How come its cool to look poor?
How come its cool to dress our bikes up with 80's colours??
How come its cool to look like a "dirtbag"?
How come its cool to act like where black, when really where just a skinny long haired kid still in highschool?
what happend to day trips?
what happend to being "bros" with everyone in the biking commuity?
what happend to sharing riding locations?
what happend to using full words, ie. "emo"?? wtf!?!?
Now these questions are not pointed at anyone, just what i have seen over the past year of not riding as much as i did before.
Its because mountain biking is now "cool"

I blame capitalist society.
Actually, fuck that. I'd take a poor looking, skinny long haired kid, with a bike that has 80s colours, riding around town alone, over a rich looking kid with $4095 Raceface shorts, on a bike with 74 Fox stickers, doing shuttle runs in his moms SUV with his hack buddies.

It's still like that with the over 30 crowd.
It's unbelievably liberating to know you aren't cool and not care - well not too much.
As far as sharing riding locations goes many of us still live by the old code.

hahaha how come this buddy doesnt get thrashed for worrying about what other people wear ??
anyways i think its people attempting to look normal while bike riding. mtn biking was flooded with so many hardcore trends that so many of you indulged in. how can u badmouth "trends", when most of the people themselves were the ones sporting fox moto gear, throwing the horns and hacking up some trail.
why do u care what other people do ? im not supporting some of the things u describe but im not condeming them.
ps: check out this site. prolly suits u better

As I have gotten older I have realized the best thing about mtn biking is that it can be a soul sport (ie surfing). I don't like to race anymore, it ruins it for me. I am a little too competitive and it only becomes about winning. People who appreciate the soul aspect of the sport ride because it makes them feel good to be out getting exercise in nature and challenging themselves mentally and physically. I worry about mtn biking sometimes, and I don't want to generalize, but when I am at Whistler or riding Seymour among the shuttlers, I don't feel the soul. I notice a totally different feeling between riding Fromme or Seymour. I used to ride Seymour almost exclusively and now I tend to ride Fromme. Fromme just feels better. Sometimes I think people worry too much about which suspension design is best or that they have a square taper BB. I think like everything, you don't appreciate the soul of mtn biking until you age. It also feels really good to ride things at 35 that I could not ride at 25.

"emo" isn't a mountain biking term, get on the indie rock culture scene, not the wigger scene. Mountain biking just got COOOL.:thepimp: :thepimp: I'd have to say its progression, street riding is big, youre on the streets in public, you need to look normal. not like a storm trooper riding around at the skateparks. its moved to the mountain. I support looking good, fashion and riding. Oh yeah. I wear jeants and t shirts when i ride. maybe some sweet looking shorts that arnt basketball ones but yeah riding shorts that arnt really lame looking. looking casual is what its all about becuase riding is casual and chill.
sooke hooligan
03-09-2005, 10:58 PM
exactly. why do we need shorts that are 15 inches thick for riding ??? its rediculous, seriously. I think the problem is people got so used to dressing up like a storm trooper they got so carried away they didnt realise what hey look like.
Midas
03-09-2005, 11:05 PM
they complain we care about fashion because we were normal clothes. but they go out and buy stormtrooper suits that "look cool" and then deny they bought it for fashion and for purpose. when it doesnt make a differance safety wise

I'd hate to be 16 and having to look the part. Riding a bike with my jeans half way down my thighs and my ass-crack showing would suck.
Remember kids, roadies and XC riders have tried it all, and lycra shorts actually do feel great when you have to pedal.
Speaking of pedaling, why is it always "old" people who are pedaling up Seymour? I don't think I've ever seen any teens climbing the mountain.

well first of most of us 16 year olds dont drive so we rely on our rentz or friends for rides to mountains and then if u only have 3 hours for a fromme ride then whats the point of climbing up in a shorter time when u will be done the ride in like 2 hours and end up waiting or asking ur ride to come earlier

ditto. ride for yourself, that is what it's all about.
in addition, everytime i ride it's just a shirt, and pants or shorts. i dont get all dressed up in "the gear" (excluding a helmet) because i like to feel casual. with just my regular clothes i feel like i'm just "hopping on the bike for a ride" and more connected with the bike.
not the case if i put on $500 worth of flashy riding gear which makes me look like i'm going to do battle with the mountain. even when i ride shore on the big bike, i'm pretty sure the forest doesn't give a hoot if i have the latest oakley jersey or whatever.
but hey that's just my opinion, if one cares to get all dressed up, thats them and thats coo with me.

