View Full Version : UV's Comox Valley Trail Log

Ok, borrowing from Putty and Syncro ( I think these log threads just kick ass ) I'm going to post recent new stuff in the Valley. I am on the verge of purchasing a new chainsaw so things should really start moving once that happens. I'll start with the most recent pic of some work that fixed poor access to a great trail here. It was nearly impossible to get the bikes down this awkward hill before.

You are correct. There is a short period during the year where it can't be crossed to high water. I built it knowing this, so we'll see what happens. As a matter of fact, there is a little bit of water at the bottom of it right now due to the sudden spike in temperature.

Yup...
It won't wash out until next year (maybe). The chances of it washing are pretty slim too. The water doesn't get high there, and there is little current. One days work to access one of the best trails here. See my point?

no not really. i still cant get my head around building something that you know will erode, and wash out a crutial structure, like a tranny. the water doesnt go high? rain will erode it just as quickly

If you can't understand thats your problem I guess.
Rain? Yea the stunts on the shore sure are eroding fast with all that 'rain' they get.
edit: maybe you aren't understanding the way its constructed due to the photo...the landing is a frame, not leaning on the band...it will be in water for about 1 month of the year...it won't wash away because the water there is only about a foot high for that period and doesn't move fast in this area.
Lastly, this is the ONLY rideable way down to this creek...after 4 hours of hiking I can promise you this....so...its either this or you don't ride the trail at all.

seems like theres a anger to that post. what i see is if you extended the strings longer so they werent so close to the edge, there wouldnt be a "possible" problem. its hard to compare your building to the building on the shore. its 2 completely different styles. shore is overbuilt for a reason.
sorry if it seems like i was unimpressed with your trail, i'm sure it will be a fun one. i never once in my posts bad mouthed it or put it down. i was just trying to understand something that i saw in your picture. sorry if i offended you

Longer? Close to what edge? Shore vs here is the same 'rain' forest so its not that different. My slats are thicker than most of the shore stunts. Its well overbuilt. Thanks for insulting my hard work though. It's much appreciated.

whoa whoa, never insulted your work. what i ment by longer strings, is that from the pictre, the end of the stringer looks very close to the edge. if you had made the tranny with longer stringers, the bottoms wouldnt have been closer to the edge, so "IF" the edge eroded away, the stringer would still be safe.

No problem man. What you have to understand is in this situation, you have to cross a pretty big creek to get to the trail. The creek is only uncrossable for a short period of the year. I figured a nice gap down to the creek bed beats the ladders, ropes and crossing a VERY dangerous log jam. The trail is well work a stunt that 'might' have some damage done to it.

If you go back and read this one - you're kinda assuming a lot of stuff - for those of us from the valley, this quietly ridden trail just got better from a day of work by one helpful soul.
IF you haven't seen the trail, then just look at it think "interesting" and head on..

looks good darren. the one thing i'd do is cut down the width of those rungs a little bit so they don't get torqued off the stringer. it would increase the fun factor by havng it skinnier too. mind you, if the trail isn't gonna get a lot of traffic you probabaly don't have to worry about it.

Trust me when I saw those rungs are never coming off. They are inset in the log, compression fit, and secured with 5 inch spiral nails. Every one was checked with my own weight. Its solid, trust me :)

We nailed a board under the log on each side for added support for all the rungs, to prevent what Syncro mentioned the other day, since these are flat. Once again, super solid. 5-6 foot drop at the end, so next I'll have pics of the tranny and hopefully a rider :)

This year I've spent 80 hrs building and ridden 43 times. That's pretty much 50/50. Not to mention all the time spent on the political side of it. But at the end of the day, it's worth it. :)

any recommendations from the CV locals?
What type of riding do you like? Theres lots of "All Mountain" bike type terrain. Some trails encompass DH to XC.
Cumberland has a wide mix of trails in a concentrated area and there is a map available at the bike shops. I would recommend riding Cumberland for a first time trip to the CV, unless you have multiple days to spend.
http://www.simoncycle.com/trailmap.html
Forbidden Plateau has a lot of shuttleable terrain (or ride up as a warmup) and all the stunts have ride arounds. The trails are a little harder to find your way around on tho. Guide would be recommeded imo.
And if you want to hit some sweet tech XC trails come on up to Campbell River.

I like DH that may or may not involve pedaling, prefer natural, flowy with mid size jumps and drops, not into mandatory skinnies or gaps.

well - unfortunately we've got a rather sporadic trail maintenance program... more map sales will allow us to buy more tools and get more regular trail work crews...
most people here like the trails such as they are - a bit more like the shore before it was paved...

Come rain or shine and join us for the first official Trail Day on Forbidden Plateau. Meeting time is 10am at the Nymph Falls parking lot, and we'll be heading up to the top from there. Bring your shovels, pulaskis, mattocks and gloves.
It's somewhat short notice but it's likely that we can get a selection of snacks beverages, etc to keep everyone going.
The plan is to do a mass work day on Two Sheiks, and potentially we have upwards of 20 people likely to show up. Plans include water control, the Good Enuf trail section, rock and soil work along the trail.
If you ever ride forbidden but haven't done any trail work before, we'll be happy to help teach some tricks.
Can't make it for the whole day or still want to ride? add 30 minutes to your ride and come help pick rocks for the trail :)
Looking forward to getting everyone together and turning this into a regular event!

Started fixing a section with a lot of old bridges, small drops and roll downs off of big cedar logs. There is a teeter totter here that has been there for almost 10 years and still works. Its just a log nailed to a board. Odd. Anyway, this big log with roll down rolled a bit over the years rendering everything nailed to it useless. It was unrideable in the wet due to the angle and sliminess from being dimensional lumber. Here are before and afters.

Rode monkeys -> peckerhead today and rudy's. Was nice to finally ride the fruits of our labour from the first couple trail days of the year. Everything is in pretty good shape, as both trails have seen recent trail work.
Maybe next trail day?
ya it would be good to spend some time on screamin.

Just a little finish work left. The line is now rideable, but I'll be doing the 2 ramps back on the first log which are rotting.

Finished the last bridge on the long logride section of twister. Just some more log flattening to do and the whole line is complete.

Another roll down today off another log ride. The original which you can see was awkward and..well...crappy.

Working on a ramp line that was started by someone else over a year ago and was never finished. They used pine boards for it. I'm using cedar obviously and today finished the entrance ramp, and will continue to re-top and brace the rest of the line.

It is being worked on right now and it out of commission until next time I go up. I ripped the rest of the crap down and started the rebuild.

Rebuilt the 2nd gap after the monolith today. After 8 odd years the original gave up the ghost.

Screamin Demon, a local trail here has falling boundary around the top section. Shame...guess a rebuild will be in order down the road. Sheiks time may be limited.

Didn't go down, but it would make sense to come off the corner. FC 60 was the last corner so its a sizeable block.
