“There is a contingency that doesn’t want to give up what they have been doing for the past umpteen years, and they can be pretty nasty about it.”
- craver
I never knew we were all such ass holes

“The District has to spend tens of thousands of dollars to undo the damage [by mountain bikers],” Councillor Crist told The Tyee. “We had to repair the trails, we had to remove illegal structures. The mountain bikers illegally cut down a great number of trees in the forest illegally to build structures.”
- Crist

So let me refresh my mind.. Crist is paying for all the work the nsmba dose? I THINK NOT!.. that is complete bull shit.
as for us cutting down trees? i blive that All the builders use is wood that has been naturaly nocked down Ie. by wind.. or other natural causes..

Man Crist is sooo full of shit his eyes are brown..

crist is very good about getting his name in the paper...maybe its not that he hates us, but just want some attention.

i bet most poeple would not be able to name another councillor n north van, so he is doing something right.

i could not listen to that cknw broadcast, he is completely full of shit.

i would still like to see these costs that he talks about.....again sk8boarding...600,000 K park this year, soccerfields with parking lots, baseball diamonds with parking lots, local attractions with parking lots....mtn trails shit all. an we maintain our trails as well as their hiking trails for free.

this is all been said too many times.

Excellent points. So get out to vote him out N Van people!

It is truly odd that somebody wants to take away a major tourist destination from the lower mainland.

I still think that somebody more articulate than myself should adress council and have him prohibited from making unsubstantiated statements to the media.

After all, when he speaks to the media he is in the role as a representative of council.

Any takers?

I work 6 pm to 6 am,so I cant even volunteer if I wanted to.

print off actual articles, enough for all of council and the Mayor, and explain how he is misrepresenting council and the District by spreading misinformation.

Do you think that if the District accountants were lying about expenditures ,that council would tolerate that?

What if a councillor called out the Mayor on false travel expenses?

Wait a second...Crist did that to Don Bell.....raised a ruckus over it too, because Bell was apparently lying about his expenses.

Kettle,meet Pot.......

What always gets me going about him is when he says "we have had to go in and repair the damage caused by these mountain bikers." Is he not speaking about ONE TRAIL built by ONE MOUNTAIN BIKER (whatchamacalit) that went against the NSMBA's agreement with the DNV of "no new trails until existing trails are maintained"?

p.s. Derwood - I'm lovin that sig:P

Thanks for the link to the article.

I talked to the reporter a little at the trail day, and she took a photo of our group, but apparently didn't use any photos she took that day.

I wouldnt mind.. but is it worth it?

Hello Mrs Mayor. Hopefully I remember correctly that you in fact a Mrs - my apologies if I'm mistaken. I would like to take this time to ask you if you are aware of Councillor Crist's involvement on the Bill Good show yesterday morning, March 7th, where, as it would seem to the uninformed caller, that he is a spokesman for the DNV Council which would thusly conclude that the DNV is opposed to mountain biking. Particularly opposed to mountain biking on Fromme. I would sincerly hope this is not the case in either Ernie Crist being the pokesman or more importantly, that the DNV is in agreement with Crist's moratorium on mountain biking. I do believe he should be reprimanded harshly for his actions and let his record show that he speaking with a biased point of view, unsubstantiated claims of examples, half truths at best while also stating the DNV has led this issue with faulty leadership (this is "issue" is snowballing into a fiasco). I previously asked you if you were aware of his invovlement as what he stated on the air is nothing short of preposterous while painting a picture of North Vancouver as a reclusive, residents only club that the vast surounding wilderness is only suited for with an unprogessive council. Is this what a member of your council is able to get away with - what is considered by many, inside and outside the mountain bike community, as a personal crusade? Who is he really accountable to? Did you know he was going on the air and if so, was he given a precursing statement to clarify that these his views and his actions, not those of the DNV Council? I am well aware of the ARSS that is in progress and Mr. Crists attempts to derail it. I do attend the Council meetings when I can where these issues should be dealt with - not on the air where all but Mr. Crist is purported in a dark light. I have included a link below to the CBC's audiovault where you can hear the broadcast if you happened to miss it.

Thank you for the takin the time to read this,

Dave...

her reply.

Thank you for your email. I would like to reassure you that Councillor Crist is not the spokesman for DNV council, and the views he aired on the Bill Good Show are his own. For your general information, this issue is still in active discussion. I am anticipating that after an April workshop on the Alpine Recreational Strategic plan, a formal decision will be duly debated and voted on at a council meeting. I should add that Councillor Crist has one vote of a total of seven.

Sincerely,
Mayor Janice Harris

Would this person need to be a resident a NV? Or just preferably?