I'm one of the old guys. It takes me 1 hour 20 minutes to ride from the Stupor Store to CBC to Bottle Top and back out.
The shuttlers I see need time to meet and load, then to drive up and park, put armour on ride the road to the trail head, then at the bottom take off armour get into another vehicle, then drive back up Seymour to retrieve first vehicle, drive back down, transfer gear. Still takes 1:20 I bet

I can tell you that 10 years ago, nobody shared riding locations. They showed you, unless they took off so fast you couldn't follow. So don't get the impression that anything has changed for the worse. On the contrary, it's way more open now than it ever was - and better. I like the fact that it's less "clubby".

It is getting better in many respects.
The point I was making was that riding is just that - riding. If there's no shuttle, I'll still ride. That's the way it was, but that's not exactly the way it is today.

The more you type the more you are illustrating the main points in this thread...
A simple discussion about how the bike scene has changed, and you find a way to work in a challenge to the people discussing it (where you sarcastically ask me to define what not existing meant) and then you take it to the next level, sharing your bitterness, with a little personal jab at someone taking part in the thread ("you were probably too busy moderating to have heard it").
Why the sour attitude? How does a discussion about the changes in biking justify your little shots at people in the discussion?
I recall a time where the bike scene was small and everyone was always stoked to be out, and to talk about it, etc. It's gotten a lot bigger, and I'm stoked to see it grow and to see new people get into it.
I don't like that despite all the great folks it's brought into it, how it's also attracted the kind of sour, unfriendliness that we are seeing in this thread. That, my friend, didn't use to be nearly as common.
If it helps you get stoked to ride, so be it...

emo just sucks leave it at that and let it die. I ride in whatever, for street or some Djs im not gona go out there in a jersey and big moto pants it just dosent fit. I wear whats comfortable which is some shorts or jeans and a t shirt usually. Look at every other new progressive sport like this they also wear casual clothes. The thing is let people do what they want. As said before ride more bitch less. Dont worry about what other people do just keep on keepin on.
Also i find it funny that you say whats with all the abrieviations like emo then follow it up with wtf.

my question was not sarcastic, i was serious.
i honestly think that the biking scene hasnt changed as much as all of you would like to beleive. of course almost everythign has evolved. Although I think you will see a diffferance in peoples opinions and peoples actions, of course if you ask such an open ended questin on an anonymous internet forum, your bound to get some uprising but i think that generally speaking people are all out there to have fun. I dont think anyone is going to make fun of anyone for clothes they wear or bikes they ride ? but hey, sure lets make it an nsmb topic.
that being said, ive heard alot of older 30's+ category guys ragging on "street riders" at whistler for using a hardtail up there. " get back to the skatepark" haha !. just tohught i'd point that out, i dont tihnk it has anything to do with this.

I think that sucks, and it does indeed relate to this. It's the pre-occupation with what other people are doing and how they are doing it... it shouldn't matter what people ride or how they do it, 'cause we all do it for the same reasons.
Sounds like jealous old guys to me. ;)

Yeah, this sport has come a long way. But while it has progressed a lot, I think the issues you raise aren't so much resulting from the progression, but from the inclusion of so many more people, and different types of people.
When I started riding, anyone who had an actual mountain bike was automatically "hardcore." It wasn't cool yet, so it only attracted those people who were in love with bikes.
Now, mountain biking is cool. More people are getting involved (not saying that is a good or bad thing), and different people are getting involved. But there is still the core group of riders who are simply in love with biking. Others who ride because it is cool will be on to the next thing when it hits. But that core group will remain.
ps riding to the trails means you are warmed up for the first dh!

im not sure how you guys can sit on here and argue all day, dont you get it, people all have there own opinions, and as you mature, these can change! most people arguing are stuborn, and its pointless arguing. clearly guys that are 30-40+ are going to view things different, think of it this way, would i really want my dad doing stuff that i was into? no, he would collapse! bald guys dont look good in hats. dont take fasion so seriously, im still going to ride in my jeans and tshirt for the majority of the time. it never seems to click in when i read it, but actaully TRY and not complain so much on here!

I've been riding since the 1980s (on and offroad), and there have always been elitists, people who were too cool to talk you or acknowledge the existence anyone they didn't consider cool. It doesn't bother me since people ride for many different reasons, but a shared sense of community is always nice to see. D.

Emo is a trendy indie rock stereo type, gererally music where the singer cried about how nobody loves him or understands him and how his heart is broken and wants to cut wrists. Typical dress is black hiar with whispy bangs off to the side, tight jeans, shirts converse shoes and ear plugs.

