Where in the world are there "severe restrictions" on mountainbiking besides Marin Co. in Cali??

Where in europe??????

Yeah I was just wondering that. I'm originally from the UK and if I remember rightly I was riding on shared trials in wooded areas. In Les Gets they have a LOT of riding in wooded areas. I was just in CA and I was riding in WOODED AREAS.

Where the hell did he get that info from?

Sadly can't call as I'm at work...... wouldn't be good to start ranting at my desk.

He just brought up most of the issues that have plagued the DNV council meetings.

What can kind of leadership is a full out ban? I wanted to ask that but the lines were obviously busy.

BTW Big Bear stopped DH biking due to insurance issues. Who know's this might change if Intrawest buys Big Bear/Snow Summit. (They already own a share in it). Anyway that's getting OT. Big Bear didn't close due to 'erosion'...... The only place that I really know of is Marin County and that was due to trail user conflicts....

He should just look at the money being poured into trail building in Scotland with the Seven Stanes project... it's being ENCOURAGED!!!

theprawn
03-07-2005, 11:57 AM
Also, should anyone get through, Europe has mountain biking areas springing up all over the place as the ski areas in the Alps and Pyreenes realise they can open lifts and cater to these riders during the 'closed' season.

ok, hes flat our wrong tho, and hes completely misdirecting the issue.
The issue is NOT the fact that fromme cannot accomodate world riders, it can, and has been for years. Someone bring up the fact that he hasnt even been on the mountain.. i wanna hear his reaction to this.

Since this is his personal opinion, he does NOT represent NV residence.

Ernie said he's been on the trails, and has seen the 'damage' himself. I would have liked to have been able to hear more specifics on that one. Up to now, he's never stated he's even set foot on a trail, and in fact has seemingly said that he hasn't because he's got 'reports'

Fabulous guys. Some excellent calls (Cam, Mike, Gary and the other names I forget!) and a solid job by Dan and Ken.

Ernie didn't answer a single question. He reverts back to his "main issue" which seems to change on a day to day basis. Every time this guy gets a microphone in front of him, I think he discredits himself even more...he just doesn't make any sense and when he is put up against well spoken, informed and articulate arguments he falls apart.

It was great to have calls from NY and California, Calgary, etc. People who do not have the same vested interest in the trails we do, yet who know it well enough to be on the phone speaking to them. It shows the size of the mtb population, and it shows the appeal (tourism) of the Shore.

Even Mr. Good was punching holes in Ernie's approach.

No but Mr. Good did say that the cost of the parking lot was roughly the same as what a new house goes for :) No one also took the time to clarify the fact that parking lot was not asked for by the mtn bike community or the fact that it would be a multi use facility with outhouses for all outdoor users.

I also dont think the last caller needed to mention the landslide issue as thats just in poor taste, besides the point and generally, blatantly disrespectful.

I tried to call in a bunch of times, but the lines were busy. I wanted to ask Big Ern how much the District spends on soccer fields, baseball diamonds, arenas, skateparks, and their associated parking lots. When Bill Good said "wait a minute, you can ride your mountain bike in California?" that was hilarious.

How many other north van coucilers have been on the bill good show twice in the last few months (ernie was on trying to force buisness owners to put english on thier signs)

This is exactly what he thrives on and why he gets elected, hes the only counciler that anyone recongnizes when they go to vote. Hes found a great target in the mountain bikers because we just keep bringing him into the limelight.

That is so true, although when everyone in the MTB community rallies like they did today - the exposure certainly helps our cause. Good job and thank you to everyone that called in - you all did great. I was listening in Switzerland, where last time I checked, you were allowed to ride your bike just about everywhere except through the train stations.

I have lived in 3 states, and ridden in washington, idaho, montana, oregon, californa, new mexico, arizona, and a trip to the woodlot.
i coulda SWORN that i was riding in the woods. and i coulda sworn that i was riding on some steep ass moutnains.. and i coulda sworn that i was doing so on sanctiond trails. But i guess i never did any of this. because its prohibited the world over.
this man has apparently, never done any research into the things that he says, and it needs to be pointed out. The man has no factual evidence behind what he is saying.

just listened to the "debate" on CKNW's vault, and all i can say is WOW, some one really needs to do their homework before they go on a radio station show with the profile of "The Bill Good Show". props to everyone who phoned in to the show and helped point out that mountain biking is a good thing. needless to say, Mr. Crist didn't do a thing to help himself, in fact he sounded very uninformed and unprepared and quite ignorant actually. How is it that no one from the opposition phoned in to support Mr. Crist argument. Just shows the mountain bike community is united and will not succumb to the pressures of the few.

As I have inquired on another thread:

I am curious;

Does anyone know why Crist is so against the Mountain bikers?

He has claimed many reasons for not wanting us on Fromme, but what is his real agenda?

It's obviously not environmental stuartship, and he was having a fit about us long before the million dollar parking lots were proposed.

Some research needs to be done here.
What's in it for him?.......................hmmmmmmmmm!?

Tom
03-08-2005, 11:37 AM
It's all about exposure. I know when I have voted in a municipal election, you select a given number of councillors. Many of them I had never even heard of, much less knew their stance on things. When residents of North Van go to vote, they'll see the name Ernie Crist and think "hey that guy is all over the radio and papers, he's WORKING!" and vote for him.

That and the fact he's just a grumpy bitter old man who wants to make sure no one has any fun, and will make up whatever reason he chooses to accomplish his goal.

A quick message to thank all who came out to the Vancouver Bike Expo/Outdoor Show this past year! We have made big strides getting the manufacturers and retailers on side with the show and we think we have some good momentum again for next year!

You'll see some changes for next years show...so stay tuned.

I saw some talk regarding a travel company that was at our show...and potentially scamming. This is a huge concern to me and our company...and we most definitely want to do whatever we can to prevent this type of crap happening at our event. We are aware of companies like this from previous years...and just so you know we have a company policy to not let them exhibit in any of our 32 events across Canada. Unforunately this one slipped through the cracks. If anyone has had serious issues please call me directly at 1-800-891-4859 ext 238 and I'll help you out! Thanks for your support of the show...stay tuned for details of a new look show for 2006!

Ironically, he (Mr. Crusty or whatever) is probably the best thing to happen to Vancouver municipal politics in ages. Nobody usually ever pays attention to it, and now, you have all of us, many of whom don't actually live there, ready to do anything, to continue to do what we love in the best place in the world for riding mtb bikes.

It's time for Councillor Crist to retire to the hinterland.

Of course it is just one issue, and he needs to retire to somewhere else, hopefully. But the issues that bring people out to municipal meetings here where I live tend to be for things like stopping housing developments. As if... So interest is pretty low everywhere. There should be a good turnout from our biking people at the next municipal election in N. Van though, and that's my point.