I replied to Mayor Harris' email with one that may or may not receive a reply. Not mean, just a hard tone. I thought about being a reporter as a career but I came to realize that after the first interview I would get, it'd probably be the last with that person :P

Picture of crist, photochopped to look like a devil, beneath him being his legendary, but summarized quote, also stolen from i think derwood's sig, "When I state my personal opinion,I am speaking for all the residents of North Vancouver"

simple, black and white.

done on the back of a shirt.

On the radio show, Councillor Crist repeatedly stated it was his "personal" opinion on many of the matters he put forward.

When someone refutes Councillor Crist's unsubstantiated claims with facts, then the real point of the matter is being addressed. This occurred during the radio show, and Councillor Crist came across as either uninformed, or a liar.

What pisses me off is that I spent 1/2 hour with the reporter at the trail day, told her all the good things about NSMBA. She saw the great work being done. took pictures..... and all she's got to say is this

"On February 27, over 120 participants showed up to clear a segment of the Baden Powell trail on Fromme Mountain. Volunteers cleared rocks and debris, put in wooden steps and ensured that water was draining clear of the trail."

WTF... cleared rocks and debris. That bitch.

Four lousy fucking lines about all the hard work that went into a hiking trail and that's all she's got to say, and the whole rest of her article dedicated to Ernie Crist and Monica Cravers BULL SHIT.

What sells news = controversy. Fuck the truth. Let's go with Ernie and Monica.

03-10-2005, 01:08 PM
You hit the nail on the head DD...I am constantly amazed at how much attention they (newspapers, TV, radio) give to the Ernie's and Monica's of the world, and how little time and exposure is given to the NSMBA and all the good stuff we do!

Case in point the Bill Good show, even though Ernie lost credibility IMO, he still got a significant portion of the Mic time. Ken never really got a chance to explaing the NSMBA and what we do.

Somehow we need to use the media's constant need for controversy to our advantage....ideas anyone???

I would buy a couple of those.

Here's another idea for a shirt.

Front says "ernie says" and then have a picture of mountain biker in circle with cross through it (like no smoking signs).

Back says "I say" "Ernie Crist" in the same symbol.

I'd wear it everywear. Especially when I go to town hall.

As funny as some of these shirt ideas are - they're pretty much just playing into the stereotype that he would like to have people believe about us.

03-10-2005, 02:35 PM
Yeah - the shirts are a cool idea, but let's not sink to the level Ernie thinks we're on.

On the otherpoint - it's too bad we couldn't find some REAL dirt on our friend Ernie, and let it escape to the media. Then, every issue he was on would be pushed aside as he performed career damage control. Unfortunately, aside from being a pompous ass, he's probably pretty clean.

I havent heard back from Mayor Harris yet. I can see why in regards to this email I sent to her in regards to her reply to me from page 1 of this thread.

Thank you for the reply Mrs Harris. The DNV spokesman comment was a rhetorical question peering in to see if you cared what a Councillor can say on the air. I'm sure you and your council members would receive far less emails pertaining to this subject if he was muzzled for lack of a better expression as I honestly feel his conduct is unbecoming that of a councillor. It is more of a U.S. Politician seeking to manipulate the facts for his own ends. Regardless of how many votes Mr. Crist has, it is the general misguided reader or listener that Mr. Crist will inform of what our conduct as mountain bikers are, further distancing us and our efforts in the forest to reach an amicable settlement. I sincerly ask that you speak with him to see what his true underlying motives are as he seems to changes them at his whim to suit the question being asked. Once again, thank you.

Does the NSMBA do news releases about trail days? They could provide the papers with written material, conact numbers for more info, and photos. Then it's easy for them and they don't have to pay reporters to come out. It would be a good way to squeeze in info about who the NSMBA is, their direction and motivation, trails and the environment, positive relationships with the community, etc.

Of course just because a news release gets sent, it may not get used, but it might be worth a try.

It seems to me that while i was listening to the show from the audio vault that Mr. Good appeared to be on the good side (ours). Why don't you approach him and see if he'll give you a 1/2 hour ? Make sure you are armed with all documents referring to mountain biking in the UK, New Zealand, the USA, and wherever he claimed that mountain biking has been banned. Possibly obtaining a rough idea as to how much $$ mountain brings in to the local shops and restaurants as well as an approxiamate dollar value in terms of tourism. Sounds like a lot of work but it appears that this forum has it's fair share of intelligent people and I'm sure that if a few pitched in and did some research it wouldn't take that long. You could approach companies like Rocky Mountain, Cove Bikes, Banshee etc. I'm sure they would be more than obliged to help out.

Just an idea.
