View Full Version : Synchro and the new Corkscrew

I've had the same conversation with about, oh I don't know, EVERYBODY on Seymour lately.
What's up with Synchro and the Corkscrew extension?
True to form, when the personal life is on the rocks, the trail work fairly flies along. But when some new pirate treasure (ie. booty) comes into the picture, work pretty much stops.
I propose that Mark be CUT OFF from all further contact with members of the opposite sex until his trail is open to riding. Alternatively, allow a few responsible individuals to finish the joey lines around the big stuff so that it can be ridden.

he told me about this time last year when I was giving him a hand that it would only take him 3 more weeks. I had a laugh to myself back then, but it ain't funny no mo. going into its 3rd year.

Mark should be fitted with a male chastity belt or a deal should be struck with his fiance that unless he can provide up to date proof of work completed she must with-hold bedroom activities.

yeah, i've spent time getting her place ready for sale and now this weekend i'll be starting on the new one. i have been doing some work up there tho and the alternate line across the first log is done. the wedges to get you past the trees on the first log ride are also done. and i have had a helper giving me a hand every once in a while - thanks doug. i'm takin 6wks away from work so i should be able to slip out for a day or two to get some more work done.
soon boys, soon.

also, these past two weeks were suposed to see a big push to get it rideable, but i've been laid up with the flu. now that the flu is gone the antibiotics are suckin the life outta me. i'm hopin i can still make to the trail day this sunday. i may just have to sit back in a lawn chair with a beer to direct the work.
shit man, i've had the flu too, and so did my gf. then my son had it wicked over the weekend - puked up blood and i took him to emerg. docs thought he had meningitus but tests were negative thankfully. he's doing better now but that flu is brutal. it sucks because it lingers. i'm still feeling the effects almost two weeks later.
shity, did the doctor take fluid outta the back of your son? they did that to me and it was probably one of the more uncomfortable things ever.

ya spinal taps suck. especially for little kids. i've had 5 (menangitis 3x) and it's way worse once you know how much it's going to hurt. my dr tells me it's like a tea party compared to the angiograph that i'm supposed to have though.
back to the topic... mark finish your f***ing trail please. :)

Why not have a trail day to finish it?
probably less "moving big rocks work" and more "moving big rocks and decision making work" left ?

Due to the amount of interest in this trail a trail day would be a great idea. There should be no problem getting alot of people out as we are all excited to ride this new line.

haha good question. Depends on how many knuckle brake draggers ride it. My bet is 1 - 2 months but i do think the reason its taking so long is that mark is trying to idiot-proof the trail

[QUOTE=NooNer]how long will it take before its shitkicked like cbc?QUOTE]
People are always bitching about the condition of CBC. There are many other trails on the North Shore that see much less traffic than CBC and are in much worse condition. I believe that people rant about CBC just because it is a popular line and they feel it's cool to go against the grain of the masses. This is by no means a personal attack on NooNer but considering CBC is aurguably the most ridden trail on the Shore, it is in fairly good condition. I'm just saying that instead of whining about trail conditions let's look at the positive side like the sections of CBC that have had thousands of riders on them and are still kicking ass.

was on the trail today and tried to do some work by osmosis. i laid down in the sun, stared up at the sky and the trees and dreampt about the wallride. very trippy i may add. i think a few rocks moved a bit when i laid down, but that's about it. hopefully i can accomplish more tomorrow.
haha the shuttlers can have seymour. men will ride elsewhere ;) :D
ps: can't wait to see the new trail mark. will be worth a climb up the highway. oh god, i'm due for camelbacks of beer ride up there with putty.

Mark - What's happening with the trail?....gotta be honest with you I walked down it last weekend and was pretty dissapointed to see no work has been happening. I'm not trying to piss you off....good on you for taking the initiative to START building it - but it has been what 2+yrs now? Can you not put together a day or two to get the groundwork finished up so the trail can be ridden? It's so close to being rideable on the ground and the stunts can be completed afterwords. I know you are busy with other things in life but you started this thing and it needs to be finished! Reading this thread it sounds like there is a lot of interest out there so maybe a few trail days could get this thing open. I know this trail has been your "baby" all along but it's time to admit you need some help and just get it rideable. Take it or leave it - those are my thoughts. (p.s. If you hold a trail day on a weekend over the next month or so - I'll be there. I wouldn't feel right about bitching without offering to help out myself)

Mark is balls deep into a home renovation as we speak. He needs to get his new house liveable in a very short amount of time. I've seen what he's doing and he's definately got his work cut out for himself. It's unfortunate, but sometimes real life has to take priority over recreational time. I don't know what everyone is bitching about, pretend like it's not there. It's not like a trail has been closed. It's never been open. Just ride like you have been every single other time down Seymour.

problem is he was given permission to build that trail to take bike traffic off incline which is a hiking only trail. if this isn't happening it makes us look bad. there have been posts about bikers taking out hikers on incline (i'm sure we don't hear about most of it but you can be sure somebody does) and it would be nice if that could stop. mark there have been a TON of offers to help if you don't have the time to finish it yourself. plus it's just plain mean to keep people waiting another year. :P

Dave - I absolutely understand that there are sometimes things in life that can interefere with building. I also respect the fact that Mark has a new priority in his house. Mark has committed a HUGE amount of time to the trail already and I thank him for that. The quality of construction in all of the structures he's built is amazing (and very time consuming). The fact is though that there was a commitment made to the LSCR to build this trail. That commitment hasn't been fulfilled. I believe that the trail could be rideable early this summer if the groundwork is made the priority. It sounds like there are many people out there willing to lend a hand - so opening the trail (minus alot of the stunts) early this summer could be a reality. For this to happen though somebody (the trailbuilder) needs to step up to the plate and ask for some help. Until that time the chances of the trail getting done this season are slim to none. Let's all try to support Mark and encourage/empower him to utilize our enthusiasm to get that thing open!

i know you mean well.
but if Mark wants to finish it himself (when he has the time) who are we to critisize that? there would be nothing but untouched forest there if he didn't enjoy building. let's not pressure him to rush this project, it's just not fair.
he may have had a comittment to the land owner, but NOT to us riders.
funny how people are chomping at the bit to finish Mark's trail for him.... yet getting people to work on Neds or CBC is like pulling teeth. and both of those arguably need huge work just to remain open.

