out of curiosity patrolskid, could you give us a lowdown on the process of building a trail like a-line? and what sort of machinery/time it takes ?

Team2K
03-08-2005, 10:14 PM
Its gonna be sweet... the best thing about whistler is how the park evolves from the start of the season to the end... remember last year, first there was nothing, then the box was put up, then garbanzo opened up with just 2 trails, then the slick gray camo paint jobs, then the crankworks stunts in the boneyard, and the serious beefing up of the BX, then each weekend it seemed a new trail on garbo... sooo goood looking forward to seeing more expansion this year, can't wait to see what it'll be for Late Aug 05 :D

i see they opened a new beginner area at the base of blackcomb too huh?

patrolskid
03-08-2005, 10:39 PM
well , first you gotta do a lot of walking , a lot of flagging , to put sections together in a way that works . it's no good to have a great section that leads to shit , so it is a bit of give and take , where the mountain usually has the last call .
it takes a lot of visualizing to see what could be created .

then you go in and do the initial cuts and start seeing the ground and the line develop . if the line is confirmed , then the bigger stuff can come down , and the mini excavator goes to work . depending on what he encounters as far as soil , rock , roots , determines how fast he can go to put in the initial grade . the enhancements like drops , gaps , tables , etc , get roughed in as he goes along , and then refined as good soil is found and moved around .
when things get to the point where you can roll through on a bicycle , you can start to get a feel for speed potential , and how things will need to be sculpted and modified to get close to the initial vision , which has probably been itself adapted as construction and the mountain dictated their requirements .
and like any trail anywhere , they are always a work in progress . any of you guys who were regulars up garb last season saw how long it took to get the first part of freight train underway , and that was the easy part . . . .

my guess is that it will be opened in sections . . . . . completion date ??????

there won't be anything like it , and worth the wait . . . . .

BertyG

i will race any of you on this trail and own you

safetee
03-09-2005, 12:46 AM
BertyG, i accept your offer of a race and i am quite confident i will own you and everyone else on this board. Muahaha. That includes you rosscofat. Dont think you can escape the ownage of the blur of light known as safetee.

BertyG
03-09-2005, 12:51 AM

well, even if BertyG is telling the truth, which he clearly is not. Clearly. I did invent the self propelled rocket which increases my awesomness by a gillion. So i by default will beat you and rosscofat.

BertyG
03-09-2005, 01:06 AM
Now this is ludacris. Basically i will take u all on especially rosscofat and safetee, mabey Super C and will show you that downhill supreme reigns across this province. We will place bets before the races..5 dollar buyins and we will race..depending on how many ppl enter there could be a big pot for the winner.

If it is done in time, my understanding is they may run the Air DH down freight train and then A-Line. That would be very cool.

Well Aline has about 70 booters on it times that by three and you get a rough estimate of what freight train might be like if it finishes out the way DK wants.

actually DK and i figured it out yesterday and came up with 31 jumps on a-line

no doubt freight train is going to be unreal , but remember that it will be a work in progress , and something that monumental is going to take some work . . . .

in other words : marketing dep't . . . . . take with grain of salt

I concur but if the snow is good low down I'm sure you could ride A-Line and the Fantastic Jump and Drop Park. Can't wait until opening of just the lower park!!!

sections of the freight train will be opened as they are ready . the first section was open at the end of last season , and if that is the indication of what is to come , i donno if i'm going to be able to handle it . . . . . . just one big hit after another . . . . by the time it gets to a-line , you'll be blind .

it'll be great to watch / ride the progression over the summer . . . .

I know this is a long way off, and is really hard to answer now, but if I were planning a vacation to whistler, when would be the best time to schedule my trip if I want to be able to ride ALL of freight train? a possible date as to when it will be fully complete?

patrolskid
04-05-2005, 08:33 PM
don't know . . . . it hasn't been built ( entirely ) yet . . . . but i'm guessing there will be variety as the terrain dictates : whatever is appropriate , and fits the imagination and the vision .

oh yeah , the flow . . . . can't forget the flow

patrolskid
04-05-2005, 09:03 PM
sorry ben , that last post was directed at kevin26 , but if i were planning a trip out here with one of the major goals to ride freight train , i'd wait until later in august if you wanted to get some of that summer busy vibe , or september when the summer holiday thing has past .

i'm guessing it will be more or less complete by then , be run in ( grooved ) and adjustment tweaks made .

this is a big project when you consider what is being undertaken , and i'm hoping everyone has realistic expectations about the timing . the guys doing the work really don't know what is involved until they start digging into the earth and find out what is there . . . . . . could go faster , could go slower .
if you stay tuned to this BB , you'll probably get a good idea of how things are progressing . . . . . hell , the first 300 meters are probably worth the trip , from what i've ridden .

and don't forget , the WBP was great even before freight train was planned , so you are going to get good riding whenever you show up . . . .

i'm really looking forward to the jump farm .

One thing to remember is that the all famous A-line took 2 years to complete but we were riding the open sections while they were building.

The fact that most of Frieght Train will be done this summer will be an amazing acomplishment. It shows why we have the best park in the world.
