I'm upgrading my fork and thought that I might upgrade to an 8" rotor at the same time. Does anyone have any thoughts about running an 8" up front but a 6" in the rear. I'm concerned that I will get very different feel and modulation from the front & back. I'm running Hayes generation 1 hydros.

lots of people do it. You need more power on the front anyways so it only makes sense.

Go for it.

Many bikes come like that 8" front and 6" rear.

Personally I think you should go 8" and 8". More power and you should have better modulation.

That upgrade is going to be kind of expensive though isn't it. $30 front and rear for the caliper spacers and say $50 a piece for the rotors.

Modulation is all done by feel anyway. You might have to adjust your grip on 6 and 6 because of pad wear, lever throw, etc. I run 8 and 6 and the only difference I notice is that my left hand is less fatigued during the ride. Do it.

I run them that way because you don't really need the power in the rear, and that's the rotor that's more likely to get knocked around (and replaced). 6" rotors are cheaper to replace.

8" front 6" rear is really common. i've ridden that set up for the past 2 seasons and i haven't had any problems with it at all. i doubt i'll make the switch to dual 8" anytime soon either.

8" frt 6" rear is the standard setup...

8" rear is a unnecc. u'll just end up dragging your rear tire way more often.

Not really....

alot of companies put 8 inch rotors in the rear to make the bike look impressive to stupid little kids who want "bomber" shocks and 8 inch brakes. Ive seen racers who ride a smaller rotor in the rear.

the 8" rotor weighs almost twice as much as the 6" and is more likely to get bent cuz it hangs down more than the 6 and you gotta buy new rotors AND adaptors are the arguments against

more power are the arguments for the 8" or dual 8's

you might be fine with the 8 front and 6 rear setup since the rear wheel usually locks up pretty quick without much effort

some bikes don't fit an 8 on the rear(big hit I believe?)

if you are racing DH go with dual 8's

at interbike I seen a couple of 10" setups for the ultimate in power ,weight and:thepimp:

i just replaced my 8" rear, which was bent, with a 6". My reasoning is the 6" is less likely to hit stuff, and a 6" rotor is only 20 bux at MEC. So far I havent noticed any lack of brake power, but this is also on my HT, so no Whistler riding on that bike.

I've run 8" front and 6" rear on all my bikes -- HT or F/S
6" rotor in the rear is fine, even if you're riding Whistler all day.. if you're running a 24" back tire you should really consider the 6" rotor for the sake of clearance
