearest hotel is bookkkked
There's a little bit of camping at the site - but not a lot, you'd have to get there early. The web site says that they will have info up at the race site.
The Rolley Lake Provincial campsite is only about a 15 minute drive away on the other side of the dam. It might be an idea to call to see if you need reservations. If you're going there just remember it's NOT on Rolley Lake Road, it's on Bell Road.

I hiked the dh course today, it's in really good shape. The work has been continued up to almost the top and all of the jumps have been touched up. The only new feature is a short ways above the angled rock face, where a small jump has been made at a spot where there is a right and left line on either side of a tree, so there is a roll/jump option. The jump is on the right hand line. A guy I ran into out there said that he thought one of the doubles below the angled rock face had been made a bit longer, but not having been out there for some time, I couldn't say for sure. The dirt in the berms seems to have packed in nicely in most spots.
There's only one or two muddy areas despite the rain we've been having, and even then they are minor. The upper part of the course has seen the most change, it's been groomed a lot through the (formerly) loose rocky section. I expect times for the dh this year will be much faster than in past years as a result of the new work.
Should be a good event.

The downhill race had great weather! Congratulations to:
Stacey Kohut, 1st in the 4-wheel;
Andrew Mitchell, 1st in pro men with the fastest time of the day at 3:41:59;
Danika Schroeter, who won the pro women category by 26 seconds!;
Eric Anderson, and Rob Elliot, 1st and 2nd in Master Expert with times of 4:06:46 and 4:06:58 respectively. Both were volunteers at the event all weekend, as well as putting in time working on the trail before the race;
Race organizer Cory Adsit, 4th in Master Expert;
Todd Kaulbeck, who also volunteered the whole weekend and put in a lot of time working on the course prior to the race, winning Master Sport;
thedude, who also put in a really fast time in Master Sport - less than 2 seconds behind the top spot, if I'm not mistaken. Nice to be able to put faces to some names finally!
One thing that I noticed about this race was how much everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. I didn't hear anyone whine or complain about anything much all weekend. The event went well, despite the three drunk guys with a cooler who didn't get off the course in time during one of the pro's runs, causing him to have to re-do his run. It's my understanding that some other spectators were able to identify the guys and gave that info to the organizer.
Rant for the day: If you're planning on spectating at an event remember that course marshals can only do so much to let you know what's going on, because they are tied to a specific location. As a spectator you need to pay attention to what's going on around you, respect the racers and stay off the track! If you're on foot, hiking through the bush for a short distance won't kill you and it's safer for everyone.

Fun course to ride, not my best race course that's for sure. I blew a bunch of corners (where did the berms go?) and was sketchy up top (probably from the Black Flag playing in my ear), but rode pretty good through the bottom. Tough competition in the beer league Master Expert class today.

That was a fun race. The course was a rollercoaster! I second the comment someone made earlier that it seemed everyone had a smile on their faces. Huge turn out and lots of fast guys / gals. Andrew Mitchells 3:41 and Danika throwing down a 4:16 was unreal. Master Expert was tight ... you guys are going to have a good race in Sun Peaks. Cheers to all of those that organized the event, sweet course, tape was up early, weather was perfect for Saturday / Sunday. If only we could make those Budget Vans covertible!

I heard that too, but it's also only the ninth year and someone said he had wanted to do 10 ...as with all rumours, I think the only thing we can do is wait and see what happens in the spring when they schedule things. After all, it took Cory about 3 years of talking about it to change from Pro to Master Expert... ;)
Also in the news, Tig (Ten36 Timing) is moving on after this year. He's going to Ontario or some such thing. Hope the next guys do as good of a job.

If only we could make those Budget Vans covertible!
bingo, i felt sick every time i was in one
the whole experience was great. the shuttling was very lame but apparently also partly due to a big last minute signup so they didn't know how many trucks to get. for a race that's so expensive, the shuttling is a big let-down. oh well, otherwise everything else about day was very positive and i had a blast.
i was the one who witnessed the jackass move of the day with the red cooler boyz. they were walking three-wide down the middle of the course in the middle of the pro runs, totally hammered and oblivious to the world around them. rider cam burning down towards them screaming his head off and they didn't even react. the guy got a rerun and justice was partially done because he layed two of the guys out going probably 40-50km/hr. he absolutely smoked them.
the cooler boys were later heard saying "everyone at the bottom is probably going to hate us if we go down there". yup, got that right.

So if shuttle trucks are so lame how come 275 of you raced? You knew that was what you get at Bear.
Funny that, everyone complained about dust, shuttle trucks and the tame pedalling course at Campbell Mtn but we always got 300 or so for the DH. Looking at the numbers over the years, one would have to conclude that racers prefer shuttle trucks to chairlifts...

I know people hate shuttle trucks and pedalling sections in DH courses, but why did those 2 races get such big turnouts? I always figured our big numbers at Campbell were mainly due to early season event and being on a long weekend. Anyone else want to comment? That course is done now anyway.

Off the top of my head, they're both easy to get to, less expensive because they aren't at a ski resort - accommodation, food, bike repairs are all generally cheaper outside of a resort - and the courses are both really good for people trying out the race thing, non-threatening and approachable.
I'm not sure if Campbell Mountain was open for public use before the race, but anyone can go practice Bear at any time of the year, no buying a lift ticket required, so there's lots of opportunity for riders to get it dialed and maybe feel more confident about entering the race without having to spend a fortune before even entering.
The shuttle trucks are kind of a rite of passage, you haven't raced until you've ridden in a budget truck. Penticton was my first race - I will always remember my chain jamming right in front of Brad and having to listen to his "colour commentary" about me while two people passed me and I frantically tried to get my chain unstuck...! :| I had NO idea what I was doing, and I still survived and had a great time. Even though I did come dead last. :D

For my second year at Bear, all I can say is " faaacuckking awesome". This year I made it through to the finish at least. As for the cooler boyz, I as well almost took them out just below the first sharp left turn. They looked like 3 litlle squirrels ducking for cover as I came towards them, screaming at the top of my lungs.BUT, they cheered for me when I got through them.Thanks guys.
The shuttles were half the fun of the whole weekend.. I mostly felt like a pig being driven to the slaughter house. What a blast!!!! As for riders whining about not being dropped by th shuttle at the top I say "suck it up"
I really hope Cory pulls it off again next year, cuz I will def. be signing up a.s.a.p.

Thanks.
It's dark as heck under those trees and there isn't much room to move around without leaves and branches getting in the way.
I had to shoot manual exposure and try to balance the ambient light with the flash. I couldn't get enough shutter speed to 'freeze' the background, which is why almost every shot is "panned"... sucks, but I didn't have much choice.
All things considered, I'm fairly happy with how they turned out, although I missed riding the race
