Heres the problem. I bought this rear wheel from a shop. It was a 24" mag 30 with xt rear hub. I later decided to trade it up for a 26" wheel of the same kind.

They made the wheel up for me. Once I had brought it home, I noticed that it was different from the provious hub. After some research I found out that the hub is a 6 year old design, the XT FH-M755. The prvious hub was a newer model XT FH-M756 from last year.

Is there a difference significant difference between these 2 hubs? Was I ripped off?

Thanx to anyone with words of wisdom.

Really?
what about in terms of price?
I got an older one in exchange for a new one.

no difference at all?

While as you've probably noticed the newer XT has cut-outs in the flanges to shave some weight. Otherwise the design is pretty much the same. From my experience the older XTs actually hold up better.

interesting opinion.
Thanx for that bit of advise dude, helps alot.

the anodizing on the 755 comes off inside the bearing race and turns the grease into grinding paste, turning the bearings into..............buying a new hub thread.

you realize you just caused some poor bastard a real headache because someone came in with a story they heard on the intarweb right der? :D

there is no difference dude. put it on your bike and be on your merry way.

putting an XT instead of a hadley is a difference.

DAMNIT!!
JUST WHEN I THOUGH ALL WAS RIGHT IN THE WORLD!!

Well this meens that im gonna have to go all the way to coquitlam and get the damn thing replaced. Maybe I can just get a hole new hub. Any hubs that you guys could suggest that would be tough and have plenty of initiation points? And also cheap:D.
I'll be using this hub for street/dirtjump style riding. With some north shore riding on the side.

Speak up!!

don't believe the hype.

there's a reason that the XT is the benchmark for quality durable hubs at a good price.

keep your cones adjusted and you should have zero problems with it.

hmm a paradox it seems. perhaps you should try saving more money if you want more initiation points. or buy a formula if you want tough and cheap.

It's like $3 for new bearings, IF they wear out.

LOL, Man this is a hot topic.
I could be able to save up a bit more. But for what? is there a step up from the xt worth getting?

a step up from the xt worth getting is like a $100 step up ontop of the xt price.

I dont know how long youve been riding or what you like riding, but xt's served me fine for the first 3 years of my riding career. Eventually you get to a point where a hub matters, but it takes a while. your forks, rear shock, rims, tires matter more initially. spend money there.

I'm aw inspired by your wisdom oh wise one:eek:. I will heed your words.

And on a side note, so far I've been riding for about a year. Started out with a duely suspension. And Later on found out that I was a sloppy rider. So I'm starting over. Sellin the old and building myself a damn fine hardtail. Gonna learn some jib, and then bring that to the mountain. Fine tuning.
This hub will be for the new bike. Since its a hardtail, Im just making sure it's the right choice :D.

Derwood is right. The anodizing would sometimes chip, turning the bearings into motza balls, and nicking the races.

I've seen it a handful of times, requiring a new hub.

95% of owners will never have a problem. The other 5% probably will. Poor adjustment is almost always the culprit it seems.

Keep the bike tuned, it should be fine, but it could not be anyway.

Just have them replace it. If you got it from a good shop, they will see their bad and fix it.

At least bearings are cheap.

Nice spec King Xcaliber.

The sealing will let in dirt before the anodising creates any problems. Anyway the races are steel presed in ones, so unless your wheel is totally shonky then there should be no contact with the alu.

IMHO this is internet scaremongering. Ive seen loads of these hubs and they all die because of badly adjusted cones and dirt ingress (this is what looks black in the grease and grinds the anodizing off not the other way round)

Here in the UK there is a huge gap between XT and anything better

XT rear hub £27 can$ 75
Hope Bulb £130 can$ 320ish

If your worried about your hub, open them up and clean them out, make sure you get everything out of the hub shell also. Regrease, and good to go.

Nice spec King Xcaliber. yeah, bearings are cheap....but you can't fix the wear groove that forms in the hub race:( .

Maladjusted cones?come on now.....Ive been at this for a while;) you can adjust all day and still not account for the coating wearing off and causing an uneven bearing surface.