Salvation: Salvation is a new line that is planned to open by early 2005. It was designed to keep bike traffic off of the hiking only Incline Trail. Salvation is a skinny lover’s paradise as it features a ton of narrow ladders and logs. Advanced riders will appreciate the large and technical teeter-totter as well as the log ride to gap jump. Salvation comes out on the power line road directly across from the top of the Pingu Trail.

Hah! That's a good one.....I think that Smoke hit the nail on the head - the "easy" lines are so close to being done.....if NSMBA puts together a trail day (or two) over the next month I will be there to help. We could get the groundwork done leaving Mark to complete the "playground" at his leisure (referring to the stunts - not his bedroom reno).

i don't know who the *** you are but after reading this post and your susbsequent ones please forgive me if i am not jumping all over your generous offer of help. this trail was started almost 2yrs (not 2.5) ago and when i first started working on it i posted here on the boards for help pretty much every day i went up. for the first year i had basically no offers of help. in total i've had four people come out for one day each, another person help me out for a few days and one guy who's up here from oregon and going to school here help me out a fair bit in the past few months. shame on you locals because for the most part the people that have helped have not lived on the shore or even in the greater vancouver for that matter.
now that the word is out about how cool this trail will be (and i don't mind saying that) every body wants to lend a hand. i know i have to take some responsibility for that as all the talk i've done and having a thread full of pics on here doesn't help.
as for your disappointment about how no work has been done, it is obvious that you don't know your ass from a hole in the ground when it comes to trail work. this happens to be a big part of the reason i have become hesitant about people helping me out. i hold myself to a very high standard of quality when i build and because i ahve put so many hours into this trail so far (1500+ and counting) i am not willing to sacrafice the quality of work on it. to be brutally honest, most times it is faster and less frustrating to do something by myself than to teach someone or how to do it or go back and redo work that was done unsatisfactorily. that's waht trail days are for, to come out and learn how to build from experienced people.
i am very close to getting this thing done, but the recent renos to the gf's place and then purchase of a character home threw a wrench in my plans of having it finished already. i want to get it done to so i can get back on the bike and ride just like the rest of you.
there is a mini trail day coming up in the first or second week of june to get the trail finished so we can all ride.
and finally, for all you **** that are constantly poaching the trail; get off your bikes for 15 or 20 minutes and pile up some rocks at the start of the first log ride. that will help get the trail open just a bit sooner.

I can see why folks are chomping on the bit , there has been many wicked picts and its right there.
nonetheless lets show a little understanding, even if syncro has an agreement w whomever , I think it would be worth the wait to let it get finished properly..thats not only trail building , thats trail building art.
I rode seymour today and it seems like there is still trails to hit with out hitting salvation.
def it would be nice to see it get done but its not like there arent any good reasons for the delay.

Mark....I didn't mean any harm with the posts. That was not my intention. I believed that you were surveying lines for the trail about 2.5 years ago...but if I am wrong I apologize - I was six months out. For your information everytime I rode by your trail for the past two years I have stashed my bike and walked in to chat if you were there. Often you turned down my offers of help but there were a few times myself and friends helped drag some cedar in.
I don't know about the first year you were working on the trail (other than the times I walked in to say hi) but I know you had help from volunteers on trail days last year. I know it doesn't even come close to the 1500+hrs of hard labour you put into the trail but at least it is something.
My intent with the posts wasn't to harm....I wanted to help get the groundwork completed so that it could be ridden. The thought of touching any of the amazing woodwork you have put on the trail never crossed my mind. From my discussions with you I know how much pride you have put into the quality of construction of the trail...It truly shows. I understand that construction of such quality takes time to build - and appreciate that - none of your stunts are going to fall apart any time soon!
As someone who has worked with volunteers on a number of trail projects (MB and Hiking) I know how frustrating it can be to see trail work being done to below your standards. Having to come back later and modify/correct the work is not at all fun. That being said - if you as the trailbuilder were to walk the trail with other experienced builders willing to manage construction of a small section of trail (groundwork) for the trail day(s) - you could ensure your vision of the trail is maintained through their watchful eyes. They could guide the volunteers to ensure things are done right. You can't be everywhere at all times on the trail day but experienced trailbuilders with your vision in mind can!
Thanks for mentioning to the poachers they should pile rocks. A sign might go a long way there - the poachers would probably ignore it but those walking in out of curiosity would probably help out. I know I would. Your trail will be cool and I obviously look forward to the day that it opens. My offer to help you on Salvation still stands. I have weekends off until early June.

Mark, your work is quality. Don't go for the quick solution. The best trails have all taken quite some time to build. :)
Hell yeah Synchro, don't give in to all the pressure, you did all the work you deserve the right to open the trail when you see fit. I think to open it early with all the b-lines would seem silly and make it harder for you to do it right. But hey that is just me.
