View Full Version : SFU - is it worth it?
Just wondering what the Burnaby Mountain/SFU trails are like. We are looking for cross-country trails, as our old bodies are a bit banged up lately from the North Shore trails, and we need a little break. Is it worth going up? We're happy to ride up if need be. Oh hell, if it is a little "shore-ish", we definitely won't complain. Can we get a 2-3 hour ride in? And, has development chewed up the area?
Thanks
I dont know about development lately, but I believe the majority of the landmark trails at SFU are still wholly intact. If you are looking for a bit of downhill pointed xc riding you are looking in the right spot. I think its a pretty easy call to get in a couple laps of Nicoles (parking at the exit and then riding up twice) in 3 hours. Here is a map to see the other trails:

should print onto an 8.5x11 page if you have the right orientation.
Nicoles is the 'favourite' but Mels has some fun pumpy sections and Gear Jammer is fun too.
Fun spot, I dig SFU, so I'd say its worth it, especially if you've never been there.
Thanks, Coop! And a map, too. Excellent! I'm set for a Monday morning ride. Let's hope this 'ol body can follow...

I just got back. Did a lap up Joes, and down Nicoles in under an hour. It's the perfect spot for an after work rip.

I used to think I was in good shape, until I tried to ride up Cardiac Hill to the trailhead for Mels / Nicoles.
Ouch. Just... ouch.

How much quicker is it to push up Cardiac as opposed to riding around and up to the top? I've never gone that way, I just look up at that hill and go "no f&^%$ way"

5 minutes? It also spits you out at the top of campus so you can ride down the stairs and do some urban a the top.

Riding up Cardiac is tough, but not as hard as you might think. It's the worst where you first see it. Put yer head down and go, and before you know it its almost over.
Dave, Nelson is right..You save about 5 minutes if you go up it, and it puts you out in a more "fun" spot to get to the trail.
SFU has fun trails. A great place to get in a quick ride, or to break out the XC bike and do some loops.

Ride the climbs. Start at north road parking. Get to the track up top taking any route you want, then down nicoles to the bottom of Galardi.
