Check out the Grand Opening of The Ranch. Huge props to the city of Kamloops for coming to the table and providing a A+ place for all to ride. The Jump Park rocks, flowy DH trails and 23 hectares of heaven.

Hope to see a lot of riders there for the opening weekend. July 2nd and 3rd.

The XC trails are not in yet so the only way to the top is a shuttle up Juniper. The BMX Track is at the top and the DH runs join it to the Jump Park. We are trying to set up some free shuttles for the opening weekend but don't know if it's going to happen.

OHMYGOD. I think I need to change my pants....there's something gooey in there.
I have never seen more beautifully sculpted tables, ever. They look so perfect.
I'll probably come up in september sometime, and I'm sure by then all the little improvements and tweaks will be made.
Damn! I thought the loops was already pretty sick.

How much does it cost to ride there? and How many DH trails do they have right now?

My Dad's g/f lives like a 5 minute bike ride from Juniper so I definately want to check that out!
scott@nsmb.com
06-15-2005, 05:38 PM
It's a city park so no harm in directions. Turn off the highway onto Highland Drive (Valleyview) up two blocks and your there. It's right in the valley before the Valleyview Arena. DJ park at the bottom (Valleyview), BMX at the top (Juniper). We are not open till July 2nd, so please don't poach the trails or jumps. There will be signage and directions posted around the city. Right now we are trying to shape and get as much water as possible on them. The DH trail has 35 plus jumps, enough to put a shit eating grin on your face.

I saw in the article that you are working on dust control.....
Dolemite or Lime work well.
On another note, how is it that the Loops can muster up the courage to put a bike park in another "fragile environment" but Fromme....a 2nd growth logged out waste land, complete with debris and machinery left behing from the logging days,is such a touchy subject?

Mildest winter? I don't think so. We get cold snaps of -20 to -30 a couple times a winter regularly.

Oh no, not -20 or -30!!! What will we do? And its for maybe a day or two. Try 3 months at -30 and a couple months at -40+. I lived in Saskatchewan basically all my life until I wised up 4 years ago. I will agree fully with the statement of mild winters.

Hmm.. that last few winters have been fairly cold. I guess it's all perspective, my relatives are all in Victoria, so I think there is a mild winter compared to here, coming home at Christmas from there.

I'll second that. Having come from a small town, then to the city, you start to realize how unrealistic and out of touch many people in the city actually are. Derwood you're completely right about Fromme - it does not make sense. Fun can be a taboo sometimes.

Water lines are in for the BMX track as we speak. We are using a temporary system for the downhill, gravity feed with 7 containers and a complete sprinkler system by Toro. The new system for the DH tracks will go in mid summer and then park will be watered nightly.
The Bmx course is getting the finishing touches this week from Cycling B.C.
Parking lots on the top and bottom have started construction this week by the wonderfull City of Kamloops.
Trying to put it all together for the opening weekend.

I'd say most of our Fromme issues are due to EC and MC....
With the current issues "The Shore" is facing, more and more people are going to be travelling elsewhere.
Issues = parking, paving of trails, de-constuction of trails and no new trails.

Scott: how did this all come together? Was there much municipal support? Whose land is it on? Some info might be useful in support of our cause locally!

lignin sulffonate is a natural dust suppressant they use on gravel roads, its basicly tree sap works quite well I understand. I gave a can of it to loopy a couple years ago, he was going to give it a try on some jumps

Scott: how did this all come together? Was there much municipal support? Whose land is it on? Some info might be useful in support of our cause locally!-
It originally started in 2002 with the KMBA Kamloops Mountain Biking Association), in 2004 the City of Kamloops approved The Kamloops Mountain Bike Park. In Feb 2005 the KMBA and the KBMXRA amalgamated forming the KBRA Kamloops Bike Riders Association. The KBRA forms the primary community partner in the developmoent of the Kamloops Bike Park and operates in accordance with the Bike Park Management Plan. The parks development is planned over three phases with a 50/50 cost share agreement with the KBRA on all capital improvements. There's a 70 page report out on the management plan that we should have copies available in the next month. Pm me if you want one. In the very near future this will also be available of the City of Kamloops web site.
The KBRA has leased the land, 23 hectares, from the City and one private orginization for a period of 35 years. The biggest hurdles were getting park layout, features, development and partnerships approved by the city.
The next hurdle was the enviromental one, enviromental principals, park protection, sensitive sites, sustainability, weed controll and the Valleyview Nature Park.
Because of huge liability issues for the City of Kamloops everything has to be built to IMBA and Whistler Trail Standards. The BMX track is being built to CCA sanctioned standards under development and support from Cycling B.C.
Our mission statement is to provide Kamloops with a cutting edge, premier mountain bike and BMX riding facility.

Thanks Scott...wow that is really cool that something like this can be accomplished with city and community support. I'll be looking for that report on the website. One question: was there any strong vocal oppostion to the plan? I'm wondering how you dealt with the likes of the opposition faced here on the North Shore?
