Anyone got a chain saw that lives in poco and that can get to burke easily? CHAINSAWS are the best:D :D :D So much easier then a normal saw and much more fun ahahaha
Rocks aren't necessarily needed for the entire length. If the drainage (slope to side) is sufficient, non-organic dirt will do just fine. As long people aren'tcreating resistence by braking and skidding out of control, the dirt doesn't get eroded much either.
You cannot tell me that Flywheel does not have dirt, especially that section.

I suggest we just raise the whole thing with water channels at the side like BURKE PHANTOMS said. Ladders should be the second option for those parts of Flywheel.

not dis agreeing with u but latters have tons of flow..if u have ever ridden on the shore u woudl know how flowy ladders can b...just keep the rungs close together and they flow like madd...ladders r used everywhere on the shore..i think rocks r beeter for ressisting erosing.

To me there are 2 options: ladders and not ladders. (The third, "fuck it", isn't considered building at all)
The log to the side does pose problems, but if we could have a water bar on the upmountain side of the trail, with the trail slope leading into it (also creating marginal berm effect) and two short lengths of some pipe buried under the trail to get that water into the forest.

Don't worry man, I've seen the awesome work on pangor, ladders can be flowy, but still... your BMX track is made of dirt.

oic...the only trhing i can think of is the problem of when it rains up there...that hole is full of water when it rains so we talking a crap load oif racks here if were gonna raise it that much

I say where the log is if its such a problem bring a saw and cut it away and through it into the bush or something. then u can buoid some nice berms around the corners with a ladder between the burn so it flow nicely. like in atns diagram but burms wher ehe said but put a nice ladder inbetween and nice close rungs together so it flows nicly, if u put rocks between the berms it will be bumby but if u put a ladder it will be a nice fast part with flow

if u do rocks rite they can be smooth..for example upper oil can on fromme is rock work pretty much all the way down...i th9ink on the first pic we can put a burmup beside the logand rocks on the inside

04-23-2003, 10:25 PM
ya the rock work on flywheel is pretty crappy
As I have said before, we don't actually need rocks if we have non organic soil with a slope for drainage. Non organic is the gold dirt that packs real nice. It won't see much wear if the corner after it is smooth and people don't jab the brakes on before it (while on the straight).
The log is actally going to help us, only a couple spaces will need to go to get the pipes thru. it's rotten so a moddock would make quick work of it.
The pipes should be maybe 10cm diameter, 4 feet long, PVC? Shouldn't be more than 5-10 bucks for the pair I hope.

Exactly. Newb trail to the maximum. We need much better rocks and better work too. Some day we should organize a local trail day for Flywheel, maybe this weekend if weather permits.

Agreed.
And yes, Flywheel is a beginner trail, and is going to get shitkicked one way or another.

I am aware of that.
I do think though, that if someone new to the sport gets on a section that is smooth, they feel fast, and they don't fight it. The section isn't that steep... they will definately have slowed down by the flat.
Also, say you rock the flat... new riders will come down the berm, going a bit faster then usual, see rocks, get scared, and tear up the berm. We'd have to pave the whole trail.

Why not try both methods at different points in the trail. I like ATN's idea re: using non organic dirt. That area could be framed and drainage could be set up. Once done a hole could be dug close to the trail to access that nice gold dirt. I don't think that would be terribly hard, just ime consuming. The other way to do it would be to build a banked wide ladder with rungs spaced as close as possible. Properly built this would not disturb flow. Soon enough we will have new trail that exhibits both of these styles of building.
I agree with you PHANTOMS, but currently I do not know how to procure rungs of that length.
BURKE PHANTOMS
04-24-2003, 09:56 AM
You need the fro tool. We measure rungs the legth of our fingers to shoulder. The fro allows easy splitting of these legths of wood. Using this method you can build a very effective and strong wood berm. You could also use the wood to build walls to support dirt berms. Just remember to leave drain holes in the wood to allow water to escape. The fro is a 12" wide blade that has a quarter of a fence post on the side that is used as a striking block for the back of an axe.

What are you guys talking about??? This is not a chat session. If it there is nothing relevant to add, don't post to this thread. The more crap that gets built right off of harper the more all of the trails will be in jeopardy. If people are to lazy to hike past the gate then don't build on the mountain. Our group as well as many others have invested to much time and effort into making Burke a fun and well designed destination for all types of riders. If I sound pissed it's because I get an email that lets me know that someone posted to the thread. It is really dissapointing to find three word dribble when you are looking to interact with others who share a common goal. I agree. Some of you guys are posting 2-3 even 4 posts when all you need is one. Think before you post something. Maybe you want to add to that? Just don't make a post for every sentence you think of, combine them and make one post. You'll notice the last 30 pages of this thread are pretty useless. So go back. Read through your posts and delete what's unneeded. Please.

Me and Dion did it Saturday. We were riding up from the gate and saw 5-7 people riding down, skipping Galloway, scaring us. It was also pissing rain then. Once we got on the trail the rain stopped, and we stopped to rock 2 sections, altho we didn't have any tools so I guess we gotta go do the gold...
Those two rock sections, after the first creek bridge, after the flat after that, at the place where there are 3 lines going through a hollow tree.... were they still there? Were the upper 2 lines still blocked?
BTW evan, it is to a certain degree, but the threads will be more effiecient this way I hope. if you had a s2 thread to begin with, with you like me to come in and say how bad the trails are and that people with rear brake only are chewing them up?

We are not the leaders of anything, we are only trying to be constructive. ATN is one of the only people on this thread who puts his money where his mouth is. This is a free thread and site, anyone can participate. It is my hope that if you do want to be involved that you restrict your comments to the mountain and how we can make it bigger and better. As for dirt jumps I am all for them, in fact we hope to put some step downs on our trails. We are still going to keep the integrity of the trail though. Like I said it is actually pretty simple, this thread is a discussion about trail maintenance and building lets all keep it that way.

Let's keep it to the trails. Pure dirt jump areas can have their own thread. If you dig dj's more than trail rides thats cool. Everything contributes to the building styles of new trails. Three years ago step downs and gaps were rarely seen on trails. I that I want is for this thread to either get focused or not get used. There has to be chat areas in other venues that could be used
