View Full Version : Need help jumping
Last year on A-line I went nose heavy on a tranny and really messed up my body. My problem is that when I jump anything with a lip my back wheel kicks up. Should I pull up or should I ride like I'm riding through the lip. Any help would be seriously appreciated as I'll be up there again in July and I don't want to donate any more money to the medical clinic, not that they didn't do a good job I'd just rather by more beer than pain killers. Thanks again!

try like pre loading at the bottom of the jump and when u near the top of the liptry to pull up or hop off the lip maybe......not sure if that helps because its hard to teach ppl how to jump but maybe someone else can explain better...
Just try to relax. Usually the back kicks up if you're too stiff.

if i'm having that problem i try to pull up off the lip and tuck a bit, then if i'm going in nose heavy i push down with my legs, hopefully leveling the bike
not sure what to suggest

If you watch people riding the lipped jumps, their legs are bent, any kick up gets absorbed and it projects them in the right path the land right. At least thats what I have noticed.

it could possibly have somethign to do with your front fork rebound being a lot slower than your rear shock rebound..... if the rear shock's rebound is really fast then it can buck you your rear end up like you were saying....

Pull up more than you do now.....and from what I remember you tend to sit back in the bike a bit when jumping, which makes it hard to pull up the front, then kicks the back tire up when you hit the lip.
I might be remembering wrong though.......gotta get back to work.

your rear rebound could be way too fast, that happened to me with fast rebound i couldnt figure out why i kept nosing in,

are you leaning forward?
Slow the rebound on your rear shock.
I've got the rebound set pretty slow for fear of getting bucked on step down jumps. I think the problem is body position/technique.

Goto your local bmx track and learn to jump those. Once you get flowing it aline will be simple.

sounds like you are too tense, relax a bit.
Probably the best tip is to start small like someone else had suggested. Pick 2 or 3 jumps on A-line that wont kill you if you nosed it and practice on those on each run. Remember to keep the upper body relax because I've seen alot of dead sailor when you're upper body is tense.

I notice that people don't stand up high enough on their bikes, use all your legs and knees to move the bike around, you are the master of that machine so look like it, move around on it make it your bitch, and yes dead sailors are scary to watch, it looks like they might bail at any moment....

Dude, I have the exact same problem, and i know its from not being relaxed enough, I've had some bad slaps off jumps, so every time I approch a big kicker, I tense up a bit. I know I tense up cause I can feel it in my head, as I get up the face of the kicker, I can feel the fear of falling again and then I dead sailor, yet on smaller stunts or jumps, I am not scared or nerevous, and therefore have no problems. So all I can say is start small, and practice a bunch until the big ones don't scare you any more.
I've been hitting the jump park off Grand Boulevard and 11th, the ones to the south in the woods are just about right to hit without being intimidated.
I want to be able to hit A--line with confidence this summer.
There was another thread about slow people on A-line, I am a culpret here too. but dudes, I'm trying to go as fast as I can. Cut a guy some slack, we all ahve to learn somewhere

There's some jumps on there that just naturally have a lot of kick to em. I know I've been the target of some of them myself, and I'd consider myself a very competent jumper.
The best thing to do is take your bike to the local dirtjumps and learn the basics there, it'll help you big time. I'm always way more paranoid at Whistler than I am at my local jumps, you're moving SO much faster, bails have huge consequences.

Go find a coach that can teach jumping. There are more then a few things that can mess you up on the take off and having someone with a good eye correct them for you is worth it. Jumping is all about balance, timing and being relaxed. Having someone watch you or better yet video you, will find your issue quicker.
Telling you how to fix your jumping without seeing what's wrong is dangerous.

I decided to take that word out because I didn't want to sound too argumentative.
No, I don't care if people learn from me or us. I just want them to learn without too much pain so they can enjoy the sport. I normally stay out of the "how do I do this" threads because of my bias, but doing jumps wrong can result in some serious downtime.

Talk to some of the guides at Whistler Bike Park and they will let you know who the best coach is for jumping. There are a few that know their shit. One thing is to be a good jumper and another is to be able to teach it. They will help you set up you bike as well. I used to be in the clinic all the time and then I took Schley Camp and have not been in the clinic for 4 yrs.
