Hi everybody,

so I am a trainee 2 become a teacher in two years (Germans need a bit longer due to excessive bureaucracy and stuff).

I do the same things as "ordinary" teachers - just get less money. But hey...

I have proposed to organise a workshop for everything that has to do with "freeriding" in the widest sense.

My ideas until now are:

a) watching videos (of course)

b) writing petitions and contacting the local media to get a legal place for riding/building/djing/etc - cause this will keep kids from building illegal stuff/doing drugs and stuff

c) inviting bike instuctors

d) basic maintenance stuff

e) training for jams/races/whatnot

f) organising weekend trips to bike parks/visiting the HQ of the Mountainbike Rider Mag (excl. devoted to Dhilling, djing, freeriding and jibbing)

g) basic riding techniques (for those not really able but willing - helmets, leg armour and gloves compulsory)

That's it for now - any more ideas???

Would be grand if some of you had some more ideas or some dofferent perspective. I know that Dangerous Dan did something like that at the end of the nineties.

Sounds awesome.

That said, there are some things to consider:

Who is the workshop (its more of a club than a class?) going to appeal to? Mostly younger groms, mostly experienced freeriders? What sort of liabilities does the German school system have? If anything happens to a student are you going to be personally liable?

I know in Canada it would be a reallly hard sell to most elementary school administrators. Even most highschool admin, always covering their asses. I think when you're presenting and executing your idea, focus heavily on safety and the social benefits you spoke of (less criminal behaviour, drug use).

Good luck.

i smell a yank :P plus the dude is in Germany so his English is pretty friggen good eh.

You wanna see my posts on german forums

I think its a good idea but the only way a school would back it is if you include the masses, ie BMX, other less exciting forms of Mtb like XC so the kids actually have a choice and with an XC club you might just bet the support from School but in the back ground you're planning more of a Freeride/Bmx thing.

hope it works out for you Mic.

We don't. I was being an ass. funny doesn't translate into german apparently.

and using an "S" is old english. most canadian dictionaries use "Z".

to Organise has something to do with organs and chemistry I believe.

don't quote me on that.

You bloody......, jason ;)

Well, kids are really interested in it. I have to allow a bigger number of people to enter the project.
Loads of "freeride"/dj folks at my school. Mostly btw 14 - 17 yrs of age.

Parents? Well, I think if I sll the package in a reasonable way, they won't interfere. they can watch, comee along etc.
I regard it as a way of presnting "our" way of riding in a positive light.
In case they should be against it, the school is very excited as well and project work is one of their main ways of showing young people a responsible way of acting/behaving etc.

And...i have already some experience in organiZing and teaching graffiti-writing and b-boying. and the public opinions objections are much higher. and it was a success since i kept kids off the streets.

Sounds good, but lesson #1 should be trailbuilding and trail maintenance. May as well start the little buggers off on the right foot.

Spelling organise properly works in our favour. Otherwise, we might be confused with our neighbours to the south, no matter what colour we are.

I couldn't fit aluminium into the sentence, and I simply refuse to spell tire with a 'y'.

Maybe just concentrate on teaching English and forget about the biking.....
