I'm looking into getting an all around bike, preferably a hardtail. I don't exactly know what is good though. Right now, i'm riding a GT Zaskar LE, which is purely XC. I do things on the GT that I probably shouldn't be doing. I want to ride street and freeride, but I also want to be able to climb to the top of a mountain without struggling. I'm willing to spend between $600 and $800 US. Thanks.

Hmmm do you want an "all-mountain" bike which is sorta of half-way between FR and XC or do you want something leaning more towards the abusive end of the spectrum, just not retardedly heavy?

Well, I figured spending $600 to $800 US, I could get a decent hardtail instead of getting a crappy full suspension. I would want something that I could put a beating on, but still be able to ride trails without being weighed down on the climb. So, to answer you question, yeah probably a "all-mountain" would work best, But, if not, a freeride hardtail that I can take to my local trails.

just keep doing what your doing on your hardtail, if it breaks buy a nice frame, if it dont break your gold.

Except when the headtube snaps like a twig, and his front teeth get punched up though his gums...

Good suggestion. In the price range, beefy, and easy to upgrade if necessary.

check out the norco charger 2005,
i had a 1999 xc racing one back in the days, i loved it,
its very solid, and light ride, im not too sure about street, but its definetly a good all around bike

Any body know the msrp of the Haro Escape series bikes? They look pretty good. Does any one have any feedback on the Haro Escape series? Thanks.

if you maintain your bike properly you see the cracks starting to form before the frame snaps.

What about the Kona Scrap or Stuff? Would they perform good on a climb if I raise the seat? They have two chainrings in the front. The prices aren't too bad. I'm going to go to my local bike shop and look at them.

I've got a Scrap and I love it. Climbing isn't that bad, not as good as an XC bike, mind you, but still pretty good.

I'm in the same boat. My bike frame is designed for XC but it's hopefully I won't die on it this summer. I've upgraded it too much so it's in between FR and XC now. What I'm doing is just using it up and then I'll buy a frame that's a bit beefier. I don't know, if your parts are good, maybe just get a frame and save some money to get better parts?

I think when I do upgrade the frame, I'd either get a steelhead frame or possibly a trailstar or if I'm cool enough a trail-or-park.

The Stuff would be a very good all-mountain hardtail. Pedals very well, fork and parts spec are decent, and the frame is plenty strong. The bike weighs 32lbs, so it isn't that heavy, and for climbing/XC, a lot of efficiency will come from the choice of tire.

Yeah, they're looking pretty good to me.

Can I put 24's on the Kona Scrap? Thanks.

You could, but it would more or less negate the trail viability of the bike. It becomes more street/dirt with 24s. Stay with 26s.

How about a Devinci Hucker, great hardtail for street and shore and Handbuilt in Canada. Got a small 2004 in the shop for $500.

Cove has some Stiffee FR frames for $500. One of the best do-everything hardtail frames.

I figured, but just in case there had been a mysterious set of circumstances in which the universe folded onto itself fives times and spit out an army of trolls for which the price of a complete hucker went down in price.

Still, it'll be a long time before I upgrade...

Go with the Kona Hardtales. I have an '02 Roast, the frame has hled up great and it can be used for anything! Great place to start with any of the Kona hardtales.

something like the stiffy sounds right up your alley. It's bit tougher than similarly styled bikes(uses actual RAD tubing and has different heat treating, though they may have changed that) and the geometry is designed with people like you in mind. Get a smaller one and rip some shit up!

I ended up buying a Kona Stuff. I liked the idea of a hardtail I can take jumping, because I have some BMX roots in me. It seemed like the best thing I could find, so I bought it from my LBS. Thanks everybody for the help.
