View Full Version : 4x rules
Im heading out to panorama for the BC cup and am competing in DH and 4X. I was wondering if anyone could give me a link to the rules of 4X and if front brakes are required, same with gears. Thanks.
CCA rules say for mountain bike events the bicycle must have two brakes, front and rear, which are in good working condition. So far I haven't found any mention of gears, but I will check on that.

Dano, 4X is for mtn bikes not BMX bikes. You will get some serious attitude from the other riders if you show up on BMX bike. Some pretty fast BMX guys like Adam Muys and Tyler Clarke have raced at BC Cup 4X in the last few years and they use mtbs because they respect the sport. They are still very fast anyway!
Aside from that, Pano is a really steep course by 4X standards and you will need good brakes to bleed off speed going into the bigger hits. Several injuries there in the past because of guys sailing past the tranny and casing harsh. Not really a pedalling course.

No no, its not a bmx! My hardtail just has a single brake and one gear.Because i just dont have enough funds to be replacing derailleurs and spokes. Ill be putting on a front brake but wasnt going to if i didnt have to. I've ridden the track before, i was just wondering if it was mandatory. I dont bmx. Thanks for the info anyways!
what about a 24" bmx with moutain bike parts, front and rear breaks, 3" fork, but still single speed. would i be able to race that in 4x.

Technically yes you can ride it. The rules are very basic - working front and rear brake is about it. Multiple gears not necessary, suspension not necessary either. No minimum wheel size.
For a flatter "hole shot" course where a good gate is key, single speed is an advantage off the line - provided you got the gearing right of course. But at Pano there are passing opportunities and the course is so steep you need to touch the brakes going into several of the bigger hits, so not much advantage to be had. More travel would be more useful. But... you will most definitely get the hairy eyeball from other riders if you bring something that looks like a BMX...