Sometimes I feel as though I'm intruding on your space because I don't live on the "shore".
BUT...everytime I make a comment, or ask for help, information or whatever, I am made to feel welcome by all (most). The point I'm trying to make is that the styles you see on the trails are more reflective of the TV/general public culture that we all live in one way or another. I ride with kids sometimes (yes anyone less than 30 y/o is a kid to me as I'm probably the 'old man' to them). I'm sure that without the common desire to bike (street/mountain/dj or whatever) we would never hang out.
WITH mtb'ing in all it's forms I am exposed to more cultures/personalities and I feel more enriched because of it.
I think that instead of looking down on other people for what they wear while riding, look at their face, if their smilling that's what matters. Body armor is a nice thing for someone like me, because it hurts like hell to drive a boat at 22kts with broken ribs and I plan on hucking bigger every year till I can't get my leg over the top tube (then I might get a girlie bike;-).
I don't wear lycra and my bike is not pink, but I lived through the 80's and my pink izod shirt has long since rotted away.
As far as telling people about secret trails, the old code still exists, I've had a few offers to be shown when I go to BC this August...come here and I'll show ya mine.

Essentially if you think somebody is worthy of a particular trail - say one that isn't well known - and they won't be an indiscrete trail snitch you take them there.
You don't give directions over the phone or on the internet - you personally go on a ride with them.
Trail knowledge doesn't spread like syphilis when this rule is adhered to - it happens at a more linear, organic pace.

Mountain biking has always been cool. Thats why I started.
There were some of "US" who thought it was really cool and saw the future. we were involved in early free-ride projects, and lots of years of heated conversation about where it should go.
I am about to turn 31, and I am riding at the peak of my progression, I now ride for all the right reasons, and some of the new found maturity that is a part of my non-riding life has helped me to concentrate when I rip.
I might even go ride for a few videos this year, I'm gettin tired of watchin ghey steez in videos, time for the return of the sideshow, don't have to go huge to make er look nice for the lense, and smooth feels good.
So ya, the +30 club is treating me all right.

- enjoy the ride
- avoid the emergency room

You guys are great, this was a very entertaining read.
I watched the 70's-80's BMX scene in the interior from the sidelines and then the NS scene in the 80's and 90's but didn't hang with the "cool crowd" and thank god it has evolved. Can you imagine still riding XC hardtails with catilever brakes and 2.2 tires? Since when did gear not matter, that has always been a big topic. ROACH armor came out when and for who?
Things haven't changed, you have. Some of the guys in the 80's & early 90's were/and still are as elitist or arrogant to the outsiders as some of the kids are now. We rebeled against society by doing what was unheard of with our bikes and now the Groms are rebeling against us by pushing the limits even further.
Bring it on, lets keep evolving. Just please don't bring back neon colors.:D

I agree they have nothing to do with performance, but function in clothing/gear can and some people do care about how they look. I don't but my wife keeps telling me I should, so I guess she does and she's a hardcore ripper on the DH runs.
What's wrong with seeing how many shuttle laps you can do in a day, it's not the same as how many laps on Fromme you can do or how fast, but it's still riding. Are you saying you've never counted and compared how many laps you've done over a few beers at the end of the day?

I think "Mountain Biking" is having an identity crisis. How many times have you heard XC riders say that DHing isn't true mountain biking yet that's how it started in Marin with the repack crowd, they were shuttling to DH then they added gears to get up the hills easier. Oh no, now they're XC. Then comes the Shore with it's technical moves and harsh terrain that requires moves like wheeley drops, which we didn't invent we took from trials. Time goes by and the equipement gets better and we start going faster, start looking for more jumps and flow and start using skills that, OH MY G*D, BMXers have been doing for years before us just on different terrain. Now you have DH parks where we don't climb much, MMMHHH, sounds like shuttling but without the vehicles. Back to the top.
Mountain biking doesn't need to be pigeon wholed, that's what makes it soo great.
How many of you that have been riding for more than 5 years are still riding the same type of rig on the same terrain with the same skills? Better yet how many of us only have one kind of bike?
What do you feel like doing with your bike today?

I ride a full rigid occasionally too, I just can't do it all that often as my ankles and hands don't take the beating like they used to.
Built the bike up to fool around on as a beginner trials, but I've ended up using it riding trails more.

10 years ago. Riding Bridal Path out to Hyannis, then along the Seymour River, Twin Bridges, to the dam, back on Fishermans / Riverside / Seymour parkway. That was really fun. Can't be done any more with toe clips - Bridal is a lot harder.
